As I’m writing a series *with* the “Chapter 1 - Insert Chapter Title Here” idea, but stumbling on the third few or so chapter names and considering to just name them “Chapter 1”, as well as wondering how much to put into a single chapter, how much to take out, and how much to tell the audience about the world and history, so thank you a lot for this, it really helps with those little dilemmas!

I used to use chapter headings as an outline for the first draft of my fan fictions years ago. They were low effort and too on-the-nose, but they actually worked remarkably well for as simple a thing as it was. Just cutting the purpose of the chapter down to a few words really helped me understand the chapter. And actually, I might start doing that again, just for the first draft.

That's a good point and excellent writing tip! You can use the chapter headings to help you write out what you want from chapter to chapter. They don't even need to be in the final draft.

My main example is my dragon story where I use headings to explain dragon biology or culture or whatever. Since dragons are the pov they aren't going to have a reason to explain how telepathy works or what different titles mean or how the political structure works. I could put it in the story but snippets that get straight to the point so I'm not pausing the story to explain it. Plus the explanations are from a human book but with occasional edits by dragons when they get it wrong. So you get two views.

I really like that idea! That's fascinating and engaging. I also like the addition that humans get stuff wrong and the dragons have to edit it!
