In this video I build a random/chaotic pattern cutting board from various hardwood off cuts I had in my Workshop. It was almost ruined!

It’s a nice board. Those diagonal cuts make it look interesting, but waste more wood than the square ones. Have you tried fitting the uneven piece cut from one edge onto the opposite edge? It might work, particularly if you used a void-filling glue like epoxy, and it appeals to my frugality.

Nice board, a man shows his mistakes! Very easy to do that on end grain. I'd suggest masking taping around the epoxy infills???

Really nice! I’m in Waterford too, I glued some timber down in my freezing shed recently and the glue dried chalky and failed. The bottle said below 10 degrees isn’t recommended. Until it gets a bit warmer I’m bringing my glue-ups up to the house. I wonder if that’s how your glued piece came apart. Great video as usual!

Looks great mate. Be careful cutting on it though. Resin is never a good idea in cutting boards as it can flake off under the knife blade and you’ll get tiny shards of plastic in your food. Also will show scratches a lot more than wood will. Just keep it in mind when using it!

Is there a better way to repair voids than epoxy resin? I've always used that, but if there is a safer way, I'm all ears.

@@jonh142881 not that I’ve come across. I’ll sell boards with resin in them as serving boards for that reason.

John great board. The guys on RU-vid charge over $300 for these and given the amount of work that has gone into this I can see why. How much do you worry about the hardwood species you include in your boards. I notice that the offcut parcel and oak and mahogany neither of which are recommended for cutting boards (at least that’s what I have been told). Keep them coming. John G

This will mostly be for dry use with bread and the like so a long as I keep it oiled and treated with natural bees wax it will be fine.

Thank You, John, that was an interesting way to make a cutting board. The tips were very useful. The one thing I would inquire about when I started working with wood, one of the rules of making cutting board I was told was never to use an open grain wood, it was said that germs and bacteria would be able to hide in the pores and that the tannins in oak would also have some sort of issue. I assume for incidental dry usage you could probably get away with almost anything, I know that you used some sort of food-safe finish which would include commonly include oil or shellac so I assume it was incidental exposure decorative board. As such I have never used oak or ash and mostly finished my boards in oil and then wax. I figured it was fine for the butcher's shop it was ok for my kitchen. You did not mention it and it is certainly a great-looking display piece. What are your thoughts ? Do you know of any additional guidelines? Thanks again
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed Год назад
This will mostly be for dry usage bread and the like, so not really an issue and I will keep it treated with a natural bees wax. I do see a lot of people using purple heart in cutting boards but that contain toxins so best to avoid.
