One thing with outboards is that everything is packed in and sometimes hard to locate.
That is certainly the case with the fuel filters on this 2017 Honda BF150, Follow along as we show you where the filters are, and explain what this boat was doing, and why its important to change all the filters rather than just one.
This BF150 was surging and nearly stalling above 3000rpm, but this kind of problem could happen at any throttle range, 4000rpm if the filters were less clogged, 2000rpm if it was more clogged, ultimately it will only get worse, so if you aren't seeing the 5000rpm or 6000rpm or wherever your rated max rpm is without surging, its past time to change those filters!
The filters you'll likely want for your Honda, These definitely fit a 2017 BF150A but likely fit a pile of other models:
➡Primary filter (Suction side, inside plastic bowl Sierra #18-79909): amzn.to/3dv6J2y
➡Secondary filter (After lift pump, inside VST housing, Sierra #18-79908): amzn.to/3pCIMIG
You may be able to find cheaper filters from other brands, but those are the ones I recommend.
Most modern outboards use a similar arrangement for fuel filtration, some Yamaha and Mercury engines also have a small filter sock that sits on the bottom of the high pressure fuel pump and will cause similar running issues where it may idle fine and then hit a wall where it surges or has issues above a certain rpm and gets worse with more load.

Wow! What an excellent video. We had the same problem and we made exactly the opposite mistake. We changed the lower pressure filter but not the high pressure one. Going to get the parts now, will update you ASAP.

Great video. Do you need to put clamps on the fuel lines to keep fuel from coming out when removing the filters?
@trythistv
@trythistv 2 года назад
You're going to lose some fuel just from the act of removing filters and stuff, which isn't a bad thing because any water or other contaminants can get disposed of, but it may not hurt to clamp the line coming from the fuel tank just so it doesn't siphon out your whole tank, and of course be mindful to catch any gas you can from the filter housings, don't pollute!

mine idled fine and I could get to 2 grand no problem, ease to 2200 rpm and she starts to sputter, pull back on throttle and she would run decent again.. just put new filter in and put on muffs and quick rev to 4 k ... going out to the Big Lake this afternoon.. Jones to get on plane again.. think you helped me solve my problem.. THANKS!

Those filters are kind of stashed down in the cowl, and get overlooked quite frequently. I've heard of dealers that don't know where they are (This boat sat at one for quite some time because they couldn't figure it out), Glad the video helped you sort out your boat!

What about the fuel vapor filter tucked above these 2 filters, and under the intake manifol 5:02 d tubing? How do you replace that? Or do you ever need to?

Would the high pressure filter behind the metal plate cause rough idle and slight exhaust smoke x
@trythistv
@trythistv 3 года назад
Maybe, but I would suspect spark plugs before fuel filter with a rough idle, clogged fuel filters tend to give symptoms of surging or issues at higher rpm.

Did you use a screw driver to pry the suspension strap off the bracket? Looking at a h 60 fuel filter replacement.
@trythistv
@trythistv Год назад
If you're talking about the goofy rubber strap thingy that holds the filter housing, I may have, but be cautious you don't slip and either jab your hand or crack the plastic housing. I feel like I just wiggled and pulled with my hand, but I'm not sure.

Hello, It is perhaps not the main topic here but I'm a newbie and just got a honda bf75 from either 2017 or 2018, i was wondering if it has a water separator included in the engine already or do I need to buy and install an external one ? thanx.
@trythistv
@trythistv 2 месяца назад
From what I can see there isn't any real water separator on a df75 of that era, just a little inline fuel filter, so adding an external one might be a good call.

how do you remove the lower cowling? I need to do this on my new to me BF135. its a 2005 and the fuel filters have never been serviced
@trythistv
@trythistv 2 года назад
There are like 8 or 10 little bolts, I think they're 8mm head that are scattered about all over that connect the two halves of the lower cowl to eachother, I loosened them all, then just pulled the one side off, which is fine on a trailer, if you're working on a lift or in the water (we do a lot of mobile work), its a little precarious to be taking all that stuff off, I'd recommend trailering the boat and doing other essential maintenance like water impeller and lower unit oil while the boat is out of the water (unless you know when those were last done and they are OK for the season).

so in this video, you replaced 2 filters. Do you know which one actually solved the problem? or do you always replace both.
@trythistv
@trythistv 2 года назад
The problem filter in this case was the "primary" filter, the one in the little plastic bowl, right here: amzn.to/3dv6J2y, it certainly wouldn't hurt to do both, especially if you don't know if the high pressure "secondary" filter hasn't been done (the one in the VST housing, available here: amzn.to/3pCIMIG)

Do you have a link to the part numbers for these fuel filters.

I do indeed, it is stashed in the description, which has become harder and harder to find nowadays on here. Here it is again in easier to find format: The filters you'll likely want for your Honda, These definitely fit a 2017 BF150A but likely fit a pile of other models: Primary filter (Suction side, inside plastic bowl Sierra #18-79909): amzn.to/3dv6J2y Secondary filter (After lift pump, inside VST housing, Sierra #18-79908): amzn.to/3pCIMIG You may be able to find cheaper filters from other brands, but those are the ones I recommend.

Is that snow in the motor
@trythistv

It sure is. We fixed this one in December, Snow on the ground, Snow on the lake banks, I believe it was around 30 degrees (Fahrenheit) when we lake tested it (4:35 to the end)

does anyone know what the little spring do on the high pressure strainer? Mine is missing
@trythistv
@trythistv 2 года назад
I believe that spring is to hold the high pressure filter in place, if the spring is missing, the filter will just flop around in the housing and not be pressed against the rubber seal on the end of it
@alexeimaterov3226
@alexeimaterov3226 2 года назад
@@trythistv hmmm... wonder if that would create a restriction. Our BF135 is having similar issues, replaced all the filters, fuel pressure checks out at idle but can't go past 3k RPM. When we replaced the high side filter there was no spring.

It's a cheap way to ensure your engine is getting a good clean supply of fuel. Should be done regularly for sure!

150hp at 6000rpm and speed is 27mph. Ouch, must be a heavy boat.
@trythistv

I do believe it was a 26ft, and an absolutely gorgeous boat, had every option I'd get on a pontoon, power assist steering, power Bimini, the awesome woven style flooring that just washes dirt off without staining, it was great. Also entirely possibly the speedo was off, it was a pitot style rather than gps, it felt pretty quick for it's size, but most pontoons seem like they are meant for putting here and there until the last few years of hanging a 300hp engine behind every toon and such.
