What if there were self driving cars that could carry a large group of people, and they were linked together on some sort of track to avoid accidents 🤔

The innovation of capitalism being spending the last century reinventing the train but for individual people that costs about 20x more and requires overthrowing the government of Bolivia to mine sufficient Lithium for the batteries.

@Zea Maze Electric cars aren't really a scam, they just aren't the amazing catch-all solution everyone wants them to be. Are they better for the environment? Probably, at least in cities, since they produce less fumes in densely populated areas when mostly idling in traffic. Are they overall more efficient? Possibly, depending on the source of the electricity (renewable vs coal/oil/gas). But will transitioning to electric cars save the planet? Of course not. The issue isn't in the margin of efficiency between battery and internal combustion engine, it's in the fact that every individual has one of them that costs way more CO2 than trains and buses, that and combined with an economy that almost mandates people work far from where they live which compels them to buy a car in the first place.
@franzhopper7631
@franzhopper7631 2 года назад
there was some startup thing that literally was redesigning the train. The idea was some dumb shit about instead of one vehicle with cargo attached it was a whole vehicle basically a platform that would transport one cargo container at a time drastically increasing the costs and problems because each cart is it's own thing that you would have to worry about. Found it this thing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nJNvpG5gktM.html

The machines that Theranos was making were known by many people in the field to violate the laws of physics and chemistry. My mom was a medical technologist and I started our as a chemistry major. The minuscule samples they were talking about and the number of compounds they claimed to test just theoretically didn't work out. Her engineering prof warned her it was fools errand.
@MrBabyBitch666
@MrBabyBitch666 2 года назад
yeah I studied microfluidics heavily in university so I was initially excited and then when I heard all the things they were promising it could do I immediately called bs. Like best case scenario, you can run a single test with a single drop of blood but not 20 different diagnostic tests. The concentration of the compounds we would be interested in would be in the femtomolar range, for which you would also need to include some technology to use surface enhanced raman scattering. This is obviously impossible in a supposedly cheap, easily producible diagnostic device because each one would need to include some amount of gold...

"what is cheaper, handling workers or having self driving cars?" the whole idea of the workers is that you can pay them lower than they cost, and that is not true for the cars, the cars would only be cheaper if the government used taxpayer money to pay uber for them
@NJdaniels96
@NJdaniels96 2 года назад
And besides just the pay, the workers are taking on a ton of unpaid labor and non-reimbursed costs. They pay for the car in the first place. That alone is gonna cost Uber at least $30k per car upfront. They buy insurance. Provide their own parking. Pay for maintenance. Pay for fuel. They do the cleaning themselves. And they mention a garage. So that means Uber has to either buy or rent one. Then hire human beings to be on-location to clean, maintain and secure both the cars and the storage location. And they'll have to repeat these costs in every single city they want to operate in.

I can understand if investors without a background in chemistry, medicine and engineering don't know the finer details of what is and isn't possible to do with existing technology. What I don't understand is what kind of an imbecile invests in a medical R&D company headed by a 19 year old without a science degree, much less the years of expertise in research and inside knowledge of the industry required.

21:30 that line from Peter Thiel about mortality being an ideological concept almost certainly comes from Eliezer Yudkowsky, who refers to those not focused on transhumanist immortality projects as “deathists” and whose foundation Thiel has given a lot of money to. Yudkowsky is a rabbit hole in and of himself however.

@Ian Taylor Bostrom is apparently friends with Yudkowsky in real life, so I’m not totally certain if Bostrom got the idea FROM Yudkowsky or if he just agrees with him and was citing him because he likes the guy… eh, I’m not 100% sure In any case the AI threats most prominent in Bostrom’s book “Superintelligence” do bear a striking resemblance to Yudkowsky’s “AI Foom” prophesizing and it’s not hard to read the book as an attempt to academically rehabilitate the same.

EH impersonated a successful person (steve jobs). In this sick society which celebrates the tech giants such as steve jobs and bill gates (BG-who has also involved himself in the gross medical side of the world without any medical degree), how much can we blame EH WITHOUT also confronting how people are dying from working in those carcinogenetic factories that create our phones and computers that people will line up to buy just because it's new even though their phones from 2 years ago still work as new? How much can we blame EH for faking tests when bill gates/steve jobs were creating new products, some without even implementing new tech, just to serve consumerism? But we celebrate the likes of BG and SJ. I'm just saying EH is an easy target in terms of the tech space blood money.

One reaction I had to this was similar to my reaction to learning about another blonde Ivy leaguer who, for 500 million in cash, sold her company, which had never turned a profit, whose sole innovation was turning a TV longwise and sticking a mirror in it (Brynn Putnam - company named MIRROR). My reaction is it must be nice to be White. Not that every White person is invited to pull dumb ideas out of their ass subsequently be rewarded with instant oligarch status, but you're just not subject to the same scrutiny as other races, harsh scrutiny like "does your product work at all?" or "is your company profitable?" or "do you know anything about the business in which you are representing yourself as a pioneer?".
