Hey gang, are your blues solos getting stale? Tired of the same old licks. Well, you can change your blues solos from stale to great! Today I’ve got a simple trick to fix that for good. It’s about using chords to guide you. Yes, that’s it. No additional scales to learn, no arpeggios or theory. Just know your chords. Add that to your minor pentatonic and you’re in business.

Hi Mark, Great lesson as always, your range of material is impressive and your teaching style accessible and extremely useful and helpful. Don't take this the wrong way as I hope you can take a little ribbing......all of us out here in the youtube viewing audience have come to know the instructors/teachers/presenters as we see the videos week after week stretching back many years in many cases. We all know you better than you know any of us. I find reading other viewers comments is often insightful and I myself am no stranger to making comments on various youtube videos or sports blogs or the like, often of a rhetorical or humorous nature. Anyway where I am going with this is the last video of yours I watched and really enjoyed was on a Jump Blues Solo, this was about October or November and the video was from a few years back. I'd seen a few other videos of yours in the past few years so I was taken back a little.....wait a minute, "where's Mark?".....last time I saw him he was giving a instructional video and appeared like he just got off his job as a CPA and found time to do a video, time before that he was riffing guitar licks in a crewcut. Must have been during the lockdown and your son home from college was an "influencer" of another sort with a bag and a bong. I'm an old hippie with a ponytail and black coffee is the strongest I indulge in so I thought I'd poke a little fun...... Robbie in Colorado
@MarkZabel

LOL! Thanks Robbie. No blame to my kids as "influencers" there. (Which is a good thing!) And I don't know if it's legal yet in NY State. I'm not exactly a teetotaler, but no bags and bongs here. For some reason, just before the pandemic ... sometime like Xmas 2019 ... I decided to let my hair grow. The wife likes it, so there you go. Glad you liked the lesson. Rock on brother!

Okay Mark, so I’ve been trying to learn how to solo with little success. (Loooong time trying) Now I’m not paying too much attention to the parts about the third of each chord etc. (I recognize that it’s a huge factor in determining whether the chord is maj/min etc) But after watching your video once I was able (using “CAGED” chord shaped arpeggios) to start soloing a bit! I’m not saying I’m doing it well but it’s a start and, after not getting anywhere for ages I’m very excited! Thanks very much Mark!!

Everyone talks about using the chord tones but you do it with out the inferred pressure of the theories. Very useful and simple. Great lesson again thank you. Your demo solo was fab but as a new concept it would have helped me a lot to hear you show the difference between playing the straight A minor pentatonic, then gradually start also hitting the third from the coming D7 or E7 chord. Rather than going straight into a whizz all-over the neck lead break, inspiring, aspirational but hard to relate it to the lesson. No worries though, I'll practice this slowly for myself. I think this will be useful.

MZ, When staying in minor pentatonic box#1 how can you make it sound like you're playing the ii chord, iii chord, vi chord? because mostly it always sounds like its the I chord, not the other chords in the key ii,iii,IV, V, vi. I'm trying to stay in minor pentatonic Box#1 but able to make the blues licks sound like other chords in the key, instead of the blues licks always sounds like they are the I chord.
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Hi Wayne. I'm not sure of your question, because in the context of this video (standard blues I7, IV7, V7 in A) there are just as many chord tones in the Am pentatonic for D7 as there are for A7 - and the same ones in the chord. (1, 5 and 7, no 3rd). So "sounding like D7" shouldn't be any more difficult than "sounding like A7" and in my opinion it isn't any more difficult. The general answer to your question though is basically given in this video - play chord tones. And if a chord tone is out of the scale, then feel free to play that note - the note that's not in the scale. And don't worry about complex "what is the new scale" theory, because it's as simple as "I play the note because it's in the chord". That's the theory. Most melodies come from chord tones with scale tones OR chromatic tones connecting them. A bit deeper, the chord tones that really work well are the 1, 3, and 7. IMHO one of the weaknesses of strictly using the minor pentatonic over a blues (not minor blues) is that the 3rd of the I chord isn't in the scale. So that, IMHO, greatly limits being able to sound like the I chord - which is why I freely play the C# in an A7 blues (i.e., the 3rd - not in the minor pentatonic).

Those thirds are the missing link - chromatically from the minor & major third through the blue note chromatic run...high or low on A string rooted 9th's or G string dom7ths....glad I picked up the guitar to hear what you meant by the red dots.

Yes, 3rds are a key to getting the listener to hear the chords. Thanks for watching!

@@MarkZabel mark, which one of your courses has the key to the highway stuff on it? Or at least helps me learn those licks and theories?

Like this lesson a lot. Could you gear it towards country licks instead of Blues ? I know how to switch over from relative minor to relative major but just need some extra licks for my vocabulary. Thanks
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel Год назад
Thanks. Absolutely I could do that. It's probably more important in country, where the major 3rd is emphasized much more than in rock and classic blues.

Thank you.. this is magnificent.. I guess this only applies to major blues.. Can you show us the same trick with minor blues..

Hi. For some reason this was flagged as spam and I just saw it. First, thank you so much for your kind words. Both of those are great suggestions I'll put on my list. Thanks for stopping by. BTW, I have no clue why RU-vid flagged your comment. If you read it alongside of others that were flagged you'd be aghast! Yours stuck out - because there was no profanity or ugliness in it at all. So I'm dumbfounded as to why it didn't get through. Sorry for the delay in responding.

Hey Mark, i could not find the last reply i had yesterday from my phone but about that squier affiniry i ordered.. thats laural, i do have a pacitica with walnut, and a gregg bennet idk i think rosewood, and a talman half electric is purpleheart fretboard.. i first wanted a maple frethoard.. now i have a laural because it was 30 euro cheaper . is this alot different? less then maple, or does this not matter.. (i think, i cannot play on the tele also, because i practice 6 weeks😂. it goes fast; but after this one, i first try to learn things befote i buy others.. kind of addicted since 6 weeks to guitars after 18 year drug addiction😅😅 so it also helped in some ways als i watch your videos together with marty music, and music is win a lot because they are good to follow and also lots of speaking about the guitars.. i want to be able to work on my guitars myself.. i think it cannot be that hard? because it is not that its 1000 elements.. but im afraid that if i start i have fooled mtself thinking it was easy and screw it all up

Hi. Thanks for watching! A laurel fretboard is fine I think. Some people don't like the look of it. I think it looks good. I have a couple of guitars with laurel fretboards.
