Sophie Li, Co-Founder of SignHow, shares her story of what growing up with a disability was like, and how we have the ability to reach more people with technology to educate them on sign language. Sophie Li is one of the Co-Founders of SignHow, an online global dictionary that aims to host over 300 different sign languages. Born profoundly deaf to two world acclaimed ballet dancers, Li Cunxin, the author of Mao's Last Dancer and Mary McKendry, author of Mary's Last Dance, Sophie will share her story of what it is like growing up with a disability and how this affects her life, work and her future ambitions, especially when the world is going digital. She will also share how SignHow will solve lifelong challenges for deaf and hearing people, and you might catch her teaching useful signs in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to celebrate today's theme C.O.V.I.D! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What a wonderful contribution to the world! I saw Li dance in Oregon on the Houston Ballet tour in the 80s, and am reading his book. I learned basic ASL several years earlier, and decades later, sign the songs at our church. We don't have any deaf congregants, but folks going and old appreciate the visual interpretation!

Sign How? Wow. Eureka moment for me. Primary teacher, Auslan student (finished Cert 2), member of my Deaf community, heard your father Li speak years ago in Mackay, Queensland, read his book, and currently listening to your mother Mary's audio book, and a friend of mine (parent, Auslan Cert 2 student) has had mentoring with you. But it was realising that it was you behind Sign How that was my biggest realisation! Well done! Keep up the good work!
