Great video looking at doing this to my 2013 in the summer. Need to do all 3 coolant loops as well.
@AdmAuAlmada
@AdmAuAlmada 27 дней назад
You ever do all three coolant loops?
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 27 дней назад
I didn't but I wish I would have! I think not doing the coolant loops caused the premature failures/problems I have with my 2011 Volt.

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic Just overheating? I need to get those done on my 13.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 27 дней назад
@AdmAuAlmada no. one of the coolant control valves was sticking (maybe caused by dirty coolant) causing improper flow and I think this may have caused coolant heater to fail thus not properly regulating battery temperature and now I have failed cells in the battery. no real proof this is what happened but it is probable.

It is my understanding that you check the fluid level with the engine running. With the engine off, the fluid level rises and gives you a false level reading.
@HowToDoitright
@HowToDoitright 7 месяцев назад
So you put less than what you removed. Because you removed 6quart and you filled with 5.5qt then you check level and it was still high and you let it drain even more. So how many quart it actually took? 5? I just checked my level and it bleeded out almost 1/2 quart when I check level. I’m scared to remove it. Thinking about putting it back in.
@HowToDoitright
@HowToDoitright 7 месяцев назад
Do you check the oil fill level when the engine is off or engine is on? I don’t have a car lift so I don’t know how can I have the car level and unscrew the plug underneath the car to check if any is dripping out. If I put it on jack then it won’t be level. 😢
@danwat1234
@danwat1234 Год назад
Is checking the fluid level this way invalid if vehicle is at an angle, on ramps? Assume so
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic Год назад
I wold say that is a proper assumption.
@sargetester99

Engine is supposed to be running when unscrewing the level plug to check the level of fluid, ....right!??
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic Год назад
I'll be honest service information does not specifically say. I did not have it running when I did the final check. So if you know different please let me know. I know GM products with a dip stick it should be running in Park or Neutral but not really sure about when using the level inspection plug.

How often should one change the fluid? My volt has 180,000 km for a 2012 not sure if it’s been replaced once…
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic Год назад

Should have take out or at least make sure you can slack the filler plug before draining the oil.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic Год назад
may I ask why? it was gonna come out 1 way or the other because the fluid needed changed.
@bmw803
@bmw803 Год назад
@TheDisgruntledMechanic I was explained this by a mechanic. If you drain the fluid and that top plug won't come off for a reason, you're screwed. Always make sure the filler plug loosens up properly, than drain your fluid. Makes sense to me!!!! But for the VOLT , you might be OK as you can fill thru that overfill plug.
@fixman88
@fixman88 7 месяцев назад
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic A few months ago I changed the manual transmission fluid on my 2007 Hyundai Elantra and I read the same thing: make sure you can remove the filler plug before you pull the drain plug because if the filler plug is seized you're going to be in the unenviable position of having drained the fluid but unable to refill it (rendering the vehicle undriveable). Luckily I had no issues changing mine.
