IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you buy your replacement alternator - check to see if your original alternator has a 6-groove or an 8-groove pulley (see 12:15 in the video). Replace the Alternator on a Ford Triton 5.4 or 4.6 V8 engine. No matter what vehicle these engines are in, all installations are nearly the same. Learn to change the alternator on a 5.4L or 4.6L Ford engine. In this video, I change the alternator on a 2003 Ford F150 5.4L V8. The procedure is almost exactly the same for any 5.4L or 4.6L Ford V8.

Ditto what Von said. We did it ourselves (Okay, my husband did it, I supervised) on our '02 Expedition. We went through several videos and yours was, by far, the easiest to understand.Thank you, Dennis!

I see your video has been out a couple of years but I would like to add a couple of comments. I see that someone has already commented that you should always disconnect the negative terminal first and you won’t get a spark or short out anything. Also it is a good idea to invest in a computer memory saver. I have one that plugs into the ALDL data plug (for the OBD-2 diagnostics). It came with a long wire that accepts alligator clamps or cigarette lighter plug to connect to an adjacent car, both included. I’ve used it doing alternators, starters, replacing vehicle batteries and didn’t have to worry about the engine running smoothly or the tranny not shifting properly after I had the job done. I keep an old small 12 volt back-up battery from my homes phone system that I put on the floor of the vehicle and clamp right onto it. Keep up the good work, your videos are very useful.

Thanks Dennis, replaced the alternator in my 2001 F150 5.4L all OK, your video is a great help. Your admonition to double check the belt seating before starting up was critical - I closely double checked and discovered the belt was not seated properly on one of the lower pulleys! Used a new DB Electric 130A ($77!) we'll see how it does. Thanks again.

Best video ever. Should you replace the attached voltage regulator since that could be the problem rather then the whole alternator?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 года назад
Thank you for watching, Gene! That could have possibly fixed me up, but I knew the alternator I replaced was a rebuilt one. Since the remanufacturers don't normally replace the voltage regulators, I opted to replace the whole thing with a new one. :)

Nice video but I wish you had mentioned the part about making sure it is a 6 groove pulley instead of an 8 groove at the beginning of the video. Of course they sold me the wrong thing and now its already installed.

I would think if the parts store determined the correct belt ( width ) for the application , they could tell the pulley ( 6 0r 8 ) groove ? Thanks , :-) Wyr God bless
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 7 лет назад
Good point and you would think so, but normally they will ask you if you need a 6 or 8 groove belt. I think the issue is that belts are typically inventoried by belt length........both widths are the same length, so unless you are holding the alternator in your hand (so they can see the pulley), they don't have a good way to tell which width belt you need. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it.

Good video! Is it the same for a 2004 Ford Expedition 5.4 L? Thanks
@dwcoffey

Thank you! Yes, it should be identical. All of the modular 5.4L engines are very similar, with just a few minor variations in alternator mounting brackets. An Expedition, should be exactly the same as my F150.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 5 лет назад
Hey Johari, thanks for watching! If you have a 5.4L or a 4.6L modular, it will be the same or very nearly the same. All the 5.4 and 4.6 modular engines are nearly identical. If you have a different engine, the alternator mounting and belt routing etc will probably be different. The wiring will be nearly the same though.

What socket sizes? I have to do one on the hwy
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 7 лет назад
As I mention in the video, my truck takes 10mm to remove the intake cowling, the alternator mount bolts and the hot lead lug. My truck is a 2003 F150. If yours is a different vehicle, it might be slightly different. I would take my socket set and a set of wrenches if I had to do one on the side of the road.

If you have the 5.4 iron block 4 valve that comes in the Lincoln Navigator the manifold is different and an obstacle. Hope you don't mine me pasting a link to a video example of that one specifically: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RkNtwd-wdTI.html
