Did you watch Kyle Kallghren's video on it? It's very interesting, stating that the movie is secretly about silent films turning into speaking movies and that that is what the speech actually refers to.
It's because it didn't sound "american", the speech resemblenced socialism, USA are capitalists and those kind of speeches goes against their interests.

Its kinda sad how there's an entire generation that will grow up knowing him only as Tony Stark. And dont get me wrong, he does a brilliant job in the MCU, but he also had such a rich and accomplished career before that
Yeah exactly, I love him as Tony Stark but there are so many people that think he only acts in superhero movies not knowing his roles in other great stuff
RDJ wasn't having a rich and accomplished career, after Chaplin, he became a drug addict and also went to jail which completely ruined his PR. MCU with it's Iron-Man (2008) revived and boosted the career of RDJ.
One argument I do have with the biopic is that I wish they'd focus more on his genius with his art and less about his sex life. Other than that, "Chaplin" is one of my favorite movies. RDJ was brilliant.
Well Charles did like the ladies and he did have a lot of them Feline...and so I guess one do a story about his life if they were not included. I didn't think it overly focussed on his sexual pursuits but it was one of the reasons Hoover made for his expulsion...The Tramp...you know?
They should have either focused more on the making of his films and his genius, or his personal life. Instead of trying to cram everything in, made it less interesting.

Chaplin (1992) is one of my most favourite movies. my most favourite scene in that movie is the intro itself.. when Charlie ( played by Robert Downey Jr ) enters his make up room through his black and white silhouette, sits on his chair and removes his make up slowly. the transition from black and white to color is made gradually as the progress of removal of make up and dress occurs.. from a comedy star to more serious side of his life is shown. hats off

the movie is over two decades old. it's also outstanding. it's not hard to find. in fact, i knew it was on netflix last month. it might still be there.
I actually liked this movie. Robert Downey Jr did an excellent job potraying Charlie Chaplin both on and off screen. The makeup artists did a fantastic job on aging him to a man in his eighties by the end of the film. The young actors who played Charlie as a five year old and a teenager were good too. The thing that blew my mind however was that his mother was played by his daughter Geraldine!
The 1992 version has RDJ saying "Comrades!" in place of "Soldiers!" when the tomato was thrown. I assume the writers changed it to convey the sentiment of McCarthy's HUAC (House of Un-Amerivan Activities) blacklisting Chaplin, but it only falls flat by puzzling the audience and desecrating Chaplin's original humanitarian speech.
@@colliric I think he is refering to the part where he says "Comrades, let us fight for a new world". If you listen to both speeches individually you will notice Chaplin doesn't say the word "Comrades", but RDJ does.
I agree, the movie continuosly lies in order to add cheap drama to the plot. The Great Dictator was actually very well recieved by the audiences in America and around the world. Just not in the Axis, where it was banned for obvious reasons. It is true that the FBI tried to frame Chaplin for anti-american speech, but they used Monsieur Verdoux for that, not the Great Dictator.

Last year, in London, I went to Lambeth/Kensington, to look for Chaplins childhood home. Indeed, there was a plaque on the wall...I expected a museum or something, but it was just some guy living there. I asked if many tourists pay a visit and he denied that.
Watched Chaplin 1992 for the first time. Had no idea the Great Dictator was so ill received and many Americans slow realization how terrible fascism and the Nazi party was.
It was not ill recieved though. The movie "Chaplin" (1992) unfortunetely sacrificed the truth to add drama to the script. In reality "The Great Dictator" (1940) was very well recieved by the public and by the critics, even being one of the highest grossing movies of that year. It wasn't labeled as "communist" or as "anti american propaganda" as the 1992 movie suggests. We have to remember that by 1940 the war had already started, and criticizing Hitler was perfectly acceptable to most of the american public. Chaplin's movie that sparked controvesies was actually Monseur Verdoux, not The Great Dictator.

I honestly never took Chaplin's speech to be anything but a very beautiful, peace-filled EFF YOU to Adolf Hitler. Really. Rumour has it, it really infuriated Adolf Hitler.
Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic playing Chaplin. He should have gotten an Oscar for it. America should be ashamed of what they did to Charlie, ..especially that pervert Hoover.
I spent a 40+ years as a history buff Mostly WW2....Chaplin summed it up while living in it as it happened ...American investor rebound from 1929 And the oil tycoons started the war with Japan ...Someone once stated if i sold medical supplies and guns i would be poor unless i found a demand ...Ask why America did not enter the war while Canadians at the USA/Canadian border hopped on trains and ships fighting right from 1939 ..Canadians knew if England fell Canada was next..America was making money
My only thing against this as a whole is how in the speech, Charlie started off soft and then grew with passion while RDJ started strong and stayed strong. Still a pretty good performance

Because the producers of the Chaplin movie (1992) wanted the plot of the movie to be more dramatic. In real life the movie The Great Dictator was very well recieved by the audiences.
I think a young Steve Martin looks closer to chaplin than Robert Downey JR. But he is a great actor and did pretty well from what I got from this clips.
I have not seen this movie in a while. I saw it in the movies and a couple of years later on cable. I loved it and thought Downey did a terrific job and should have won Best Actor. That being said, after viewing these clips, I have been reminded of some errors. Of course, there needs to be some level of poetic license when making a dramatization of someone’s life, since no one knows exactly what was said or was done, perhaps not even if the subject is still alive and is asked to recall details from perhaps 40 or 50 years earlier. There are, however, well documented facts, and available to see on film. THE ADVENTURER was made at Mutual, where Chaplin was the director. Showing it being made with Ackroyd as Sennett as the director, implying that it was made at Keystone as well, is innaccurate and rewriting history. This is similar to an error in the STAN & OLLIE movie. Babe Hardy met his future wife Lucille while making THE FLYING DEUCES in1939, not while making WAY OUT WEST in 1936. Yes, it was filmed in 1936 but not released until 1937 - another error in the movie. Meeting Lucille in 1939 is well documented in just about every book I have read about Laurel and Hardy. The producers probably did this since WAY OUT WEST is a better film and they wanted to recreate the dance sequence. There was no reason, however, to even include a scene with Lucille and Babe telling Stan he was going to marry her. They did not include a scene explaning how Stan met his future wife Ida, so why was it necessary to explain how Babe met Lucille?

I saw Chaplin when I was probably way too young to watch it. I always wondered though if audiences really reacted as poorly to The Great Dictator as shown in the movie.
I find myself watching the Chaplin screen moreso than the Adventurer screen as I haven't seen the 1992 film but I have seen a lot of Chaplin films lmao
