YESSSS back in the like 2001 when I was little my dad got a Losi xxx-nt and that was my introduction to the hobby, and that was before brushless/lipo was really a thing so the nitro stuff was generally the king. love the smell of nitro, love stadium trucks. RIP old school Team Losi, RIP nitro 1/10th scale.
Truggies, brushless power and SCTs killed it. That being said the class was never really as big as it seemed and its original purpose is now redundant. It was really only intended as a feeder class for 1/8th scale nitro buggy, something that 1/8th scale electric buggy does while also being its own major class. Even in their heyday, a lot of clubs only saw a handful of nitro trucks vs at least twice as many 1/8th scale buggies. It's a shame, really. I've spent several hundred to turn an old JATO 2.5 into a track monster and I have nowhere to run it.
I recently exhumed my RC10 GT that's been mothballed for almost 20 years. After running electric for so long the smell of nitro and the crackle of the OS 12 CV really brought back some memories.
It’s been this way since the trucks were introduced almost 30 years ago with the original RC10T, which was pretty much an RC10 buggy with wider suspension arms, custom shock towers, and longer shocks. The wider stance, combined with relative low CG, makes them much easier to drive. If you have a good neutral setup, most of the time, you may just have to change tires based on what the track likes, but you can usually figure that out from what the locals use. The only time I recall ever having to change shock settings was to adjust based on how smooth or rough the track was overall. Wow, it’s crazy to hear some company names after all these years: MÍP, Lunsford... good to see that these companies are still around, particularly Associated. I wasn’t sure how things would pan out after they merged with Thunder Tiger many years ago. I haven’t raced since about ‘98 and only did very little off-road (I mostly raced on-road), but I still remember those days like it was yesterday.
That vintage looking body is sweet. I've been racing non competitive and club racing for 10+ years. For me the competitors racing truck are having more fun. Some of the same drivers in buggy are uptight and not having fun in buggy, but once they get on track with the truck they are having a blast. I personally love 2 wheel buggy on dirt but can't really stand it on carpet. But truck is so much more fun on both dirt and carpet. Your statements about the tuning window being larger for the truck are correct, so it then comes down to the driver adapting to the truck to make up for the sub optimal settings.
Hello Harris, just want to give you and all RC Drivers out ther a little Tip, before you connect or disconnect a Battarie to the Drive Controller, deplug the Plus Wire/Plug at first, or plug it at last. The must of this tinier elektronics dont really like to get the Plus before having the Minus, its just a bit saver to dont damage the Controller, or some parts. Thank You for the Videos, keep doing well, peace and out!
Just got a stadium truck for the indoor season this year and you are right when you say they're a ton of fun! Placed 1st in the Cmain to get a bump up the the Bmain in my debut!
I love the classic OG shells from the Team Associated 2t up to the t4. It'd be nice to have that style of body for a t5 - t6 or the newer losi 22t without modding/cutting the body. Something about that more square body for stadium trucks is so much cooler.
I've been out of the hobby for about 15 years. I used to race a XXX-T and was hoping to get back into a stadium truck. Thanks for the video, this explains why it's been so hard to find them used.
I think you are spot on and a great ambassador to the sport. I (44) started at 8yrs old with a hornet and a 4 channel futaba due to wanting a glider or plane. I stuck with cars and started racing with the original RC10, RC10L, RC12L. I got out when the RC10T2 was hot. Now my son is about to turn 13 and we have dabbled at home with some RTRs from Dramida to top line Arrma 1/8th stuff. I am in research mode deciding what to get each of us...gotta hit the semi local tracks in surrounding Louisville Ky area before buying. Thanks I hit subscribe when I seen that Kinser shirt last vid!
I think you're probably correct. I just got back into the hobby after a fairly long hiatus. I always drove stadium trucks in the past. I'm running short course 4×4 now. These SCT's really blew up in popularity while I was away. I can't believe how popular 4×4 is. When I first got into the hobby 25 years ago, 4×4 wasn't really anything more than a novelty. Nice video! I forgot to mention that I always went nitro in the past. Now electric is king and I never thought it would be so good!
Stadium Trucks are awesome! I used to love racing my B3 and T3 factory team kits back in the early 2000's. For me though ever since I was a kid I always had a thing for Buggys though. I just like the looks of older buggys. (hate the new cab forward look). But I also love the challenge that buggys present. Stadium trucks are too easy to drive though. They just have too much grip and are in my experience easier to dial in. SC trucks are kinda like buggys to in that they dont have the same grip a stadium truck has and there for are a bit more challenging to drive fast.
I am a beginner, but have the Beetle class (2WD Buggy with 17,5t in conjunction with Blinky Mod ESC) selected to start. Why? Because I just love the Kafer body. But even my club president says exactly the same as you and therefore advises only beginners to Truggys or just to this beetle class. Maybe I'll get a Truggy ... Greetings from Germany! 👍✌️
Ive always loved the stadium trucks. I never raced just love the look and handling of them. I currently have a XXXT and a T2 which I love to drive around for fun. Great video as always! Cheers from Canada.
Absolutely agree!!! I truly enjoy my SC5M as a Stadium Truck. Great group on Facebook as well. Just a blast to drive without having to tune every second
Like you said, ST is not a super popular class around my area. I've never tried it (being I've run 2wd sc, 2wd and 4wd buggy) but after seeing this video I might give it a try! Great vid man, keep it up.
I love my old t4.1, I still run mine as that’s all I have as a racer at the moment. I have had 2wd buggies but it wasn’t as fun. I just got my boy a NOS t4.2, he is stoked and we love running them together. Tires are huge with them, get what’s fits the track. Echo everything else.
I like to think of myself as one of the people that has kept stadium truck going at my local track for the the last 5 years. 13.5 spec truck is the quickest way to have an awesome time racing without going nuts on the budget, imo. Between Stadium truck and the 2 wheel short course, I don't think I've even raced my buggy in the last 6 months and I don't miss it at all.
Speaking of the rustler .... A fun project would be to take a rustler and try to make it as competitive as you possibly can... Then go race it and see how it turns out. Lol i'd definitely tune in for that! Sounds like a hella fun project.
Great video first of all, I love stadium trucks my first kit that I started out with is my Kyosho Outlaw Ultima that I've had for now 29 years. That's when the stadium truck class was just growing and its a shame that the 2wd stadium truck class is hardly seen these days in my area, however now we are seeing the 4wd class take off. I'm happy to see trucks making a comeback just as I'm just getting back to the scene so I will be watching to see which manufacturers will be releasing 4wd trucks/ truggies later in the year. I'm aware that Xray has begun shipping theirs and PR Racing has a truggy available as well so the competition should be very fun to watch and definitely help the hobby grow more.
Hi Ryan, you’re setup is meticulous and the attention to detail is amazing 🤩 you know the intricacies of setting up your rc and understanding what makes it better and what doesn’t. I love watching how consistent you are on the track, niiiiiiiiice. Awesome videos man. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧 Ps...... i used to race the Associated RC10 way back in the day and loved racing it, i was never an A main winner, in the all Ireland rc racing, i could win the B final and get bumped up to the A main back row, but I never finished last.
Good point (and video). Off topic: So "Stadium Trucks" are always (traditionally) 2WD? What do one call a similar 4WD Stadium Truck? (I know some call them truggies nowadays, but ...). Can it still be named a Stadium Truck if it is 4WD? Wondered about that for a long time.
Short course two-wheel drive and two wheel drive stadium trucks are the funnest thing to drive I wish they would make a big comeback I'm seeing nationally the turnouts have been horrible for both these classes our local tracks used to get 25 30 shortcourse trucks every Sunday we're lucky now if we get six
I recently decided to get back in the hobby. Went to Tacoma RC and asked their advice on what to get. Their response. If you’re going’s to race, 2wd Buggy is most popular, followed by 2wd mod buggy, 4wd buggy and 4wd mod buggy. In other words if you want to race you should get something that’s popular in your area. Which is why I got a 2wd stock buggy. Good looking car though👍 and always love your content.
The old school 2wd stadium trucks are a pain to drive. They really teach you how to control your throttle. My first RC was a xxx-nt rtr. I just bash, but in the dirt, it was still a handful. A 1/8th buggy is like driving a high flying tank! Just turn the wheel and gun it! Never drove a 2wd buggy. Guessing they would be a bit more annoying than the 2wd st since the tires are narrower.
I feel the same way. I spent quite a bit on buying my son and I some buggies cause everyone was running them tried them and didnt like them. We turned them into street stock oval racers. But now oval racing is all there is in my area. All others got shut down. Wish I could afford to open my own track! But still stadium truck is my favorite and I like short course also.
if you race on my home track you will always be tuning and chasing traction no matter what you drive. its really low bite sandy and dusty, you know its "off-road" like it use to be in the 80s and 90s😀. i agree, high bite would be more fun but less challenging. i love the guitar playing at the first of the video who is that?
Ryan your videos are great man. I aim to get my kids and myself into RC and I actually aspire to race at the local club. I did a few years back get a brushed 4x4 Stampede which gave us a taste. But then life got busy. But now I am dying to get my start in club racing. I figured due to lack of $ AND skill I’ll start out with 2wd SCT. Build skills learning how to control 2wd and save pennies for a 4x4 better end brushless SCT like TLR or TA. I really want to learn and race with my son. THEN I find your channel now I aspire to buggy some day but truck for now. Seems you prefer ST over SCT? If you see this and have time could you touch on why? Thanks for putting out such awesome content man. You’ll build this hobby and fill it with addicts the way you’re going now! God bless!!! Jimmy
I remember i built a kyosho stadium truck like 11 years ago. Was the only one at the track with one everone was running buggy and sc truck. Sucked I love stadium trucks don't like buggy haven't had intrest in Rc cars for a while . Don't have the money and time . Great vids man
Always felt the same way brotha. Trucks are a little less predictable an keep you on your toes, plus they look better IMO. Drop some more nitro videos you need a 1/8 nitro truggy! Your channel is dope keep it up 🤙
Truck class is for those who want to have fun racing, buggy is for those who want faster lap times... Who remembers Luther Peters track Grand Prix Hobbies in Ft Pierce? I used to live at that track!!!
I was never that into buggies, although I had a gold tub RC10 as one of my first cars. Trucks were the new thing in racing when I got into RC. I liked the bigger wheels, they handled the grass and obstacles around my house better. There were also more kids driving trucks at the track, the older guys stuck to their buggies. My first racing truck was a Traxxas Blue Eagle LS. The battles I had at the track with RC10T's and JrXT's were epic. The early 90's was a great time for RC. A lot of guys around here moved to running buggies and SCT's at events and dropped trucks because all the hype was on the SCT's when they came out. I like the paint job on the Rustler body, looks old school.
All the success that buggies have had over the years has made every other class posible. For me growing up in the late 80's early 90's, buggies are what rc was. If we are talking racing, anything winning at the track has "buggy" aspects to the platform. Trucks are more fun for for sure, because they are more forgiving, but nothing will turn heads and drop jaws like a dialed in buggy. Your right, trucks are funner , but buggies are better, cooler, faster😀
stadium truck just started becoming popular again here in New York so I got the t6.2 I started with a b64 sold it and got a b6.2 and love the buggy and just decided to get a stadium again because it's becoming just as popular as buggy at my local hobby shop
Dude I got the b6.1 with a team associated 90s red white and blue paint job from the 1/28 scale associated truck just started to build now you love stadium trucks lol man rc bug bites hard nice old school paint job lhs has t6.1 stadium truck but I'm leaning towards a e boat for the lake. Ryan your channel rocks more videos please😊😊😊😊😊😊 I'm thinking about doing a second body for my b6.1 kinwald tribute rest in peace Brian😇😇😇😇😇😇 got a lot of paint styles loaded down from Pinterest
Yah back in the day it was just called "truck" lol. Now you say truck and they think you mean short course. My dream RC is still an RC10GT. They were just so cool when I was younger and driving a heavily modified stampede in the truck class... had to change the tires, the body, etc and basically make it into a rustler to be allowed in the class, and to be competitive oh lord...so many parts, but it was still fun.
I think they are in this weird uncanny valley transition between scale trucks and buggies, but is not actually a truck or a buggy. Trucks are cool, buggies are cool, but this is like... I don't know, it is just off for some reason. However if it is small (1:24 or less) then this type of truck-buggy (truggy?) is cool because it looks cute. Bigger scale they look like a human baby scaled up to an adult height. Anyway, they are fun to drive still, people have preferences and some will think this looks cool.
I just want a ST for backyard track nostalgia! Good fun! (LISTEN UP @:TLR,TEAM AE, SERPENT, KYOSHO, ARRMA, TRAXXAS...) We're asking for the products! Make em! There's nothing really now or updated in the ST world. Would be nice to see someone breathe some life back into the genre!
What if your local track doesn't run ST?? LOL I'm headed down to local track and see what they are running and classes they have, I'm getting back into racing after 15 years thanks
The 10th scale series i most like are short course trucks but you didn't realy find any competition driving short course or maybe that stadium trucks. It's all about the buggys :)
I'm not gonna try to change you'r mind. I clicked the video because I agree. Unrelated I also prefer racing 2wd buggies over 4wd buggies, even on low grip tracks
Love your vids, just one point if you ever see this comment. Your intro is too loud compared to the rest of the video, especially with headphones on. Have to adjust the volume for the intro. Otherwise loving it :)
Get a few good truck drivers together and its a lot more skill, IMO. More mass to fling around, harder to 'fly' them. When things go wrong, they keep going wrong for length of time unlike buggy which you can correct quicker but the pace is faster. Trucks are harder to gain time with, harder to negotiate in lap traffic due to size and how much they slide in the corner vs buggy, handling is more numb so you have to plan more vs attack. That's been my exp for 20 years. :)
My local tracks bringing back sct which peaks my interest but so far there's always 3 groups for stadium truck so I might hope to that. Stock buggy I'm getting sick of and I'm loving mod buggy more
In my opinion beginners cant race fast because the steering is really quick. You want that yes but if you have no clue what your doing you can turn to much and lose control really fast. That's why I'm practicing racing with my rustler vxl but I usually have alot more fun just bashing with it or my e revo
I 'm resurrecting my old Losi JRX2, so that shows how "out of touch" I am with modern RC stuff. The tires really confuse me. For dirt, those tires just seem way too smooth to do anything! I have knobby tires for the back and slotted tires for the front. The "knobs" are 3-4 mm tall. Why would anyone want such smooth tires for dirt?
Because you are looking at the wrong type of dirt tires the small knobs are for prepared dirt tracks which are more like clay with a bit of loess dirt on the top but proline still sells tires with 2-3 cm knobs.
Based on the tracks you have posted at...im pretty close to you. Where do you run stadium trucks on a regular basis? Im having trouble finding a track that runs them.
