Trevor Chappell (under instructions from his brother Greg) wins the 1981 World Series Cup for Australia by bowling the final delivery undearm, thus precluding the possibility of Brian McKechnie scoring the six which would have tied the game for New Zealand. This video contains the entire final over plus Richie Benaud's editorial take on the incident.

His reputation and respect in Australian and International cricket is beyond. When I saw on RU-vid about his comment of the underarm delivery, he just let loose about how wrong it was. I wish all Australians could show the same spirit of sportsmanship as the late Ritchie Benaud - although his country won this particular game, he was clearly very angry with the unsporting way the game ended. Ritchie Benaud was such a wonderful commentator and it was always a great pleasure to listen to his broadcasts with the impartiality that he showed. He loved the game passionately, and always thought the game was bigger than any team or country, including his own. He will be so sorely missed and so will his commentaries. But he has left us with so many wonderful memories and will always have a very special place in cricket history.

Yes agreed. I'm sure there were many Aussie players in this team that also disagreed with the underarm decision - not just Rod Marsh and Max Walker. What angers me as an Aussie cricket fan is that we were (and still are) a legitimate force, considered to be the best in the world by many metrics. We didn't have to stoop to this level to win. It would be interesting to know what would have happened had they bowled properly. Worst case scenario - We tied a game rather than win. At least we could have retained the legend status.

I was so sorry to hear about the death of the Australian former wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh, who was one of the Australian players at this game 41 years ago and you can clearly lip read him saying “no mate” , disapproving of the action to bowl underarm for the last ball. His death and that of Shane Warne only a very short time later are a huge loss to cricket everywhere, not just Australia. A terrible time indeed for all followers of cricket. But their achievements in the game will shine on and will never be forgotten.

@@XaviRonaldo0 I may not display honour here; but I don’t think you’re justified in claiming I have no honour. The way I see it is that it is as illegal to not try to win as it is to try to win by doing things outside the rules. It is harder to lose well than to be a gracious winner: but it sounds like sour grapes to me. All honour and respects to you sir.
@XaviRonaldo0
@XaviRonaldo0 10 месяцев назад
@@prairiewolfo9274 I'm Australian and I even see this incident as an absolute disgrace. There is a reason they effectively outlawed underarm bowling after this. It is still technically legal under very strict circumstances but rolling ball will always be called a no ball no matter what. It it rolls or bounces more than twice it is deemed a no ball Saying you have no honour may not be based in fact but it's clear you have no honour in this sense if you will do anything to win no matter how shameful.
@prairiewolfo9274

@@XaviRonaldo0 I’m not an expert at cricket; and very rarely win. If there is another rule outlawing this particular action then I wouldn’t defend it. In any sport it is up to the umpire or referee to interpret the rules regarding a particular incident, and up to everyone else to abide by the decision.

Whilst I agree that it was appalling and one of the worst acts in Australian cricket history I take issue with those accusing the Australians of cheating. As pointed out in the video the delivery was not illegal in the rules. So it was more a case of Greg knowing the rules and exploiting them much like the use of the Mancad, not illegal but extremely unsportsmanlike behaviour. Whilst Greg can be blamed for the act itself, the cricket administrators must also hold some of the blame for not getting the rule banning the delivery included before the tournament began. I really felt for Trevor though, being forced by his captain and big brother to bowl what would become one of the most infamous deliveries of all time. Agree with everyone else though, Richie was spot on.

A double wicket tournament was played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 16 & 17/2/1984 . Garry Sobers, Wess Hall, then just retired Lillee, Zahir Abbas, Miyandad, Bruce Yardley, Gavaskar, Kapil, Patil, Shastri were among the stars who took part in it. Holding n Gurner had lifted the G D Birla Trophy beating Duleep Mendies n Ashant D'mel. But everyone has forgot the tournament. I hv talked with many of today's cricket writers n exparts but nobody could even remember it! TV had not entered every household those days. Nor it was an official match. India had won the Prudential Cup just 8 mnths back. Perhaps these r the reason behind forgetting the tournament. PLZ UPLOAD THE VIDEO OF THAT TOURNAMENT, IF POSSIBLE.
