Changing the pickguard, pickup covers and backplate of a Fender Stratocaster

In this video I change the pickguard/scratchplate, pickup covers, knobs and backplate of my early 00's Fender Stratocaster (Mexican).
It's an easy upgrade and can refresh your old, tired-looking axe.
Time required - about 30mins
Tools required - string tuner, string winder, crosshead (philips) screwdriver, polish, rag, new strings (optional), observer dog (optional).

Great vid. I was trying to switch out my pickguard on my strat style Hardluck Kings guitar. Realized the replacement wasn't the right size somehow. No big deal. The bid deal was that I was having major issues was that pickup covers weren't staying in place while trying to get it back together. Long story short I realized that somehow the spacers that go under the pickguard and between the p/u covers were gone. Maybe i lost them, maybe they were never there. But those springs/spacers are KEY. The simple act of just screwing the pieces back in to place so you didn't lose them was a good idea. Nice job! Guitar looks awesome.

Hey thanks for commenting! Yes, those little springs are key. Glad you liked my upgrades-it just goes to show that Strats last forever, are beautiful and are quite easy to maintain

This is a look that appeals to me. I often think about putting together an all-black Strat as I often find myself waking through the early hours of the morning and end up staying awake, lying in bed, for a couple of hours at a time. The only real differences that my fantasy black Strat has compared to yours is that mine has a large headstock and slightly darker fingerboard and also some gold hardware such as the jack socket and the screws for the pickguard in order to give a warmer vibe. BTW the wee Miniature Schnauzer featured here is very similar to one of my older brother's Mini Schauzers ... they are great characters !

Hey, thanks for the comment! Great idea about gold hardware-that would look amazing. And sort of in the style of one my favourite guitars, the Les Paul Black Beauty with three humbuckers. Gold hardware will be my next upgrade I think! Hope you don’t mind me stealing your idea. Good spot on the mini schnauzer-that’s Milo and he’s certainly got lots of character. He’s an ace dog

@@approximations6256 Another idea that I have is that I would call my Strat 'Panther' ! lol .My older brother ( the one with the Mini Schnauzers) owns a Mexican Strat which is gold with gold hardware and a scratchplate that looks like wood! which he is intending to change soon. I suggested that he try a tortoise shell scratchplate . BTW I also learned to play on a Les Paul Custom copy ( Hondo 2) and then when I started to play in a band I used a white Strat copy but I initially had to tape the volume control into a fixed position due to the fact that I couldn't help hitting the control due to it's close proximity to the high 'E' string !

what about the humbuckers ? cannot change that covers like that ?

i have a HSS and can i put 2 single coils pickup cover close to each other for the humbucker

"Good question" I'm wondering the same thing. I have the strat HSS too. I have not measured it however it looks like on the humbucking pickups one may be smaller than the other? so I'm not sure if the outer shells would fit both pickups on the humbucker coils . or maybe only change one of the covers on the humbucker. Might give it that zebra type look? If anyone has completed this please post.

Would the pick guard/knobs/pickup covers differ on a Mexican fender Stratocaster vs yours?

I’m not sure but I’d say you just need to count the numbers of screws on your strat and make sure your new pick guard has the same number of holes. Mine is a Mexican strat and the kit I bought worked out fine. Good luck and thanks for the comment
