In this video I finally get around to changing the transmission, rear end and hydraulic fluid on the ford 600. While converting the video I caught myself saying the the wrong type of gear oil. the original manual calls for for SAE 80, not 30 . My mistake. Anyway as it says on the can I am using 80 w 90 . Thanks for watching, and another power stroke video is coming soon !

Hey! Great video. Just changes the fluids in my 641 Workmaster. Same fill, check and drain areas. I did notice, you don’t have an air cleaner/oil bath. You really don’t want trash to gum up the carb and mess up the engine, especially when you’re bush hogging. Great video!

I have one of the exact model and all the fluids are brown. I seem to remember a while back dad or my uncle was talking about it being rebuild and some with the PTO. I think all the Trans - Hydraulic - Rear end are all using the same oil. When I drain it I will check. Ha mine smokes a good bit, but helps keep the bugs away when I'm out working on it. Spot on about the boot as I think is part of where this my water came from.
@SamofCR
@SamofCR 7 лет назад
No, they are not. Trans and rear end are 80W-90 high pressure and hydraulics is AW32 hydraulic oil. I get mine from NAPA.
@TraylorHead
@TraylorHead 7 лет назад
I should have updated. I put the correct hydraulic fluid in and it ran good. Now I have to rebuild the lift controls as there is not much of an in-between setting.

Awesome video, helpful. I have a 53 jubilie same size as this I lose oil pressure downhill drops to 0. But in level ground it's 20lb and 30lb uphill. Not sure if screen if screen is stopped up on oil drain plug or what. It concerns me. It's in really great shape don't wanna blow it up. I bought some oil SAE30. I check oil level regular. It's black and needs to be changed. No blowby or smoke from exhaust no loss of power stout tractor. Cencerned though.
@Dragracer64
@Dragracer64 6 лет назад
I would drop the pan and check for sludge, and clogged oil pickup screen.
@hunterstroupe1569
@hunterstroupe1569 6 лет назад
Dragracer64 that's what my guess was, maybe one side of the screen is stopped up. And it don't pickup going downhill. It's been doing it a while prob last 5 months. When I first bought the tractor it didnt do that. It stayed at around 20lb 25lb oil pressure. Around 40lb wide open. Which wasn't bad then it got to where it started doing this. It concerns me, last weekend I got on the tractor and went down steep grade and she knocked one time real loud. I don't wanna run it anymore until I atleast get some kinda pressure downhill.

ive found that a good way to clean the inside of the transmission would be to drain the fluid and run a mix of ATF automatic transmission fluid and kerosene , run it through all the gears and let it run for a while, then drain and replace with the regular clean hydraulic/transmission oil
@Dragracer64
@Dragracer64 9 лет назад
Probably should have done that. Good idea. I believe I got it cleaner than it was. Thanks for watching .

I just changed the steering column on my 640 that I just got and mistakenly thought it was the transmission below and it was the clutch but not before I poured two quarts of 90wt gear oil down the hole. Is there a way to drain it out, I see a plate underneath but it`s real close to the shifter and I don`t want to drain the transmission by mistake?

if you ever need parts for this tractor, or need a one wire alternator look at steiner tractor. They will even give you a kit to move the distributer and change to pointless ignition and a wire loom if you need to change the wiring to 12 volt.

After you cranked it up. I noticed before you opperated the rear lift you did something with the pto lever. Seems you ingaged it for a second then turned it back off. Is there a reason for this. I got a 801 and the lift dont work. I remember the 9 8 and 2 end had to have pto running to opperate the pump so i tried that but no different
@Dragracer64
@Dragracer64 3 года назад
I just checked to see the pto worked after the fluid change. The lift works without pto running.

+Anthony Newman Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.. I haven't priced one recently. Every now and then I look on e bay and craigs list, just to see whats out there. From what I see it looks like 3,500 is the average asking price for a decent running one .

I paid 4500 for my 661. It has a good front loader bucket. Runs great. Hydraulic leak but that’s expected for a tractor this old. I think I paid a little too much but again it runs great.

How do you prime the hydraulic pump?
@AnthonyBennettKY
@AnthonyBennettKY 6 лет назад
SamofCR Once you refill the hydraulics, leave the dipstick out and use compressed air via the dipstick hole (with tractor running at low idle) and operate the hydraulic lever up and down until it operates normally. Re-install dipstick.

You should consider putting some sealant on the fill plugs and drain plugs and stick and boot because of the rain getting in the transmission, the new boot will eventually begin to leak again through the stick opening. Did you consider cleaning the hydraulic filter screen? Your poor Ford looked like it has seen better days.
