Thanks for this video. Exactly what I needed to know. I followed every step and was able to take a used mower I bought, which was this exact model, and perform the annual maintenance on it (with the help of my son). Bought this used mower from a neighbor at a great price so that I can give it to a needy family who has been using a weed trimmer to cut their entire lawn. Now I know that what I am giving them is in great shape and should hold up for them. Thanks again!!

I used an oil siphon and never considered tipping it over since you have to drain out all the gas. I use synthetic oil since it a better lube and want the mower to last. I also use an E3 Spark Plug which doesn't require gapping and lasts for many years. The muffler is the spark arrestor. You were smart to use the anti-seize, most people skip that step. What I have also learned is to lubricate the cables since having to had to replace both of them after they froze up over the years. I also learned to use some belt dressing on the drive belt. Thanks for your video.

@becausestuffbreaks 6 лет назад
What do you mean by lubing the cables and what are you considering to be a drive belt on this?
@averat84

So here’s the problem with not having a drain plug for oil: Solids in the oil collect at the bottom of the case due to gravity, and fluid transfer pumps are ineffective at removing those solids (e.g., fine metal particulate, dirt). It’s more of an inconvenience, rather than a flaw in design, as you can just physically tilt or invert the unit to evacuate its old, dirty lube from its fill hole.

Good point about draining oil on later Briggs&Stratton. About 3 years ago wasted better part of day searching for drain plug on Briggs&Stratton bought new just the previous Spring. Finally Googled the issue and discovered B&S decided that drain plug(on bottom of engine)was superfluous--on some models. Kinda' aggravating but your tips are very helpful in any case!

I have approx 300 hours of run time on this mower (7 years worth), and it still runs like a champ. The weed whacker (TB) was junk : lasted three weeks, and now I have had a straight shaft stihl, but the mower is great. Have given two tune ups so far, about to do a third. I use premium 93 Octane (10% ethanol) only - and the TB110 has done me just fine. I wish we had non ethanol fuel in PA.

I can't believe that all "Newer" mowers don't have an oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine. I have a 1999 Craftsman and a 2001 Craftsman push mower and they have the drain plugs as well as some of my buddies mowers have the drain plugs. I hate turning anything upside down that has a float; especially in the newer B&S plastic carbs. Great video

Well done! I'll bet this engine & mower will last for many more years, with this maintenance. Where I live, spring and autumn can be chilly, so I like 5W30 full syn oil. My Snapper with Briggs & Stratton older flathead style is a 2007 model, so it should have plenty more years to go. My son-in-law has an MTD like yours, same OHV engine, purchased in 2015, and I think the engine is quieter than my Snapper. Overall, I like that style of MTD mower like yours - not crazy expensive to purchase new, and with maintenance, it can give long service.

Nice video. Just a note though. You should always leave both wheels on the ground when you drain the oil out by tipping it on it's side. If you lift the back wheels off the floor the oil will run toward the front of the crank case and you will wind up leaving some of the old oil in the crank case.

@becausestuffbreaks
@becausestuffbreaks 6 лет назад
Does it smell like gas or feel oily? If it's oil you will probably need to replace the air filter and take out your spark plug and wipe it off. It will probably run rough and be smoky until the oil gets out of the system. If it's gas, you may have to let it set for a couple hours with the air filter off and spark plug out to let all the extra gas evaporate. You can also just try starting it and see what happens. The liquid isn't anything bad.

Well, I've goofed up. Single on a budget Mom here desperately trying to get the TB110 I bought last year to run. The mower will start if I manually prime it - I used a straw - but, then it shuts off. So, I took everything completely apart again and cleaned it all again ncluding the carburetor. Drained the gas and it now has new gas and new oil. The only problem is that there are these two thin metal rods that attach to the pull start system and the carburetor and for the life of me I can't figure out how they go back on! I should have taken a photo. I'm not sure which one goes where and how. I can't find any diagrams online. Help?

Mary I'm fixing to take my carb off mine to clean it tonight. I can send you a pic if you give me your email. That's the only way I know how to do it.

there should be a plug on the bottom to drain the oil
@becausestuffbreaks
@becausestuffbreaks 7 лет назад
+John Stpierre that was what I expected but they didn't put one there. I'll quote the manual, "The oil must be drained from the top oil fill tube (E, Figure 10)." Here's another one, "When you drain the oil from the top oil fill tube, the fuel tank must be empty or fuel can leak out and result in a fire or explosion."

Dear god, i thought i was crazy. I'm sitting in my driveway changing all the bolts on the bottom and yea none of them were oil. also read the manual and thought "this can't be right" good god its a crappy way to do it, so the engine has to be warm but warns you about gas dripping -_- all seems like one big mess. None the less thanks for the video it clears things up!

The oil must be drained from the bottom of the lawn mower. What you are showing is not correct.
@becausestuffbreaks
@becausestuffbreaks 2 года назад
This is correct. I even show the owners manual in the video telling to do it this way. There is no drain plug. Prove me wrong.

Which is the proper oil for this model?
@FOXRANGERTAILS
@FOXRANGERTAILS 5 лет назад
SAE 30 any 30 weight winter rating usually does not apply for lawn mowers , so ignore 5w 10w , the next number 30 is what you need , i use left over oil from car oil changes

You know if the manufacture wasn't cutting corners on a drain plug , it would be less trouble changing oil with a drain plug on the bottom . Tight wads ......
