To be honest, in many areas you were a lot more likely to see breakfillers around Christmas time in the early years - but the London area were pretty good at filling the breaks with ads from day one.

Very rare "love over gold" dire straits and dexy's midnight runners "too rye aye" adverts here! Phonogram who owned both vertigo (dire straits label) and mercury (dexy's midnight runners label) got two cheap 10 second adverts on the same break, probably cos channel 4 in the early days were desperate to get people to advertise on their channel due to companies being worried that no one was watching channel 4, because they were just too out there and alternative for the average viewer to stomach!
It turns out he owned a chain of liquor stores (called Barrett's Liquor Mart). He even had a go at a singing career and had a record released, apparently it was terrible, but I'm sure you could imagine that already
