When lunging a horse, most people drive a horse's hindquarters away from them to change direction. In this video, I show how to draw a horse's thought towards the handler in order to secure a softer and stronger connection and calmer change of direction.
Check out the video on driving versus directing to understand the difference.

Interesting. I make the mistake of not moving my feet while turning and also of pulling. I love these videos that show us better ways. 😊

The "move your feet" comment reminds me just how many little details animals pick up in body language. I don't have a horse (yet) but I like think about how to use these gentle approaches when training my dogs. At one point I realized the idea of a "soft" or "hard" horse applies to dogs too and that I needed to work on building a calm, confident dog before teaching new behavior. Thanks for your videos!

Harry Whitney told me that driving is the last thing you use and the first thing you stop doing. We should direct rather than drive.

Always ask politely first by trying to direct the horse's thought and only back it up with driving when more clarity is required. The next tine you ask, direct the horse's thoughts first again. In that way directing becomes the norm and the need to drive dissipates.
