Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The Type 64 is a dedicated suppressed pistol first introduced in 1965 and used in the Vietnam War. It uses a rimless version of the .32 ACP cartridge (7.65x17mm) in a 9-round Makarov like magazine. Despite outward similarity to the Makarov (especially the grip), the design is wholly unique internally. It uses basically a miniaturized AK bolt to allow the shooter to select between blowback semiauto functioning and single shot manual operation. The bolts rotating locking lugs prevent it from cycling when locked, in a very clever alternative use of the rotating bolt system. The suppressor has two chambers, using a combination of baffles and wire mesh as suppressor elements. In addition to standard ammunition, a plastic-sabot frangible load was also developed for use in situations like airline hijackings, and this loading is why some sources reference a maximum effective range of 15 meters.
For all its technical cleverness, the Type 64 is a rather heavy pistol, at 1.8kg / 4 pounds. It was replaced in 1967 by the substantially lighter and simpler Type 67, which weighed only 1.05kg / 2.3 pounds. This particular Type 64 was originally owned by Mitch Werbell III, giving it an even more interesting history…

More so with a specific round. It's much better to know when you are ejecting so you can eject it to your pocket or something. And in case you fumble your first shot, you can while you eject the round, press the button and use semi-automatic fire.

@1lovesoni
@1lovesoni Год назад
@@TesserId that exact thing exist, they're called brass catchers. They're often a bit large and annoying but they do work pretty well. My favorite example though is the AR57, which is a conversion upper receiver for the AR15/M16 pattern rifle, it uses the P90's 50 round horizontal magazine and ejects the spent shells down through the AR15's normal magwell. However you can put a hollowed out AR mag in there to catch all the spent shells. Making it a great theoretical special-forces/spy weapon, because it shoots an armor peircing bullet, can be silenced, leaves no brass cases, and holds 50 rounds. If I was writing a James Bond type story, that's what I'd equip my protagonist with.

That rotating bolt lock feature is far better than a simple slide lock. It does the job but if you need a fast second shot, simply rack the action. With a simple slide lock, if you need a fast second shot, you need to manually unlock the slide, rack it AND if you want to maintain maximum suppression Relock the slide and then fire. That action lock is fantastic. The muffled thud of a properly suppressed 32 might not nessecarily alert a person, even if they hear it, it might not be identifiable as a dangerous sound. The mechanical click of the action will stand out in most environments though, as might, I imagine, the clatter of a spent cartrige ejecting and bouncing around. That is normally not a sound that's very audible over the sound of a gunshot, but inside a concrete building it might well be more distinguishable than the muted cough of the shot. The later developed type 67 silenced pistol is basically a simplified version of type 64, the lower chamber beneath the barrel has been removed for weight reduction. Before type 64 was issued to the Chinese military in a "large scale", it was mainly introduced to NVA and Viet Cong during the Vietnam War for guerilla warfare and special operation. PLA assessed and realized its value, and start equipped type 64/67 into PLA special forces (back in the day these units were referred as "reconnaissance units" not "special forces"). During the war between China and Vietnam in 1979, special operation units from both sites used type 64/67 silenced pistols during many operations, and it is so effective that type 64/67 served in PLA for nearly 40 years, and recently replaced by QSW-06 suppressed pistol.

As a mechanic, the metallic mesh baffle reminds me of small bits in my air impact that are called "silencers" which look identical. Their performance is really incredible. Well, it's certainly the coolest gun I've seen today so far, but it's only 6:00 AM. I understand the reason for the fancy locking mechanism. It's to enable you to quickly cycle the action manually in single shot mode without having to fumble with a separate locking lever. This will make follow up shots faster, which can be important with such a weak cartridge. It may not be vital, but you got to admire the effort that went into designing this.

I don’t know about “coolest”, but it’s definitely up there. It probably one of the rarest things that I’ve seen in private hands in the USA. I can’t imagine that many of them made it over here, if more than one did. Low production, special purpose military gun, from Communist China..... It may have been a Vietnam War bring back. I’m guessing that the guy mentioned in the video had some very important international connections. I don’t see this in the hands of the NVA. I don’t see the Chinese government selling one on the commercial market. My guess is that China sent one or more to another comblock country for them to evaluate, and it got lost/stolen/sold. This thing might have been stolen by the CIA and brought back. I’m almost more interested in the story of how it made it here, than I am with the gun. If they had that history, it might even go double the money at auction.

Mitchell WerBell had the gun since at least 1981. The story he told (which may or may not be true) is that he got it in the aftermath of a failed assassination attempt on him when he was selling weapons in South Vietnam in the mid 1960s. The only other admitted place where one of these guns has shown up as South Korea in the early 1970s. The South Koreans found a North Korean spy with one. The pistol was designed for insurgents to use on assassination missions. The Chinese gave some to the NVA which gave them to the elite Viet Cong special operations units. The Chinese Type 67 silenced (which replaced the type 64) pistol was much more common in South Vietnam.

I’m Chinese and a gun enthusiast, yet I have never heard of this pistol. This thing is rare. I did however read about the airline security bullet once and I think it was mostly intended to be used in a specifically designed airline security pistol, however those were never widely issued. The background of that is during the 80s China was quite chaotic due to the reform and there were several instances of criminals hijacking airliners, and that created the need of a cabin safe pistol for the crew and security. However the hijacking became less common a few years later and now Chinese airline security basically only carries things like handcuffs.
