I went out to Spurn Point to test a theory. Turning off the IBIS in my Olympus EM1 Mark ii micro four thirds camera seemed to produce every so slightly sharper images. Thanks Hew!

Although I haven't tested it myself with olympus cameras, Ian Worth recently did with the fuji system and couldn't see a difference with IS on/off. I'd have to do it myself some day, but I really don't see how IS might effect sharpness when using a tripod. IS compensates unintentional camera movement. If you move a lot, the camera compensates a lot. If you move little, the camera compensates little. Why would it over-compensate when it's not moving at all? It doesn't make sense. Plus even on a tripod there are still going to be micro movements unless it's 100% wind still and no one is walking near the tripod.

This has always been a debatable point, so do whatever suits you and your camera ( they may vary). Don’t forget in the past there was no such thing as Image stabilisation.

I agree. If the camera is completely stationary, on a tripod, the IS will not be active.

Once again you really consider the composition - and it pays off! Super shots!

On some Olympus cameras, shutter shock at certain shutter speeds was an issue. The work around is to use the "Anti-shock 0 setting" on the shutter mode, which is mechanical shutter with electronic first curtain, some Olympus cameras required a firmware update for the issue.

IBIS is not looking for internal vibrations, it is looking for the camera itself moving . If it not moving then I reckon the main effect of having it on is using up battery life.

Actually Robin Wong did test this out a while ago wether IBIS on tripod has any effect. And it made absolutely no difference. With the exact same settings pictures looked absolutely the same. Which makes totally sense imo. In order for the IBIS to counter movement it needs movement in the first place. No movement, no trigger signal, no counter-movement. Having the camera on a tripod in windy conditions doing long exposures the IBIS might actually be beneficial countering camera shake by the wind.

Great video as usual, specially how you frame your subject. For the setting i'm usually hand held so should try with a tripod

Some fantastic photos Chris. In my opinion well worth getting a bit chilly 😁 Interesting to see how there are always opposing thoughts on settings in photography. Robin Wong mentioned in one of his videos that he never turns of IBIS because the modern Olympus cameras are smart enough to notice they are on a tripod as there is no movement. On the other hand in my photography group there is a lady that uses a tripod all the time and has IBIS switched off permanently.

did you push iso limits to find out the cameras limits to get used to the camera ?

I'd like to say that your E-M1ii and my PEN-F will both produce that 5.5EV stabilisation but they do not have the finest movement. By that I mean they can jitter a bit. My E-M5ii only offers 4.5EV but same applies, the IBIS can kick. So yes turn off the IBIS on the tripod. With my G9 the stabilisation seems to be exceptionally fine and can take the last bit of vibration sting out of a tripod. That vibration will come from the ground, the sea slamming into that wall, an underground spring, road traffic. It all depends on the day, try both ways.

About the only difference I expect is the processor constantly looking for non-existent movement is needlessly using up battery life. (Unless you are in strong wind vibrating the tripod during long exposure, when it does serve a purpose).

Stunning photos as usual. Are these images edited or is this all in camera? If it's all in camera that is even more incredible.

If you shoot Raw you have to post process. If you shoot jpeg, the computer in the camera is using algorithms written by the manufacturer to do the processing for you.

On your EM1 MKII have you tried the 50/80 mega pixel hi res shot mode and how that treats the movement of the water? Not sure how it will work using ND filters though.
@ChrisBaitson
@ChrisBaitson Год назад
I have tried it. It creates some odd artefacts on the water and you can see the stitching if there is a wave breaking.

The last shot would have benefited from some white sea foam on the beach and a bit of dodging on the light house and wall at the beach. Maybe some color temp or such. Water looks too yucky. Framing was okay, time of day too late maybe. But I have made that mistake myself and I didn't have to cough up a video. So, you can only shoot what's there. Or not. Good efforts. I once had a guy tell me there was no light at some waterfalls as I shot in bad light in one spot. Well, the thing is, I was never coming back to this particular tourist spot or location and if I wanted any picture at all it was right then. I am way pickier now about what to shoot usually, but if it is somewhere I am not returning and want a record I will shoot it anyway. It's like the key to shooting great photos of people is to shoot great looking people in the right light. Which for great looking people is almost any light at all.
