Its the look good-feel good phenomenon. You put more effort into the way you present youself, the better you feel. You will disagree but its she only speaks the truth. You inward view of yourself is magnified by the way you dress and carry yourself.

Mimi is just saying we should respect ourselves and our bodies by taking care of ourselves in the best way possible. She's not telling you to do it for other people. It's so you can feel good about yourself and have a better life. In turn, people will respond better to you if you are happy and confident.
@lovelettersandlace
@lovelettersandlace 10 лет назад
I gathered from the video that she's saying to mostly do it for other people, to impress them. You can be happy and confident without being "dressed up" all the time. Being dressed up (for some) can be a confidence booster, but you shouldn't NEED that to be confident. And I feel that a lot of people disagree with her message, her videos usually have hardly any dislikes, this video has more dislikes than her other videos and it hasn't been up even a day. I would expect this video from one of the superficial, fake youtubers, not Mimi. I like Mimi because she is genuine and authentic, but her delivery in this video came off very poorly to me and many others.

But she's not saying 'take care of yourself', that's the thing... she's saying 'go above and beyond'. She's saying if you don't get your hair and nails done regularly, if you dress too casually, you are slacking - taking care of yourself is being clean, untangled, slightly groomed and presentable. That is NOT what she is referring to in this video.

feb0216 I kinda understand that, but there’s something about the physical acts of caring for yourself (flossing, exfoliating, little exercise, make up, any and all that you wanna do...) that seems to signal to your brain that you’re WORTH the effort. I’ve noticed a few times when I’ve put in a little extra effort, and then I do see some of those just gorgeous girls when I’m out and about, I think: hey it’s all good, we’re all doing our best, cool! I still feel more confident, secure and happy...just with my own personal best. No one gets anywhere by negative comparison. Sometimes I get ideas from others for jewelry, hairstyle, etc, but try not to put myself down because of it. Hope that makes sense! 😄 Just tryin to give ya a little pep talk, haha. Oh, and I’ve also noticed girls who may not be classically beautiful, but they look healthy and happy and like they care for themselves and I see them as beautiful anyway! Wish you well!

Those people who disagree with Mimi truly live in the world that does not exist. Mimi is so right here in this video, unfortunately not everyone gets the key idea. Do not take her points to the maximum, a little effort on your appearance does make a difference, I have the same experience everyday. I work in retail, where I start delivery shifts 5am wearing a tracksuit and no make-up, after 5-5.5 hours I go on my break through the city centre with tired face, all dusty and pray for people not to see me and they don't. Yet during my break I put on clean clothes, put some make-up on and here we are not talking about heavy make-up , just enough to look refreshed and put together. And guess what? I go same way through the city centre, and it's true, it is a whole new experience, I feel like people do actually see me, I feel more confident and most importantly I feel happier, because I am not hesitant to look at people, to smile and make them smile.

I think it is true as well, but a little more complex than what she explained. I have been really sick for the past 5 years now and really now if i were to dress well (which i have tried make up and cute clothes), that made me really feel REALLY bad, i think thats why the message came across wrong to some ears. When you are sick you are focussed on "surviving" if that makes sense, so you have no energy to support the fact that people might see you and talk to you and that you have to smile to them just because of the energy that it takes i know its kinda hard to understand but these interactions are very tiring when you are not well, and it is 100% true you WILL have more interactions. On the other hand, when i do have to talk to someone and my teeth are not clean i feel very embarrassed so, i recently made the commitment to brush my teeth every time i go out in the public transportations so basically groceries, drugstore, md no matter how i felt and that made a difference. I think the message sounded superficial, because when someone says "i dont have time" i rarely is because of time, maybe they are working on something that takes every bit of their energy, and energy is limited. But i remember how this was true before being sick, so i know what she is trying to say, but people have such a harsh life sometimes...

I abolutely agree. And even those saying they don't care about their looks will unconsciously judge others by their looks,too!! I feel this is just human naure, when we meet someone, we make a first impression in the first few seconds, mostly based on their looks, the way they talk, how they handle themselves etc. And everybody knows that first impression matters!! It may sound totally superfacial, but it is the truth.

Great video Mimi! I'm 45 and I have always prided myself in my appearance. I was considered a very "sexy and hot" 42 year old but the past 3 years have been emotionally difficult: painful breakup, burning out at work, depressed, losing my 2 pets of 20 years and of course hormonal and the natural changes associated with aging. As a result I don't recognize myself anymore: I have lost so much hair, I have so many wrinkles, I have gained 10lbs and don't exercise regularly anymore although exercise has ALWAYS been an effortless part of my daily life. This has made me avoid dressing up and even going to social events since no matter what I do i can't seem to look like I used to. I don't shop anymore, I don't do my hair, I don't do my makeup like I used to. In 2019 I want to reinvent myself , get back to my self care routine and change my look in order to get my confidence and beauty back. This video was inspirational, thank you!

Mimi, I don't wear makeup. I usually don't wear nail polish, I haven't used heat on my frizzy curls in close to six months. I like wearing sport shoes as opposed to heels, and jeans as opposed to skirts and dresses. But that's who I am! I don't care whether people judge me based on my appearance. If someone doesn't like me because of the way I look... then would I really want to be around that person, whether for a job or a relationship or a friendship? I feel self-conscious and uncomfortable when I'm 'dressed up'. You clearly feel differently, and I respect that. But I'm not going to change myself or my appearance to fit in or to make people like me or smile at me or say 'hello' to me. I like the way I look. And I'm not wearing the costume of an 'extra'. I'm wearing the costume that I came with: my personality, my intellect, my humour, my confidence... and I think that's what makes me the hero of my life. I personally believe that nobody wears the costume of an extra, because no one is an extra! We are all heroes, we are all in charge of our own lives. You said that this is a superficial world and we have to play by the rules. No, we don't have to! We can if we want to - you clearly enjoy playing by these rules, so go ahead! But I'm not going to. I'm a freshman in college, and most of the girls in my class dress up and wear makeup and yeah, they have billions of people around them all the time. I don't do any of that, but I'm doing well in class and I've made two or three friends who like me because of my personality and my interests. I don't like being around too many people. I'm an introvert, and I don't want more than three friends at any given point of time. If I'd dressed up, I wouldn't have been myself. And what's the point of not being yourself? If you or anyone else wants to wear makeup or dress up or wear heels or do anything to make yourself feel better, go ahead! You should do everything in your power to make yourself happy. And I know you do it for yourself, Mimi, but there are a lot of people who only wear this 'costume' to make others like them. And that's something I wish I could change. Yes, you should always dress your best. But 'best' doesn't necessarily mean makeup or heels. To me, 'best' means something that makes you happy. I like wearing sport shoes because they're comfortable, and I can walk to college and get fitter. The only accessories I wear are earrings and maybe a headband sometimes, because too many accessories weigh me down. I don't like being the centre of attention, and I'm very happy with the way my life is going right now, because I AM dressing my best. I'm not dressing the way you want me to, Mimi, but I'm dressing the way I want myself to. And that's what matters. So... I don't agree with the message you're sending out on this video. But that's my personal opinion only. Can't wait for your next fashion video, though. I like your fashion sense. :)

Thanks Mimi. People like to lie to themselves about the looks don't matter saying. Yes it does. If you're dirty looking, people won't respect you or take you seriously, but for some reason they like to lie to other people to make them think looking bad is ok and make them think that's being themselves. Just put in a little bit of effort in your look and see how people treat you.

Mimi...you are so right. As a former sales person, they drill this into your head. Dress for success! It is true - people's first impression of you is how you look. That is what you are judged on until they know otherwise. You don't always have to wear a lot of makeup, or dress really fancy. Good personal hygiene and neat looking clothes will take you a long way. People see image before character. Thanks Mimi - for the reminder! :)

And to respond to the person below me - it wouldn't matter if it was today or in prehistoric times...you were still chosen as a mate by how you look - so this whole superficial things goes back farther than you probably would like to admit!!
@lovelettersandlace
@lovelettersandlace 10 лет назад
rdemrow1 I know you might not believe this, but some people do chose mates not based on looks. What about the blind? What about people who marry for money? You can't say that EVERY person was chosen by their mate based solely on how they look.
@rdemrow1
@rdemrow1 10 лет назад
lovelettersandlace I never said all, but an overwhelming majority of people judge first on looks, then on character. I'm not saying it's fair, just that it is. Blind, money...those are small percentages odd people. Fractions of a percent, most likely. Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it so.

ann gurl I, too, understand what you are saying and I admire intelligence in people myself. And some of us go to great lengths to value content rather than packaging. I do get it. But if you think image isn't important at all...consider this. You need a gallon of milk. The man on the left is well groomed, clean, has good manners, smiles and looks you in the eye when speaking to you. The man on the right is dirty, smelly, ornery and rude. Who will you buy your milk from? Just sayin'.

"Appearance talks." Very true, Mimi. I also learnt that people will always notice what your shoes look like, and this will determine how they treat you. Always wear good shoes. I am a teacher. Of course you should dress well. What are you teaching your students when you dress well? You're teaching them to be properly groomed for work. We call this the hidden curriculum.
@Anamify28
@Anamify28 10 лет назад
Mimi, you could be the best dressed person, perfectly groomed and everything, but the minute someone has a conversation with you, that's when they'll really judge you. It's your ideas and thoughts, the way you treat other people, and how you make them feel. It's your attitude, your facial expressions and eyes speak more about you. These things are what allow you to be memorable or to have more friends, be more likeable etc. Who cares about the impressions people get from you for being far away for eg when walking in a mall. Do you really want hi's and hello's from people who are just wanting to do that because of your looks. It's quite shallow... I interview people often and yes of course I cant deny that their looks form the first impression, but after having had a conversation with them, I don't even remember what I thought of them in the first 10 seconds. It's what they can bring to the table that I remember. Of course I'm not talking about advertising and modelling industry. Mimi, I don't think people click on your video just because you put up a good looking thumbnail. It's for the content. We know you always have great things to talk about and inspirational messages. If you had just been a pretty face for these past few years on RU-vid, you would not be where you are. It's who you are as a person. Sure your looks must've gotten people's attention at first, but trust me people would not keep coming back to your videos if they didn't like your personality and the content. I'm sure you work hard on your content and can appreciate what I mean. If you bring value to the world, you will get respect back.

saraeuniceful for sure you're totally right. All I'm saying is that one should put more effort towards becoming a "deeper" person, learning more, treating others right etc. Anyone can (and pretty much everyone will) dress well for an interview. People come in their best outfit so you dont ignore it but you learn to look past that eventually. What this means is that for healthy, long-term relationships - be it with friends or employers - your inner self matters way more :)

I disagree with people saying this is a wrong message for children. Be open minded, what is wrong in telling kids you should take care of yourself? I think this is very true, whether people want to accept it or not appearance does matter because we do live in a world where everyone judges. And besides that, when you are dressed up you just feel better about yourself overall! Do it for you, take care of yourself.
@Anamify28

This video can apply to you in different manners depending on what stage of life you're in. I see girls in high school these days who are getting up early to do make up and straighten their hair, but wouldn't put that same hour of valuable energy towards something more useful like learning a new skill, studying for a test etc. They have it wrong because society has drilled into their head that looks matter A LOT. There are some kids who are able to manage it all, but a lot of them forget why they're really in school because they're so busy paying attention to looks.

To all the people out there criticizing, I was thinking pretty much the same thing at the beginning of the video. But if for Mimi, looking and feeling her best is when she is dressed properly and dolled up and pretty, you can choose to do ANYTHING that makes you feel better about yourself, wether it be makeup/clothes related or not. I think the main message here was about doing something for yourself no matter what it is. You could very well be working in construction in dirty clothes all day, when you come back home and pour yourself a bath and do a facemask. It will not really impact on how you look during the day, but it will definitely make YOU feel different about yourself. Think a little deeper guys.

It's funny because when you end up putting the amount of effort into your appearance that makes you the most confident, whether that be a full face of makeup and groomed pin straight hair, or little to no makeup and natural hair, the confidence you exude is what draws people in. For years, I straightened my hair and put on makeup to make me look like a doll, and tried so hard to extenuated my exterior because I felt so little about who I was internally. Now, I have been wearing my hair naturally curly for the past few years, and wear however much makeup I want to that day. Maybe a little to accentuate my favorite features, maybe more to practice the artistry, but either way I try to walk out of my house and feel confident with what I've put my effort into that day and even though I wouldn't say I'm any more "societally beautiful" than I was back then.. (I'm not as thin, I have very curly hair, and I don't show off my body as I used to) I get more genuine recognition for my beauty now hair now than I ever did before. I can't go one day without getting a compliment on my curls now, and I get recognized for being beautiful a lot more than I did when I put so much effort in all those years. And it wasn't because of anything other than growing into myself and being happy with who I am, I'm not there yet, but because I'm so much more loving towards myself than I was all those years ago, it resonates in my eyes and my smile. My eyes hold a light in them now that all the makeup in the world couldn't evoke. People are drawn and attracted to souls, not masks. So it isn't always about making yourself suitable for others, it's about making yourself suitable internally for yourself and others will be drawn to you like moths to a flame. It's when you love yourself before you work on the exterior that the light you have internally, can't help but finally shine out!

Mimi, you call us your "beautiful friends" without seeing what we look like... because isn't our beauty within ourselves? I agree that you should respect yourself, be confident in your own skin and look after your body by exercising and eating right. I'm not even denying that looking presentable and professional is important. HOWEVER, I'm really disappointed that you mentioned time and time again that we need to put on make up and prioritise spending a lot of time grooming because people judge us in an instant. Just because people are shallow, doesn't mean we need to stoop to their level. We can show them another way - we can overcome. You can definitely look good and 'put together' without hiding your true face under layers of make up, without changing your natural hair into something you think is more on-trend and without wearing the latest fashion if you don't like them or can't afford them. There are people who have suffered accidents, or are born with physical deformities or disabilities that are completely not their fault. Are we to say that because they're not physically stunning by the world's standards that they are doomed to be a 'blurry extra in the background' who will not get anywhere in life? Or could we encourage them and value them for their real worth (kind heart, beautiful faith, brilliant ideas, sense of humour, loyalty in friendships etc.)? Rather than say "this is how the world works, image is everything, it's just how it is" - how about we be game changers? How about we shift the dominant paradigm? How about we start valuing what really matters? I can see your point but I don't think the overall message of this video is helpful. You usually send out really positive messages about working hard, chasing your dreams, living a healthy life and being confident in yourself. I would like to see more of those videos... and would actually love to see one of you without make up on - I am sure your skin would shine more beautifully from its natural glow than from foundation! Ladies (and gentlemen), you were wonderfully made in God's image - gloriously, everlastingly beautiful. I hope you know that =)

It's majorly about respect rather than you always need to look perfect otherwise you're not as good, I get the message you send and I see the positive intention, I just think it's a little too much focus on trying to make us feel good on the outside, because even if we might feel good being dressed up and all, when we're not having all those things around us, we might still feel unworthy and not appreciate and respect ourselves the way we really should. It's about the inside. You only feel better being dressed up because you take convidence from it. However, confidence should not depend on your look. Only if it doesn't, it is real confidence. And that's the only kind of confidence anybody really needs. You need to always look at the root, why do you feel like you need to do something? Do you do it to cover up how deep down you do NOT feel comfortable about yourself? Because if you DID, you would not worry about it. You would spend that time that you spend to deny how you truly feel about yourself on something that actually shows respect to you, so doing something you love. Now that could be makeup and hair and fashion, then it's a whole different story. I don't want people to find yet another excuse to deny their true feelings, but to find true confidence within themselves by excepting themselves unconditionally and embracing that exact confidence to the fullest. Mimi, I still appreciate and love you and your videos, but this is myself being honest and giving you a bit of a feedback from my perspective. :) Much love to everyone reading, x

I understand that we live in a superficial world, but dressing up and making our appearance more "acceptable" only goes so far. First impressions are formed in the first 10 seconds, but these impressions that are formed in an instant can also be lost in an instant. I find that people who emphasize their looks only notice a difference in the way people look at/treat them simply because being "pretty" or "put together" makes them feel more confident. However, I think that it is a wonderful thing when we can be confident without the crutch of appearances. It took me a while to reach this point, but now I notice I walk tall and attract attention even when i'm bare faced, in a t-shirt and sweatpants, simply because I feel worthy and grateful, not because I look perfect. I think if looking good will give you a boost of confidence, then there's nothing wrong with that - but keep in mind that appearances do not hold that much power unless you let it. Thanks for reading my opinion ;)

So much truth in this video. We as humans depend so much on visual cues, and personal appearance and physical presence speaks plays a huge role in how you are read by others around you. It seems that a lot of younger people these days think it's cool to look like you just don't care, but it can definitely leave a negative impression about their capabilities when they enter the adult world!

I totally understand what was you, Mimi, talking about, and I am completely agree with you. The video wasn't about ''You should dress yourself good in order to please other people'' as some girls here probably thought. Dear girls, just re-watch the video and you'll get the idea. :) Me, personally, when one day I was thinking about the same topic, I randomly thought what if all the people were beautiful, well dressed, smelled good, etc. Would it make all people happy? Would we then finally live in a better world? Yes, and no. But in our nature is to strive for beauty. Are you fascinated by the beautiful green nature? By the beautiful and sophisticated architecture of Italy, Czech republic, France, China or Japan? Have you ever felt the aesthetic pleasure by contemplating it? Humans were trying through of their existence to get closer to perfection and beauty, because it distracts us from all the bad things which are happening with us in our lives. Thus, it can really help us to feel better and more happy. We can not deny the strength of visual perception. The main thing is when you fell good, everything around you starts to be better also, and if your beautiful and neat look will make you feel good, why not to start caring of yourself a little more every day? ;)

I used to be the more put together, no hair out of place, watching my weight, doing my makeup, dress to impress kinda girl. Not that I'm a mess now, but as I've gotten older and started to find myself and grow into who I really am, I started caring less about what other people think of me and started valuing myself more in how comfortable I feel in my own skin. Yes, of course I think putting some effort into our appearances is a sign of self respect but I don't agree with some of the comments in the video that people may look at my hair, and my nails and so on. A person who is sure of who they are and what they stand for doesn't need appearances nor approvals from others to feel good about themselves. Just my opinion and experience.

Thanks for making this video! I found you randomly via the recommendations page and clicked on this video! I started working from home with my own business mid last year and during a crazy busy month, I kept putting myself second to my work. Towards the middle of that month I started feeling nasty and ugly and my self esteem sort of dropped even though my business was doing the best it ever had! Then I realized it was because I wasn't getting ready in the morning anymore! Such a simple thing as brushing out my hair and putting on some light make up made all the difference! I wasn't going out to see anyone. I had no meetings to go to. But doing those things made me feel human again! From then on I've made it a point to get ready in the morning even if I have a days worth of work ahead on me. As someone who's lived though this experience you're talking about, I 100% support this idea and video! You gotta have the respect for yourself! Thanks again for the video!

I could easily say the same thing about those who "like" it, that you aren't confident enough about yourself to NOT wear makeup, that you feel like you have to plaster yourself with hair extensions, fake makeup, etc... to feel pretty because your confidence and self esteem is extremely low. . . but I have more class than that. Shame on you for judging people who disagree with you by insinuating they do not take care of themselves. Your emotional state is pretty messed up yourself dear if you think that.

Wow what you said about dressing like an extra in your own life movie really struck a chord with me. I am 36 and have been getting a bit down lately and feeling like I can't be bothered to make an effort anymore, but I realise I have to snap out of this negative attitude. I am going to start doing like I did when I was younger, painting my nails every 2-3 days, face masks twice a week, and pedicure once a week. Then I will start getting a new wardrobe. I realise now the reason why I feel depressed is because I have stopped making an effort.

Certain pieces that are classics are always in style regardless of year or trend. Case and point a button down shirt and some jeans/trousers and a nice pair of shoes (be it flats or heels or booties) are always in style. You can have a tiny wardrobe (minimalist) and make it work. Contrary to popular belief there is nothing wrong with wearing the same outfit regularly.

While I see your point, I also think you misunderstood her. And personally I do agree with her to some extent because much as people like to say they don't judge on sight the reality is most do. We always access whether or not we think someone would fit into a certain role based on how they look. Whether or not we treat people differently in terms of respect and the benefit of the doubt is the defining factor in judgement I think.
@haaladarrlyn1223
@haaladarrlyn1223 10 лет назад
She referred to makeup because to be fair most women and some men nowadays use it to enhance their appearance while I don't agree with being dependant on it (which I don't think she has said) I do think it is a useful tool to portray a certain attitude as for the straight hair comment, I assume that was a dig at her own hair texture which I don't blame her for as speaking as someone with curly hair it is a hassle to deal with. As for some people not affording it, I don't really get the sensitivity surrounding that as most would agree if you can't afford it, don't do it. It's not her fault she is more fortunate than some, and thus cannot cater to every person who clicks on the video. Like all things take it with a grain of salt, and pick and choose what applies to your life.

Looking after ones self is making an investment in yourself You look after your car or home, you don't run them into the ground or don't clean them and treat them badly. Make an investment in your health and appearance and you feel better about yourself wether that be working out ,eating healthy ,glam. Natural whatever works for you. It's not about being fake , superficial or a price tag. It's about being the best you can be, do it for you and that attracts positivity and good things to your life.😊

The people complaining in the comments are people that are missing the point. What you do at home is your business but when you represent for your brand or another company or even to achieve something at anytime that involves the impression of other people....you need to put effort into yourself. If you don't look like someone of professional influence, no one is going to take you seriously. Period. You can sugar coat that mind set all day that people should accept whatever you have but that's not how the real professional world works. Your effort shows through how you carry yourself in any genre of work before someone chooses to hire you. People that are making it in that influential world understand that and utilize it and that's why they make the big bucks. If that's not what you want, then don't take her advice personally because obviously it doesn't apply to you.

Everything she said is true. I'm also someone who was at one time a certified image consultant. And yes the way you present yourself does make a difference in the way you feel about yourself and the impression you give others. But at the same time being beautiful on the inside and letting that beauty shine through makes a world of difference too! So yes, take that extra time to look your best, but don't forget to smile at people and be kind 😊

Great video mimi, I don't know why I see some negative comments, but I'm not here to judge people but I want to share what I understand from this video, Mimi is trying to tell us that ur style define ur personality and when u dress up and go out to the society we will feel more comfortable and confident not because of these shallow stuffs that we put on our face, hair or body but because we treated ourselves just like we deserve and we showed respect for ourselves. And I'm not saying that we should dress up everyday sometimes we feel lazy or a little depressed that we want to dress down like put on a cardigan with leggings and boots and go outside, it's not a mistake if it happens sometimes but not everyday, and for people who are saying that Mimi is superficial you can open any book or website or see an image consultant to know more about image and first impressions. And about people's judges, if we dressed up or down we still under people judgements but our role must be to trust ourselves and ignore what negative people say as long as we're taking care of ourselves and respect the inner and outer beauty in us.

Appearance does not change your life as much as changing your personality to a better person. I know looking prettier makes you feel confident, but it makes you feel more self-conscious when you aren't groomed. And why do girls always think dressing casually and not wearing makeup is not 'pretty'.

I am also a image consultant and makeup artist as well as blogger. I had done a couple of speeches in Mexico and what I can say about dressing, is that if you dress properly knowing and using your colors, personality, style, proportion you will nail it. That makes a well dress women. I can also add that sometimes we feel with a little of depression and what can help us is to do our makeup, go to a spa or do our nails and hair. With this exercise you can go then on a mirror and see how you see yourself. You will say wow this is not how I feel and you can instantly start believing and feeling how you look. This is a therapy you can do to pamper yourself. You will instantly act different, optimistic and people will see that security on you and also you will be able to transmit that to others and start changing moods. I sometimes dress to impress of course everybody does, but what is important is to reflect what you are. Thanks for your videos mimi. You are a smart girl. Sorry for my english. #likepriscila

Hi Mimi, Excellent video and advice! Thank you for explaining image and human psychology so well. I am with you 100%. New subscriber onboard :) As for certain comments, the topic at hand is image and how human psychology works. Chiming in with 'I don't need clothes to cover myself because I have a good personality' is inadmissable. Let's get real. People do treat you differently based on how you carry yourself. We live in a shallow world. A person with a good personality who dresses up will do better in life as compared to a person with a good personality who does not.

First of all, I am not trying to criticise you or spread negativity, and I do get your point of feeling your best when you are looking your best. I mean dressing up is fun and trust me, I have a beauty channel, I love everything makeup/fashion related. But I think we should never forget that we are all REAL PEOPLE not some perfect barbie dolls. Please don't get me wrong when I say this but I feel like society already puts a lot of pressure on us to be perfect and I don't think we should put even more pressure on ourselves.... personally, I used to be sooo worried about the way I looked but I slowly discovered that there are things that are like 10000x more important... I just feel our society has this obsession with always looking good and while looking good is great, you should be able to feel good about yourself even if you just wear sweats, no makeup and a messy bun. But hey I do think this is a very interesting video and I agree with some things :) just wanted to share my opinion

GoldenSnowFairy I think should be a balance in this, I used to be very lazy with the clothes (and yet I am) and a day I was with a friend who came to visit us and there was a girl in the street, my first though it was: Ohhh how beautiful! and I was thinking that when my friend told me: Hey... look that girl, is like you! And when I return to see at the girl, I didn't believe it! But then.. I realize that we can see us better if we take care a little bit about our clothes, makeup and that even can help us to have more confident in ourselves.

So I feel as though I agree and disagree with this video. I definitely understand the point that Mimi is trying to make. I do agree that we should all dress in a way that makes us feel good about ourselves, because it does have an affect on our day to day lives. However, what I feel this video fails to address is that, that standard differs from person to person. It's funny because my personal experience is the exact opposite if what she is promoting. I used to be the kind of person who ALWAYS dressed up. This included a full face of makeup, hair always done, nails done, and what I thought was a cute outfit. I would get complimented a lot, and I felt good about myself. The problem with this, is that it was from a superficial standpoint. I THOUGHT I felt good about myself, when in reality this could not have been further from the truth. I liked the attention I would receive, and I thrived on the constant validation. As a result, I could not bare to go out in public unless I looked my absolute best. I was so insecure of my natural face, and that if people saw it I would not be treated in the same way. About a year ago, I decided I didn't want to feel that way anymore, so I started wearing less and less makeup. Slowly I saw a transformation in myself. Nobody treated me different, people still liked me, and more importantly I started to really like myself. Now, I don't wear makeup o the daily anymore, and I have never felt better. I work in a school setting with children, and I love being able to run around with them at recess. I'm one of the few people who do, because I am not concerned with getting a little dirty, or messing up my makeup. I love being able to build relationships with these kids outside of the classroom, and am able to do so because I let myself have fun. The best feeling is being able to splash cold water on my face with no fear or ruining my makeup. For me, letting go of all of the typical standards of how I "should look" allowed me to become the star of my life, instead of just an extra. Now, that does not mean I never or dress up, because there are days that I do. But i truly do it because I feel like it, not because I feel like I HAVE to. I can walk with my head held high whether in a t-shirt and shorts sweaty on a playground, or in a nice dress headed to a wedding. The idea is to wear what makes YOU feel beautiful and confident, whether that is glammed out, or more casual. There is NO right or wrong way :).

Awesome! Good on you! I'm a teacher too and can't believe some teachers wear stiletto heels to work - I'm always running around with the kids! =) I had a different experience to Mimi's as well. I grew up around boys and then went to a girls only high school. I often felt left out because I was different. There was a lot of pressure and maybe I caved a few times but I learnt from those experiences. I decided that, rather than conforming to being a certain way, to delight in my differences because nothing was worth changing who I was. I'm short but I hate wearing heels, so why should I hurt my feet like that? I can't stand the feel of lipstick on my lips, so why should I put myself through that discomfort? I have very visible veins on my legs that I could spend thousands of dollars to 'fix' but since my doctor said the issue was purely cosmetic and didn't impact on my health, why would I when I could buy lots of books instead? =) I decided to believe that (at least some) people could see me for me AND like me for me. If a guy was turned off by my veiny legs, then he's not the kind of guy I could trust to love me through all of life's journey anyway. I was single for years but held on to the belief that there would be someone who would love me for me. The man I'm married to now loves how I look naturally and I stood out to him at the party where we first met because I WASN'T scantily dressed! =)

What women could accomplish if they didn't have to worry about this stuff... So many hours that go into grooming, styling etc ... Imagine, what we could do with all that time... When my daughter goes to school, I want her to focus on learning new things, having fun and getting the most out of her education. She doesn't exist to be merely pretty, she's not a decoration, and no woman should have to be.

So what you're trying to say is that girls/women need to be put together from head to toe so people will not judge them and will smile at them more often? Every single thing about that is just wrong. Confidence, positivity and beauty comes from within. From the energy you give off, from the eye contacts you make with people, from the smiles you give, from nice gestures etc. And no, its not: when you look sharp externaly, you start to thing sharper internaly. IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Your video kind of sums up everything that is wrong with the society these days. Materialism and cherishing and focusing on the less important things in life. I too do my hair wear a little bit of makeup and dress nicely every day always have my nails done, but my perception is totally different.

I couldn't agree more with you, but I do find that she is right in the sense that she knows she is not going to be the one that changes it. Women since the beginning of time have been altering themselves in order to appease it is both a power and a curse. Women that wear those double digit necklaces that elongate their necks, or the foot binding in Japan, or Egyptians wearing charcoal on their eyes and removing body hair. Women have done this since the beginning of time and while I would say most women are disgusted that this is how we are treated, the fact remains that it has not changed in all of history so she is saying to go with it and have fun! I agree having done plenty of my own social experiments all while being happy inside and taking care of my personal care....hairstyles matter you will be judged whether you have a pixie hairstyle, straight hair, or dreadlocks. You will be judged whether you want to be less fit or more fit. You will be judged whether you want to dress solely for comfort and find something that is trendy. We will be judged regardless and just as long as we are okay with how we are perceived and judged that is all that matters. We live with ourselves and get what we want out of life by our own accord. May each woman paint their life as they so choose. I personally am very hippie like, but that won't get me too far in this society with what I want to achieve. I love dreadlocks, and for me that is my bucket list hairstyle I will get when I am ridiculously successful because then it won't matter! :)

I had similar experience, about in the middle of my second year college i had a huge fight with my friends i decided to come out of where i was i changed my place. Before that i didn't care about my looks but the next few days after the fight i decided to make a makeover for myself. Guess what? I got my grades higher. The ones who fought with me started talking to me. It is depressing how we have to present ourselves good for others. But that makeover changed my life. I feel more positive. I got more motivated in studies. I'm successful in what I'm doing. And i know who are real to me. Having a makeover is so good physically and mentally. Whenever you feel like not dressing up or low watch videos like this. They truly inspire you. Be You. Be Beautiful. Because you deserve all good things.

I know a lot of well-dressed & well-groomed people who are very insecure. Having a good image doesn't neccesarily mean happinnes, otherwise models would be the happiest people on the planet. Spoiler alert: they aren't.

I really want to THANK YOU because yesterday I've decided to follow your advice and today I had a great day!!!!!! People talked to me at the subway and helped me which never happen and even smile at me!!!! I feel better now and more secure!! I realize that a big part of the things I don't like are cause by me indirectly. I always expect a good treatment and respect from others when I'm the first who doesn't. Thank you so much for saying the truth even if is hard to accept it but that's the first step to improve. THANK YOU.

I get your point that first appearances mean alot but at the same time this is only for business women who are going on an interview, for the most part putting on makeup and putting 'effort' into your look everyday is just a waste of time for most women and instead what they should be spending their time on is things that make them FEEL more confident on the inside and not "look it" on the outside. real confidence is worth out time not faking it. Confidence>Clothing

I would add that respecting yourself is not only looking good, wearing makeup and clean cloths, but also keeping the place you live in clean and tidy. Because I have several examples of girls who look good, wear heels, makeup, go to salons, but their flats are dirty and uncosy. For me it means that they don't really respect and love themselves. Your appearance is smth you also do for others, but keeping your home cosy is smth that you do only for yourself :)

I personally don't agree with everything you said in this video, but I do like some of your points. The thing I don't like is that you seem to think that we NEED to wear makeup, wear nice clothes, etc to look good. I understand wanting to look your best, but I don't think I really need makeup to do it. The biggest difference in how people view you is your *confidence* Yes wearing makeup and nice clothes can help it, but that's not everything. I personally prefer to wear no makeup and simpler outfits (I do style my hair because I find it fun XD) because that's what I feel most comfortable and confident in. I like to dress up occasionally, for example when I go out for dinner but not when I'm just going to school or work. And I think only dressing up sometimes makes you look that much better when you do it, because it's not what you normally wear. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that's just what I think about the whole thing :)

violett jai I don't wear my pyjamas all day, so I don't see your point. I wear what I think feels comfortable and that makes me feel confident. And actually, a lot of people compliment my fashion choices, even if my clothes are simple and comfortable.

I tend to agree with you but I take issue with the attempt to validate basing respect level on appearance. Yes to an extent but there is taking it too far (visit LA) and anyone who does that is the epitome of a**hole. Some of THE most successful and/or talented people in the world, aren't much to look at.

You said you hoped no one would see you walking through the mall without make up and not dressed up, and when you were dressed up and groomed a lot of people smiled at you. It was probably because you looked more confident and smiled at the people as well. Now think, wouldn't they smile at you if you weren't dressed up and had make up on if you just looked confident and happy? Because in my opinion it's important to dress up and look well groomed but you also have to be confident without that mask...

I absolutely agree. The truth is I myself would judge this as superficial everytime I'm not dressed up, but when I do dress up, I would realise that dressing up makes me feel amazing. And yes, we have different dreams in life , but we d rather fulfill our dreams feeling great about ourselves. Think of self image like an endorphin releaser. The same kind that gets released by your body when you workout :) so proud you had the guts to put up this video !!!:*

She doesn't say you need to dress in a certain way to impress someone. It doesn't really matter if you are a girly girl or a tomboy or you have edgy style. Your style is up to you. And people who are saying that only vain people judge others by their looks are not right. Maybe it's not very nice but it's the truth because it's in our genes. Besides your look can really show a lot of your character. If I were a boss, I would never hire a person who would come to me in a dirty clothes beacuse it shows she or he is not taking this work seriously or can't manage his own time. You don't have to wear diamonds and heels and dreeses. You don't have to curl or straighten your hair. You don't have to wear bright lipsticks or bronzer or blush. It's really up to you. You just have to look clean and put together in whatever clothes or style you like. And I think that is only what Mimi really wanted to say.

Omg Mimi this is so true! I've been working retail for 5 years at the same store and last January I got promoted to a management position. I always valued my appearance because I've always agreed with what you are saying in this video; that it's important to look your best to feel your best. So a couple of months into my new job, I could barely find the time to brush my hair lol. The long, stressful hours (the dreaded "clopen"!!) majorly affected how I looked, and how I felt. It was clear to those around me that I was thrown off balance and didn't have my shit together when I would hustle into the store every morning with my Starbucks and messy top knot. The store was all I thought about and I started really not to give a shit about my appearance. It became low priority. BUT when we had our first corporate visit, I remember thinking omg I have to get a new outfit, get my eyebrows done, do my hair, my nails, everything. I came into work looking like my old self and that's when I really realized what people had been trying to tell me: I changed. I put myself so low on the list and it took a toll on me. The minute I realized all over again the importance of appearance especially when you work in fashion I made a conscious effort to look my best, even if that meant only wearing concealer and mascara. You have to try to find a way/time because you are only cheating yourself if you don't. I recently have moved onto another position that involves hiring people and I always make sure I look clean, presentable, and on point during an interview so I can feel confident and like the girl in charge. Do it for yourself! It has definitely made a difference for me ☺
