This one is for all the unbelievers out there. Great footage. Wonderful playing. Segovia is actually trying to help and they both are getting on very well. Thank you for posting this.

I truly believe that if Segovia would have been 10 or 20 years younger at this time the whole thing would have turned out differently. Michael was and is just incredible. Segovia was in his 90's (and not playing anymore...) and passed a year later.

A beautiful litle piece and so touching and moving to see the old master enjoying himself near the end.

I believe that Mr. Chapdelaine was amazingly composed and teachable to return and perfrom so well after the Mallorca incident. He had great dignity and poise. Others have criticized Segovia for his treatment of Mallorca, but I believe that as Chapdelaien was using Segovia's edition of the piece, Segovia expected Segovia's fingerings. Aside from some basic interpretation, the master might have found it difficult to impart anything without being able to see Chapdelaine's fingerings on paper IMO

Segovia remains the only guitarist I've seen live who took such inordinate time, care and pains to deliver a thoughtful and tonally exquisite performance. Maybe we could all just slow down a bit and think more about the sound, rather than the playing.
@tuxedomoon
@tuxedomoon 16 лет назад
we must all critisize ourselves for the bad taste guitarists that they exist out there,noone has a sound of his own they are all clones unfortunately.Segovia tried to teach his style becasue he sensed that time have changed .We are talking about tecnhique,ok try to have the segovia rich sound together with good technique it is impossible.

I saw Segovia two times when I was in college. He would walk out, sit down and play several pieces, Then he would say thank you and get up and go back stage for a break. He would then return and play some more. When he had played enough he would stand up say Thank You and walk off behind the curtains. He probably spoke ten words in two hours. It was boring as hell but college kids felt it necessary to have seen him at least once in those days.

No, you must be wrong about judging "one musician as the best". Musical appreciation is subjective. You cannot overrule someone's tears flowing upon hearing a piece but then being unmoved by another artist. At that point in the appreciation of music "better" is a worthless, even meaningless concept. No one can even logically be "the best" - as there are always aspects of playing or qualities that one can do better than another. So it cannot be "absolute" and decided by musical committee.

Rest in Peace, Michael Chapdelaine. You have inspired many with your dedication to the guitar, your exploration to break out of the mold - and your story from this historic masterclass.

i know! he suported franco the bastard! i think chapdelaine is great n if segovia didnt like his playing or fingering well tough. many have surpassed him in all aspects of playing (including interpretation!) he was, WAS a great. there are many many others who aren't so venomous!
@DiCelloPiano

Chapdelanie's interpretation is better , in my opinion, then Segovia for this piece - I went searching for Segovia's version of this piece , and Chapdelanie brings the melody out WAY better ...Bravo !

Better learn the segovia style rather thatn the todays uncaracteristic cold style of all the guitarists.Great guitarists=Segovia,Bream,Lagoya,Pepe Romero when you hear them you understand who is playing even if you dont see them ,that is guitar ,today 's playing reminds nothing of a guitar sound ,unfortunately .

Well Segovia called Barrios a peasant. He also called Villa-Lobos' Etudes the worst pieces he's ever heard, so I guess he was rather deaf in the heart :)

You must be kidding. There is a video here in which Segovia appears saying that Villa lobos etudes are wonderful,, although he only recorded (and probably played) three of them.

I understand ,some people today say that Sviatoslav Richter wasnt good either,new ideas again new people so what we throw the old ones to the garbage.No Segovia was the best,this is the opinion of the most people professional musicians not guitarists and that what counts really
@Xochiyolotl
@Xochiyolotl 16 лет назад
I agree. Lots of guitarists coming out today sound very dry and their playing lacks character. Technically, they are very good but they don't seem to have the sensitivity you find in the older masters. Probably has to do with their being closer to the romantic school. You see the same thing in violin. Nobody plays like Heifetz anymore.

He may've brought the guitar to heights heretofore unknown but I wouldn't say he was the father of the instrument. Too many great ones came before him for that, Sanz, Murcia, Sor, Giuliani, Carulli, Tárrega, & Llobet to name a few players/composers. He would absolutely not've been able to do any of his concertizing w/o the work of Antonio De Torres called father of the modern classical guitar. He was a giant standing on the shoulders of other giants. I agree w/ your age comment though.

@wassuppaska
@wassuppaska 14 лет назад
@potrodsas You need to clarify statements like that. What exactly is the classical guitar repertoire looking for? What exactly is the difference between cheap and "true" romanticism? What exactly is true artistic sense and how does JW not have it?

Segovia has no other thought than the way a piece of music ought to sound and he will critize anyone who fails to measure up. Segovia's playing is as flawlwess as his instruction.

Sometimes its the best way to learn, i was pretty cocky as a young lad,at my first lesson at SR music school so i played some Allans holdsworth and then my teacher turns around a music stand and tells me to play it, so i do, he says play it again as i get my hands in position he says "STOP, why do you have you hands like that" so i said "dunno" and then he lists everything i did wrong when i first played it even petty things (bitting my lip), sure i was a little insulted but i learnt alot.

Yes, the recording is missing some important frequencies and wobbles a bit. You have to account for this. The audio, at the point of this youtube video, is very poor and makes the guitar sound odd.

He was of my great-grandfather's generation. Every old man I ever knew from that generation was erassible, ballsy and very set in their opinions. Segovia had a firm idea of what he wanted to hear and demanded it of those he taught. What some call narrow-minded, I call specialized. He never branched out. He did one thing and one thing only and did it very very very well. Salud, paz y buen día.

the whole reason to play in a master class is to learn.If do not want the weaknesses in your playing exposed,or even experience some humiliation don't play in a master class.regardless of the master's attitude who ever it is.If you do not have any problems why are playing in master class anyway? this is the nature of the master class like it or not.

But the Maestro's sound has more depth and it sounds bigger and louder. I saw him live in Firenze playing the Chaconne and and the sound was like BOOM! Chapedelaine and Parkening may have better technique but its difficult to agree with you that they are neccesarily better than the Masestro.

Nobody can play like segovia.Segovia was the true inheritant of the meditarrenean style guitar he combined the magic sound of the cantabile amateur guitarist of a tavern with an unbelievable technique and talent ,musicians like him born every 200 years,guitar is very poor since the death of Andres Segovia ,when he played if even it was Bach you always hear something different and beautiful,he was like a great painter of the past ,too bad some people cannot understand that ,he was so different
@tuxedomoon
@tuxedomoon 14 лет назад
Chapdelaine better than Segovia.This is the joke of the year,noone played better Segovia and noone will play like him untill another 200 years passes. He was the favorite of Lagoya and Bream and he was the greatest in the romantic area playing ,i think many people do not understand his playing or they hear just to his old recordings after 1970
