nah, dude: the biggest fan was that weaboo dressed as naruto that made a video in his bedroom covered with anime waifus posters, sniffing a brand new copy of "kickassia"
It's so awesome that Doug is able to write great roles for black actors, such as: (1) nondescript African warlord; and (2) businessman who only ever talks about slavery and being black.
"Rob did an excellent job of keeping the white balance consistent" he says over a scene that is filmed shot/reverse shot in a single room where one character is bright yellow and the other is bright white
The funniest part abt that is that… that just goes without saying on a shoot… like white balance is the first thing u do and no one brings it up because it’s bare minimum. It’s like saying “and it was amazing they printed out enough scripts for EVERYONE!!!” Lmaooo

I don't think either of those will tell you EVERYTHING about the lore, but they're good places to start. @@squid1481 Yeah, pretty much the only characters who have a posh English accent, which is what it sounds like he's attempting, are the high elves. Humans usually have American or faux-Nordic accents.
One thing to keep in mind about the "commentary" videos is that the only monetary compensation the people in the "anniversary" films got from them was the ad revenue they got from those "commentary" videos. Doug didn't pay them to be in those films at all! (It's quite telling that one of the selling points of the Atop the Fourth Wall Movie's Indiegogo campaign was that all the cast and crew would be paid.) So if the creators sound bored or say repetitive or inane things it's because they're not making those commentary videos because they have something to say but rather because they needed to make them to get any kind of money back to compensate them for the large amounts of time they put into making the films.
@Skamacho It's current year, if you're not inserting your far left politics into everything how else are we supposed to know what a virtuous person you are?
@Skamacho Trump wasn't president any more when that comment was written. There are known cases of him pre-presidency screwing people out of paychecks because he knows they can't afford to legally contest him, such as when he contracted his golf club in Scotland. The man is a demonstrable thief. That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact he was ever president. Stop assuming every mention of him is political. (Or is this a veiled attempt to insert YOUR politics into something while projecting about it?)
I'm surprised no one has mentioned how Channel Awesome's views have dropped almost 70% in the span of a year after Nostalgia Critic's awful review of the Wall, they're in the red and probably will stay like that forever.
@@videogamenostalgia It might've just been the one that opened a lot of people's eyes bc it was about a well loved music album It's basically Doug shooting himself in his own weird rubber face
@@Gemidori There is a base out there that think that Pink Floyd are quite overrated. I hate Channel Awesome but I'm apart of that base. I think The Wall is pretentious and a bit goofy. I've spoken to other people and friends who are more classic rock fans than I am and they feel the same. I get backlash about it all the time, too and I understand but I don't see what other people see in the band. But I'm also not a fan of The Beatles, either so I'm a bit weird.
Talking about Channel Awesome has become one of the most fascinating micro-genres on RU-vid. It really cannot be underestimated just how early and expansive that website was, and how tragic it all turned out to be in the end.
It’s sad. So many of the talent either quite or moved on partially because of all the weirdness that happened. Out of them all only a few managed to get long lasting careers. Mostly Lindsay Ellis who is now a successful RU-vid essayist/critic and author and angry joe who’s successful game commentator/critic and has been involved with lots of successful projects. The thing with both of these people is a regular person would not even know that they were connected with channel awesome.
Channel Awesome as a company, with no exaggeration, is a cautionary tale. They used to be a big deal back in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s after AVGN. Little did we know how messed up things were behind the scenes.
“you’re in the cast it’s not your department to talk about this” cute of you to think they have departments on productions like this and not just everyone scrambling
In Spoony defense, didn't he say he had to record, and write somee of the film as well...I am sure shot as well, just because they were "cast" doesn't mean they aren't RU-vidrs and Filmmakers and don't know what FStops and Overexposing a scene is...
Spoony was probably being diplomatic, but really Doug and Rob are extremely bad filmmakers in almost every way, like almost literally any other person in the TGWTG movies would be better, a good chunk of them are more qualified, and a few of them are MUCH more qualified, Spoony included. Since Spoony is pretty experienced with film equipment, he was probably correcting Doug and Rob's mistakes all the time.
I went to college with Uncle Yo. He was in the anime club and while we were trying to watch anime movies/shows he would get up and do his act along with them. Like miming stuff along with it. Cringe. It's really weird to see him doing RU-vid stuff with these jerks but not surprising.
I think its been removed from the internet, but there was a To Boldly Flee commentary by Brad Jones, Phelous and Obscurus Lupa, which was pretty scathing of the film, particularly the way it was made, and none of them really tried to make an argument for it actually being any good. It was pretty awesome.
The only thing that saves me from the total and utter shame of having watched Channel Awesome so much is the fact that Lindsay Ellis is actually amazing, full stop. And even her early Nostalgia Chick videos had some of that magic and potential.
Every single second Spoony was talking about the controversy I was begging him to stop. He was brought in to pretend to care about some trash film and he spends what must be 20 straight minutes of it talking about himself. Just shut up.
It's baffling to think there was ever a time in which we all though Channel Awesome was this home to all these amicable partners who loved working together and that Doug Walker was their benevolent leader. Looking back, Doug has always showed open contention for anyone he works with and will openly rag and ridicule anyone for doing an acting job on par with his own, yet do that to him and he'll immediately go into defense mode. I'm not sure how we ever thought different of him but I'm glad that the Change the Channel movement has really shed light on something we all should have seen a long time ago... also what the hell is with Doug's obsession with rape jokes?
@@videogamenostalgia yeah. Back in that period, internet content had edginess as a sales point. Poor quality, bad animation, bad sound, but you could get, for better or worse, what you could not get in TV or at the cinema in terms of vulgarity.

Down the Rabbit Hole's job is going to be so much easier if he contacts Ralph if/when they do a channel awesome video. Ralph clearly is invested in the lore.
It's incredible how the production and filming quality have not improved *AT ALL* since Doug Walker started his show. *AT ALL* It takes a "special" kind of person to never improve.
Ultimately why I stopped watching. I don't understand how you criticize films for all the same sins you commit in your own reviews of said films. The entire thing is super hypocritical and ironic
Spoony had a complete mental breakdown. I also hate him bringing up bipolar as an excuse for every single fuckin thing he does: I'm bipolar, and I hate seeing people use it like that, because it makes people think everyone with bipolar disorder is some walking fucking disaster, because it gets used as an excuse for every bad decision someone makes, which just makes any normal person think that those who are bipolar just constantly make shit decisions and have constant mental breaks with reality. Just to state the obvious: most of us are not like this.
That, and all the other five million ailments he's apparently suffering from. And if it's not any one of those it's him not being able to get over his shitty relationship ending. It's pathetic.
I gotta say, even if it's a bit off topic I understand what you mean; as someone whose actually autistic I've seen a lot of people who claim they're also autistic as an excuse for when they act wrong, and it tires me out a lot as well.
I met Uncle Yo at a convention one year and he said that Doug couldn't remember his lines, so he had to read cue cards off camera despite the fact he wrote the short. I don't know if that's brought up in this video or not.
How do you forget your own script? When I wrote speeches or designed homebrew adventures, I had an outline to follow. I also still am able to remember a bunch of lines years later, and at the time I didn't need the notes I wrote for myself.
@@josephleisses3997 Actually, to be fair, I forgot a key point. It could be he wrote the short with his brother and, if you watch behind the scenes of Nostalgia Critic videos, his scripts are structured horribly in that they have no structure, so they look like walls of words. With that said, if he was truly passionate about making these specials as he claims to be, you'd think he would take his time to memorize the script.
@@trollskullkid69 Also is probably a side effect of writing so many vignettes and weekly shows. It'd be hard to keep track of them after a while. Combine that with what you said (the poor organization skills), and I can see that more.

No lie, the Greek Tragedy that has unfortunately become the story and career of Spoony was a big factor into me taking the steps to begin taking my own mental health seriously. Watching this ambitious, genuinely talented creative lose his support systems and gradually regress into his worst qualities over the past half-decade (or even more, depending on where you make the mark of Noah's fall from grace) played a big role in me taking a step back and recognizing, in periods of stress, I can absolutely let my anxiety and depression take hold of me and turn me into my worst self. I mean, geez, I don't want to turn out like Noah did once I reach 39.
Right there with you, dude. As bad as 2020 was, 2018 was my rock bottom, and seeing that Spoony documentary shook me back to life. As a content creator myself who has autism and the depression that comes with it, I could easily see myself heading down the same path as Spoony, and I made a proactive effort to avoid a flame out. I'm happy to hear you've got your mental health back in check too.
He often complained of physical health issues as well, I remember him talking about his heart very often and how he would get weird fainting spells, I think he also mentioned some strange infections later on or something like that.
I had an extremely hard time understanding what was going on. I felt like this video and context of the video got very meta. Plus I’m currently tripping on mushrooms so who knows what’s really going in my head at the moment.
BRO I watched a bunch of channel awesome on mushrooms a couple years back, i had never watched them before only commentary vids about how much they suck, and it honestly felt like watching another dimension. Doug’s face kept morphing into that skinny orc from lord of the rings or a goblin or something, I had to turn that shit off, it felt like he could see me through the screen shit was weird man
You have to consider the kind of mental strain that would inflict upon someone. What you're describing could be considered a form of torture even the CIA would frown upon. I feel physically ill just from watching the clips.
Man, today I officially got a girlfriend, my covid test was negative, I might actually have a chance to enter medical school and Ralph uploads a new video. Today was a good day.
when I saw the "Spoony Commentary" in the title I thought for sure Ralph got a interview with Spoony to talk about all the crap that happened behind the scenes
Channel Awesome is what happens when you give drama nerds with zero self awareness too much validation and an outlet to display their cringe fan projects where they can ignore the people telling them to stop for their own good
19:36 Obsessed with the reaction of “Awh nice!” In response to Spoony mentioning the dude’s pink converse for absolutely no foreseeable reason at all. Ralph looked so pained and confused at the completely random off topic shit being said.
Why can’t it be like the other short films and just parody these sappy documentaries, my god a documentary about birds being filled with plastic was acting less sad than that part
Ralph, of course we love it when you put out content, but don't forget: You don't HAVE to do it at all costs. We need you healthy and in a stable mental state, so please don't do this to you on a regular base. Scientists have proven, that watching Channel Awesome kills more braincells than being punched in the head by Mike Tyson.
It's sad because I can imagine some of these plots actually being good if someone else had them as ideas. Dragon Bored, for example: the protagonist is complacent, timid, and bored with his overall life, until a character from a fantasy video game come to life. The fantasy character displays confusing acts with comedic effect, but ultimately and purely incidentally displays to the protagonist what standing up for yourself or taking chances can do for you, like finding love or getting a promotion. Instead it's Skyrim references and no real message or anything like that.
The reason that skit seems like it has potential is because it's mostly ripped off from a Doctor Who episode about the Doctor living with a roommate, who is bored with his life, job, and relationship. The basic idea is used in several films, Trading Places being one variation.
It’s poisoned because Doug has this weird warped idea that comedy isn’t funny unless someone is suffering so of course it has to be about a guy getting cucked and having his life ruined instead of interesting fish out of water scenarios.
It’s sort of like when a group of kids have to wait for that one kid of the group to stop talking about how he can’t be hurt because he is using this super magical shield.
CA is one of those “weird sides of the internet” to me. They put untold thousands of hours worth of work into these projects that end up looking SO amateur and cringey. Doug is a guy who’s just inherently unfunny...a black hole of charisma. The people he surrounds himself with are awful actors with no sense of comedic timing or delivery. Am I a funny, charming person? No! That’s why I stay THE FUCK away from comedy. They’re the same way but it’s like they refuse to admit it. They just keep pumping these abortional nightmares onto the internet for god knows who...I can’t even imagine the kind of blithering maniac who watches this shite at length for entertainment.
Every person on that channel thinks they're Bill Murray, they won't take any criticism on anything and believe they're the funniest guys on the Internet.
Everyone can be kinda funny in different environments: some are naturally born to be entertaining for wide crowds, some are better in controlled environments with people they're comfortable with. Some, of course, aren't interested in comedy, or aren't that good at it, but that's also fine. Dough isn't funny. At all. But he's trying a very particular type of funny that's particularly difficult to make, and he somehow looks even worse that way...
Dougs narcissistic ego has never sat well with me. From how he quit his job, to the near godlike status he and his cronies portray him to be has always been a gut wrenching...thing...to me. Ive completely blocked this man from showing up anywhere on my YT as well as a few others from CA. From Brad to Angry Joe, the content and "jokes" are simply not good and the skits are a pain to view. RTMM is simply gold in how he tears these ego-blasted titans to shreds. God we need more of this shit, RALPH!
I never followed channel awesome but the whole *aiming for more than the nostalgia critic / Linkara / whateverelse reviews* thing was a huge mistake. They had decent success with simple YT videos, then got carried away by that and blasted out garbage like pop quiz hotshots.
I wonder if he's the reason why all of these amateur reviewers try to have skits in their videos, because he's had skit-heavy videos that actually worked.
@@WittyOriginalUsername A lot of the cut material was Ralph being mean to Spoony (e.g. reacting with prolonged visceral disgust to Spoony's shirtless body in that one scene of To Boldly Flee), so maybe Ralph was reminded of how severely depressed and unstable Spoony is these days and decided he probably wasn't a good target for that sort of commentary?
And it sucks because his videos showed that potential. The Ultima series, final fantasy 10 and 13, hell, even the smaller videos like his original let's plays of phantasmagoria, and even stuff like heroes of the Lance or the ring terror's realm. That stuff was great. The black hole of board games was perhaps my favorite part of it all. And it sucks that he threw it away. In a time where these original comedians are slowly starting to come back, especially ones like The irate gamer actually getting the crowd that he wanted in the first place, it's a shame he doesn't try.
When Film Brain, Todd in the Shadows, Phelous, and Loopa and several others left Channel Awesome, they started doing their best work. If anything, Channel Awesome was holding them back. Maybe they got some exposure using that website, but given the stuff afterwards they've done has nothing to do with those years and they still are around today means people liked their content as opposed to the shared reviewerverse they were a part of.
Yeah FilmBrain is probably the only one I actually know and like in that entire crew. Ralph calling him “annoying” in the last video felt a bit out of left field, but I guess everyone in these dumpster fires come off as annoying
@@Archeopteryxman421 The one designed explicitly as 'Nostalgia Critic for chicks' broke off and became the most successful. Sometimes the universe is okay.

It was, it seems the later bit where Spoony was discussing his controversy was cut out later. Perhaps RU-vid’s algorithm didn’t like the mention of “rape jokes,” etc, so Ralph just cut it out after release.
It was - they cut out a lot of stuff with Spoony towards the end. Maybe it was causing issues with the monetisation? Or maybe Ralph felt retroactively that ragging hard on a guy who these days is highly unstable and clearly has severe mental health issues might have more severe consequences?

"Dragonbored" is very reminiscent of a short story I read in the 1990s where a book character - a Conan type barbarian - comes to his creator in real live. The writer decided to kill him off, so he comes "to meet his maker". The book character turns the writer's life upside down, bonds with the writer's girlfriend and even gets the chance of getting a job as a writer himself. In the final act of the story the writer decides to take the opposite route and writes himself into a fictional story (he disappears into the pages of a book, so to speak). The former book character decides to continue writing this story. I must still have this story somewhere.
