This video covers the basics of understanding contact in horse training.
I teach Good Horsemanship around the world helping people to understand the emotional and mental component of how horses operate to achieve both a willing partnership and bond and to maximize the performance potential of a horse.

"Contact is different for every horse." I love that you said that. So VERY TRUE. Keep the videos coming! Take care.

That’s the best explanation I heard on the right amount of rein contact. Your understanding of contact changed my mind on what contact should be so I guess your job is done. Thank you, legend😊.

Excellent explanation Ross. This was something I struggled with when trying to learn dressage years ago. It was soooo heavy😣Gave up and continued with learning horsemanship and a long journey later I think I do understand these concepts of contact with feel and balance and thoughts. Thankyou for putting these videos together, I'm always up for more learning while I'm still alive and able to ride lol!😜

You explain things so well! I have two questions... What does an inexperienced rider do to slow down and stop a horse that is running too fast for the rider, where the rider won't be shot forward in the saddle? Also, if it's not too personal..Who is Alice?

It's difficult to offer advice on circumstances that are theoretical because the best strategy will vary from horse to horse and situation to situation. My best piece of advice is to find the best professional help you can and have some hands-on instruction. However, in general in order to slow a horse that is leaving the scene and not listening to the feel of 2 reins to slow down, I would suggest try slowing the horse down by using ONLY the inside rein and gradually circle the horse in a diminishing spiral until the size of the circle is such that the horse chooses to slow down. Then release the inside rein and go on. It is important the spiraling is done slowly and smoothly so the horse can keep its balance - so cool heads need to prevail. Also the earlier you try to interrupt the running away, the better. I don't talk about Alice, but the closing is a tribute somebody very special. I hope you understand.

IMHO I wonder about a horse ridden by many riders-----myself I go from very lightest to more and more till I find right amount of contact
