It's both a fielder's choice and an error. The only reason an error was assessed is because the throw allowed another runner to advance (score.) If the first baseman had managed to catch the ball even if not getting an out at first and the game remained tied, or if for some reason the runner on third did not advance, no error would have been assessed. It would have just simply been a fielder's choice for Olivares, lowering his batting avg., but giving him and RBI. It does still go as a fielder's choice against Olivares, and he still gets credit for an RBI for the first run scored, but the second run scored is an E-6.

Pittsburgh started hot last year took and fell off after injuries. Question is do they have the depth to handle injuries cause every team has them. It's not a question on if they will have them its when will they.

@@toddster2721 Imagine if that was game 7 of the WS... baseball has made some strides at least to be modern, but they're still moving too slowly. They need to get a salary cap system and stop these large market teams from essentially forcing the smaller markets to rebuild every few years.

@@bub6010 I'm not taking the Pirates to win the division after starting the year 8-2 while playing teams with a combined record of 9-19. Miami lost their first 9 games of the season, Washington is, well Washington and Baltimore is playing .500 baseball.

Yea that was a rlly tough stretch as a pirates fan and this might be the most optimistic I’ve been in my life time of watching pirates games(I’ve only been alive for 14 years) and this team has a bright future ahead

The throw going past 1B is what made the game over. If he hadn't beat the runner, but made a catchable throw, the game would just be tied.

@@toddschmersal798 You're assuming they wouldn't have sent the second runner. He had to chose between getting the 3rd out at home or at 1st. Otherwise the 2nd runner can go. Perhaps going to home would have been the "better" throw, but I don't know where the runner was at that point, where he was at that point, and I'm sure he felt like he needed to end the inning. But my guess was that when he through it he felt that to keep the tying and losing run from counting he needed to end the inning. So he forced it.

@@StillProtesting That's exactly the point. Without the runner to 1st hustling, guy wouldn't have had to rush his throw. Much greater chance that's it's accurate. BTW, there's no guarantee that the runner didn't beat the throw. In the replay, it looks awfully close. If you don't like the Os, fine, but don't sit here with hindsight as if you would've done better.
