You've obviously never heard Victoria de los Angeles sing them. But the winner of the Canteloube sweepstakes is, hands down, Netania Davrath.

@@hrh2842 I have heard many recordings of this work, I used to own a classical CD outlet in the UK. Yes, I do know the de Los Angeles version, and yes that too is a lovely recording, but Moffo has the richer, fuller voice that I prefer, plus Stokowski wonderful conducting. A winner.

@@mrrkdino Agreed. I think Moffo also acknowledged that this performance was her favorite among all her recordings. Re: the somewhat churlish comment by H R H, to which you responded with great tact, it's true that Netania Davrath's famous recording is very beautiful, but the vocal aesthetic conveys (aptly) an image of rustic life, whereas Moffo's recording captures a slightly different middle ground between the rustic character of the melodies and Canteloube's well-schooled and complex orchestration. Other posts on this page insist that the rustic character should trump all other considerations. I disagree. Without for a moment devaluing the virtues of the Devrath recording, I would still maintain that the sheer and inimitable voluptuousness of Moffo's singing in this recording make for an invaluable musical experience. The Devrath recording is more complete, of course, but it's the Moffo sampler that I keep returning to when I want to listen to this music. Her pinnacle performance of Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" is also on the Stokowski album--an added enticement.
