Changing the Map of Europe Back to 1815

What did Europe look like in 1815? In this video we’ll redraw the map of Europe back to the year when Napoleon finally lost his grip on Europe, and when a new future was laid out at the Congress of Vienna.
NOTES
• When pronouncing originally non-English names, I've adhered to the American English pronunciation given by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
• The borders of some smaller German and Italian states have been simplified for hopefully obvious reasons.
• Hesse-Homburg did not join the German Confederation until 1817, but is nevertheless included here.
ERRATA
• Serbia was granted autonomy within the Ottoman Empire already in late 1815. The territory corresponded to the Smederevo Sanjak/Belgrade Pashalik region.
• The Kiurin khanate in the north Caucasus should be called 'Kurin'.
• The two (artificial) lakes in present-day Ukraine did not exist in 1815.

Europe in 1815: we won't have a major war in at least 100 years! Europe in 1914: we got so close...

Does Crimean War 1853-6 not count? At least it involved Russia, France, Turkey, Great Britain, Sardinia-Piedmont so quite a few of the Great Powers.
@rbfilms4752
@rbfilms4752 5 лет назад
Yeah it's really not true that there weren't any major conflicts in Europe for 100 years. The Crimean War and Franco-Prussian War were pretty damn defining, as were the oh so many different revolutions that happened in the 1820s, then again in 1848, then yet again in the 1860s/1870s. The reality is that there wasn't a "continent-spanning" war with a multi-million+ death toll like the Napoleonic Wars for 100 years. And in the history of Europe nothing like those wars had ever really happened to begin with. So the phrase is almost a non-sequitur, because the reality is that Napoleon fundamentally changed how wars would be fought.
@stevenpeay923
@stevenpeay923 5 лет назад
No, not many many people died and the war ALMOST never left the Crimean Peninsula. RB Films brought up the Franco-Prussian war, but is only involved France, Prussia, and some other German states. Still not many people dies like in the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, or the World Wars.
@rbfilms4752
@rbfilms4752 5 лет назад
Not as many people died (although it was still in the hundreds of thousands for both conflicts, which is no small number.) However, the political ramifications of the wars were still very huge in their times. It's a shame that they've been forgotten by the mainstream of history because they absolutely were important.

Imagine showing a modern map to someone back then! I'd love to know all the questions they'd ask. Obviously one of the main things is german reunification, but if they ask why Germany is so much smaller than the German Confederation, then you'd have to explain 2 World Wars. And Italian Reunification would be a big point too, I suppose. I don't know if the Ottomans were called the "sick man of Europe" back then, but if not you'd have to explain why they lost their whole empire. I think they'd be extremely shocked about Russia. Sure, maybe they'd understand an independent Poland and Finland, but there are so many more countries in eastern Europe now. One of the questions would probably be asking why Ireland exists without northern Ireland. I suppose Austria would also be shocking. I don't know if their empire was as unstable as Austria-Hungary, but if not then you'd have to explain a lot. Sometimes I wish historians had a time machine to go back and show this map to someone back then and find out all the questions they'd have to ask.

Dude what happened to Norway? They split up How did Russia get smaller? Well it was engulfed in a future ideology, then America which just got the White House burnt down, will become a great power, and it will fight against Russia, causing Russia to lose its territory. Wait why is Germany smaller? Well they reunited but then there were 2 giant wars, Germany lost them both How did the Ottomans get smaller? Wait why are they named Turkey now? It was because of the 1st giant war, which also caused Russia to be engulfed in the ideology.

@stojankovacic1524
@stojankovacic1524 5 лет назад
Timothy Wingates Yugoslavia was 80 years old and it was created because Croats and Slovenians wanted to join Serbia because they didn't have a government after WW1. People now miss Yugoslavia and it broke apart because parties like the Croatian Neo-nazi party aka HDZ and Serbian Neo-nazi party aka SRS. Nationalism and USA destroyed Yugoslavia, not that people really wanted it. Now we have a pretty much joke saying 'Now we know that many things they tought us about socialism were a lie but that everything they tought us about capitalism was true' I was saying that it couldn't have happened because of the already mentioned accords of Helsinki. Also who told you 'Serbia'? Tito was a Croat and Yugoslav motive was 'Bratstvo i jedinstvo!' which means 'Brotherhood and unity!'
@stojankovacic1524
@stojankovacic1524 5 лет назад
They did want it but now we deeply regret it... I'm from Bosnia and I can tell you, we are not progressing, we are degressing. Unemployment is among the highest in Europe, 27% which is about a quarter of the population, average salary is 400 euros, education is useless if you aren't moving away because the intelectual elite is the middle class while war profiters who exploited the times of war to rob their own country which they now rule are the high class... we are doomed. Now in Croatia they asked the people I think 3 years back and 88% of the people older than 45 (25+ years of living in Yugoslavia) wanted Yugoslavia back and the older they were (more expirience in Yugoslavia) the percentage was bigger. There was no testing in Serbia as far as I know but I would expect even more pro-Yugoslav results because the Croats were the ones that rebeled!

I knew about 90% of this history, but I was never able to visualize it...Your map presentation was fantastic, and clarified many of the things I wondered on how Europe was before WWI...Your presentation should be shown in world history classes...It would teach many students who thought that Germany and Italy were countries long before the 1800's...and show them that they were, in fact, very recent countries...

@shahadmoeen1290 5 лет назад
no, i’m Iraqi but since my country and its neighbors were under the Ottoman empire ruling due to invasion for centuries, at some point my people were even forced to learn Turkish and not speak Arabic anymore, i’m sure that’s very familiar historically, so that’s what i meant . when all my people were living in despair no one would ever think that this empire would end so unexpectedly and the map of today looking like that .
@shahadmoeen1290
@shahadmoeen1290 5 лет назад
Adem Turan you’re Turkish as you mentioned earlier so you should know your history well also i don’t think it’s morally possible to compare between the British and the ottomans because an invasion is still inhuman no matter who does it because innocent people are involved and history and legacy is being destroyed, however the ottoman invasion lasted longer therefore it’s harmful effects are more scarring than the others . The middle east has been dealing with conflict, war and destruction and stealing of our economical resources for uncountable amount of years and god know if it’ll ever have a peaceful era . Lastly i don’t think refugees leave there home land by choice they’re forced to after losing everything so no one appreciates calling them dumb, also you can’t deny that your Turkish government had a hand in the Syrian conflict .

Fun fact: After Napoleon was exiled the first time, he came back and was surrounded by a French Regiment. He then shouted "I am your Emperor! Who would shoot their Emperor?" The soldiers then joined forces with Napoleon and he rose to power again for 100 days (I think?)

Very well done! Obviously, there are some oversimplifications and inaccuracies; many of today's states were certainly more predictable than you say, and already existed long before 1815. But you manage to make the main point: there is nothing static or 'this-is-supposed-to-be-the-way-of-things' about almost any national border.

Wow. Superb essay. I'm going to watch it again. However, it would be better if the map had been panned slightly farther south (not much information at the top), and stretched a bit to the east, even at the expense of altering the aspect ratio (squeezing), if necessary.

I know is an old video but here are some fixed mistakes: Morocco, Spain and Portugal changed territories since 1815 Spain took some small territory close to Ceuta in Morocco in 1860 Africa War. Portugal and Spain had some micro-disputed territories normally called fresnos or contiendas, all this tiny gaps where finally fixed in 1926. And we can't forget of Couto Misto micronation.

An interesting map project would be to match all the different treaties and established borders and see which sections of national borders have lasted the longest and which territories have been under the control of their nations for the longest, even if as vassals or autonomies. As in which areas can politically be understood as being the areas they claim to be.
