Thanks so much! Just what I was looking for. I know next to nothing about color theory, so I am very exited you do. 😃 I am stitching my niece a bicycle with a basket full of flowers. Her bike is purple but the pattern uses pink colors for the bike. I’m going to give this a try and change the colors of the pattern to shades of purple. There are five different colors so wish me luck. 💜

Thank you, you are the first person I've come across who actually explains more about how to select the different tones. I have another question though - if colors near to each other in a column are most likely to work well together for one color, could you use the individual rows to build a full color palette? Is there a trick to that? Say, for example, if I used 3840, 159, 964, 955, & 10 (in designing a new pattern) for my color palette. Is that how to use the color chart? Mine just arrived today and I'm new to color theory so I'm a little unsure how to best use the chart.
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig Год назад
Yeah "in general" the tones in a column are usually all related in some way, like you'll see in one column the pinks are all "dusty" coloured (less saturated, maybe a bit more blue & grey), and in another they're very vibrant and warm toned. I have a book review that you may find helpful, it's in my channel but also on my website, it's got great colour palettes in it -- peacockandfig.com/2021/10/book-review-colour-confidence-embroidery-trish-burr/ It depends on the kind of palette you want to build too, like monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, etc -- that likely would mean you couldn't use tones all from one column. Hope that helps! 😊

@@peacockandfig Thanks for the quick response! So what you're saying is the column colors are related, in families, but the rows aren't? The book looks amazing, I'll have to see if I can get a copy!
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig Год назад
Yeah I don't think the rows are related, but you could reach out to DMC directly and ask how they put the chart together. 😊

I put a large grid on white paper, put in all of the DMC color numbers and names, and cut a swatch from each color that is attached to the grid. I have them in page protectors in a binder to keep them clean and organized. That has worked really well for me, of course I already had at least 1 skein of every color on hand to begin with. I design my own patterns and it helps to be able to see the exact color and sheen of the different floss numbers. It makes blending much easier. If I need to look further I can take a skein out of the cabinet for each of the colors I am looking at and compare the whole skein, once I narrow down the colors using the swatches.

Haha yeah I considered making my own swatch card at one point, but I didn't want to buy the entire series of floss as a lot of colours I don't use in my designs (not a fan of muddy or muted tones). It's great having them all visible though, having the real floss makes such a difference. 🙂

Peacock & Fig I had bought a bulk pack one time that had one of every color, I don't use many of them either, by choice, but the pattern program I use to get the base design will throw some of those colors in every now and then.
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 6 лет назад
Yeah I adapt my patterns if I'm importing a rough drawing or something, I take out the colours I don't like. I rarely do photo conversions these days anyway so it's all good. 🙂

Can you please explain how is the DMC card to read? What is the meaning of the small boxes at the side of each colour? How are the numbers of the colors to understand ? Can I found which colour has replaced a discontinued colour ? Thank you so much for your videos !
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 6 лет назад
Hi there! The little boxes tell you which types of floss that colour comes in (six strand embroidery floss, various weights of pearl cotton, etc). There's a page near the back that tells you which "article number" indicated at the very top of each column is which floss type. There are also smaller numbers under each colour that has been replaced by another colour number, and the colour number key at the back will put discontinued numbers in brackets (and tell you which column the replacement colour is in). 🙂

Peacock & Fig thank you very much for your quick respond !! I am looking since months for an explanation and I am glad you gave it to me finally!! Could you please find the replacement for these DMC ‘s 929,933,222,614,303,357 ? I am working on a more than 50 years old pattern and I cannot find anything . Thank you so much :)

How can I substitute skim color? I would love to change a Santa face from a white Santa to a person of color (black). It’s just a face in a Christmas stocking kit.
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 2 года назад
Hi Marge! It depends on how many colours are currently in the Santa face (like if it's more than a couple, that's going to be really hard to get the tones all working well together). Here's a great article from Lord Libidan about good DMC colours for skin tones (and highlights and shadows of each), I hope this helps -- lordlibidan.com/find-the-perfect-skin-tone-dmc-threads/ 😊

Can I dye threads with fabric colour
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 3 года назад
Yes you can, but be careful to rinse them out very very well -- the last thing you want is to wash your project at the end and your floss leaches dye onto the fabric. 🙂

DMC Color Card is out of stock. Where can I purchase the card?
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 6 лет назад
Hi Mary! I know they were getting some more in, you could always email DMC, or try other retailers. If I'm not mistaken, chartingcreations.com might have some of the newer ones in stock. If not, Sew & So in the UK used to sell them, I'm not sure if they have the most recent one in stock or not. You could just ask your local retailer to order one in for you, ever since the 35 new colours came out they're in pretty high demand. 🙂

Can you help me switch this colors 957, 956, 3350 and 3685 to red tone ones.,
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 5 лет назад
Hi Maureen! I can't unfortunately -- there are probably 60-80 shades of reds/pinks/oranges that might work, it's all up to your personal taste and what will look good with the rest of the colours in your pattern (there are dark reds/orange reds/pink reds/blueish reds, etc). You can always look at colour charts online and see which colours might be good substitutions, but you won't get a really accurate idea unless you have access to the actual floss colours (either in a shop or with a real floss colour card like I'm using in the tutorial). Have fun choosing your colours! 🙂

You can purchase doc color booklet for floss on amazon or Herschners. Com
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 6 лет назад
Yes, there are lots of places to get them, you just have to make sure you're getting the newest version as they've been selling out everywhere. 🙂

They only have the printed ones and the one on Amazon is at least 3 times the price at DMC.
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 6 лет назад
Yeah, the floss ones can be expensive. I'd check Sew & So as well -- even though they're in the UK, they might have it, and their shipping and such was really reasonable. 🙂

Hi, I’m SOO🤗Glad UTube suggested you! I’m Really looking for Help to Switch my Gold Horses to Black Ones! I have my Riolis Horses in the sunset kit, & I’ve been doing it for my Dad, but how can I change the kits gold/yellow tones to a shiny looking black stallions? What Blacks are the Best to use? Need HELP 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 5 лет назад
Hi Abigail! I'm sorry but that would be basically impossible -- I'm assuming the horses have dozens of colours in them (various shades of gold, yellows, browns, creams, etc) -- trying to accurately swap every single colour out for an equivalent darker shade and not have it end up looking like hell in a handbasket is impossible. Even if I was the designer and using a gold horse as a model and then switching the colours one by one in my software, I couldn't do it, genuinely. What you see as black is a combination of pure black, greys, dark reds, dark blues, etc. So please don't try and change the colours of such a complicated pattern, you really will hate how it stitches up, you should only switch the colours if it's maybe 3-4 colours max you're switching out (like 3 or 4 colour numbers) as I describe in the video. Sorry about that! ❤

Peacock & Fig what black colors are the best to buy? Can you please tell me that🙏🏼 I don’t know the DMC black colors! What blacks, whites, or greys should I buy? Thanks
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 5 лет назад
I'm not sure what you want them for Abigail, there aren't any "good" colours. If you can get to a local needlework shop or craft shop that sells floss, just choose what you like. But don't try and replace the colours in the horses, it really won't work, it will come out totally crazy looking and very strange. Pure black in DMC is #310, pure white is BLANC, and bright white is B5200. Other than that, there are about 30-40 shades of greys, creams, and off whites, all with different tones (some greys are more neutral, some have a bit of a green or a mustard tint to them, some are warm toned or cool toned, etc). There are no "best" colours, it completely depends on what colours your project specifies to use. 🙂
