Great video!. Everyone should go get struts/shocks from rock auto...then get OEM mounts from one of the lexus parts sites. any aftermarket mounts if there are even any out there are trash. Always get the OEM mounts.
Holy crap batman! That thing is super high initially and stupid looking. It definitely settled a lot better after thst ride out and I guess time will bring it back down to where it belongs even more. Great job!
Frickin great video man! I'm wrapping up a strut, strut mounts and sway bar link project on my son's college mobile - my wife's old 2008 Highlander. It's amazing how many more steps those take compare to this simple shock in the GS. My 2015 GS got new front shocks under my extended warranty just last month, but not the rears. Now I'm thinking I should do the rears myself just to keep all 4 the same age. However, mine is an F-Sport and MAN those electronically adjustable shocks aren't cheap! $300 each!! Well, thanks again for the video and the confidence it gives me.
I am happy I can be of help. Always take your time, don't rush, and watch videos several times as you do the work. There is a lot of nuance even with simple installs. Sometimes a simple broken bolt sets you back for days. All in all, the GS is not hard to work on. Just have a good jack and tools.
@@landedinlukla Living 3+ decades in Mass (and 2+ formerly in Maine) I've dealt with more than my fair share of rusted and snapped bolts in my 4 decades of wrenching. I've gotten metal shavings in my eyes drilling broken bolts and have plenty battle scars on my hands, as I'm sure you do too! Agree with you about the nuance - I have been using ALLDATA diy for almost 2 decades now and find it immensely useful for the "hints" they offer in pulling things apart & reassembling. That along with the torque settings for each nut or bolt - I'm a stickler for torque numbers. The majority of the cars in my family have been Mazdas and the one Toyota, all with strut suspensions. But my wife's ole 1995 Accord Wagon and my 2004 Mazda 6 hatchback (V6 5-speed!) were coil on shock wishbone and multilink, so I did get an education on that at one time in my life.
@@landedinlukla I have a tip for everyone who lives in a snow zone - or right on the ocean - and deals with a lot of salt-based rust issues: I use a heavy-duty jack for lifting the chassis - a cheap one from Harbor Freight - and put a 2X wood block on the jack pad to lift on the sub-frame mounting bolt instead of jacking the pinch weld on the rocker panel. Those rocker panels start turning to mush usually when the car is old enough that you need to start lifting it a lot to work on things like suspension, brakes, etc. I ALWAYS use 2 jack stands (minimum) under the car below structural or unibody frame members and/or suspension subframe mounts as a safety. Then I use my older Craftsman jack to lift and lower the bottom of the knuckle or the disk brake. I've never seen anyone lift and lower the whole car while keeping the knuckle steady.
buy KYB gas-a-just I have the Fsport with AVS and dynamic handling, each shock was about 100 a piece dont buy lexus brand. KYB is OEM and performs same or better
Sorry, don't have. Rockauto is good for shocks/struts/rotors/brake pads/end links. Shock boots and rubber stoppers are to be purchased from Lexus. That is what I did. There are diagrams with all parts and their numbers on any lexus parts website
Great video, I am about to change the rear shocks, I think they are bad because when I get 2 or 3 passengers on the back the car sits so low it scares me. My gs350 is currently at 40k miles and I already did front shocks but didn't touch the end links, do you think I should replace them ? All front and rear ? Thanks in advance!
You should leave your factory oem struts/shocks on your vehicle unless your absolutely sure they need replacing! Other than some type of unique circumstance, there’s no way possible your shocks can be bad @ 40k miles if there the original oem shocks the car came with!
The issue you speak about with car sitting low with passengers in back is usually a fwd car issue,,usually the cheaper made fwd vehicles do this…unless your rear passengers all weigh well over 300+ pounds I can’t see it !..the Gs & most Lexus models are solid! These issues your having are not those of a Lexus!
@@kcass3281 I bought my gs350 used with 20k miles, it was kinda new. And yeah my kids are big and heavy hehe, they are around 200pounds each. When I bring them with me I see the rear of the car sitting almost on too of rear wheels. I thought maybe my rear springs are bad but not 100% sure on this and tbh at this time I don't wanna spend money checking if it fix the issue. Economy isn't great at home atm. Currently my Lexus has 40k miles. I changed front struts about 10k miles ago due to front right side leaking oil.
Question: My 2016 GS200t has 40,000 miles and handles well. However, I hear noise from rear suspension when turning at unlevel surface. What suspension component do you think needs replacement? Thanks
My mechanic didn’t wanna replace it for me cause he said the fsport suspension is electronic . The front strut is connected to the computer. Is there any programming done after the work?
I just ordered the kyb (with adaptive variable suspension) shocks for my 16 gs350 fsport in the rear. It has a twist off module and im going to attempt to do it on my own. When I discovered my blown shock the module was knocked off. The car never threw codes and i suppose its plug and play. i put it right back on with no issues other than it feeling like the shocks worn out
Have never heard of such a thing. The car will sit based on the height of the springs. The shock does not determine ride height, unless it is dead. This is the reason that certain springs (height) are paired with certain shocks
Which shocks did you buy? We have a 2013 GS awd, it has sport mode but don’t think it has variable suspension. Dealer wants $3,000 to replace all four. No thanks. Car has 245k miles and original shocks. I keep looking at the KYB but not sure if they will be as good as oem.
I took off my OEM and saw they were KYB. So, don't worry about KYB being worse. Definitely not worse. Great aftermarket company. If you have FSport, you might have the variable suspension. If not F Sport, just buy KYB. Front AWD struts cost me about 170 for both (Gas A Just model, ordered from RockAuto). Rear shocks cost me about 160 together.
And while you re at it...change front and rear stabilizer bar endlinks. Each of the 4 costs like $35 (Moog brand) and is def a part you should change given your mileage. When these go, they clink terribly loud.
Awesome, thanks for your reply. I have been doing a ton of research, forums and RU-vid. Not much info on 2013+. Just one video I could find on YT, and he said only get from dealer. Even my own mechanic told me $1200 for rear. I don’t have F sport, but I think it’s the luxury model. Has a lot of buttons to adjust the seat and screens on the rear windows.
@@jennypreston9755 very possible yours is adjustable. Thus the shocks will be more expensive. As for end links, shock/strut/mounts- all that is cheap and should be changed. The labor itself...any good mechanic can do this job in a few hours.
@@landedinlukla just took the time to watch your video, great explanation. I think my car does have the variable suspension bc it has a box on top of strut inside the trunk. 😑 We have the exact same car, color and wheels. Love our GS, as well as all the other Lexus cars in the family. They never die.
Yes. Dead shocks and struts means the car is riding on springs alone, and when it hits bumps, the wheel literally bounces like a basketball. Shocks/struts is what control the compression and rebound of a wheel.
