Awesome! Happy to hear you found it useful as a demonstration, too. I don't explain quite as much as Trevor (Me, Myself & Die) or Matt (The Bad Spot) so I'm always happy to hear there's something to take away from my "show & not-so-much-tell". And naturally also very happy to hear you enjoyed the story!

Apparently I am the only one who can relate to the axe dude on the right in the intro (@ 00:40 second mark) who just can't seem to get a break. That dude is my spirit animal. Go forth, axe dude, you foolishly brave man... you got this!

This is the first time I've watched solo RPG actual play. I was surprised that I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the appearance of the spirit. Having someone to see and comment upon the murder that can be taken for granted in fantasy RPGs is a powerful story shaping element. I'm tempted to go back and watch the setup videos but I think I'll follow Kynan's story a bit more first. Thank you for making this!
@killtenratsrpg
@killtenratsrpg Год назад
Thanks for the comment! The spirit definitely helped me figure out who Kynan is in that first series. It’s also a pretty useful “GM character” that can steer things a bit in a pinch, even though I fortunately didn’t have to use that aspect. Plus, it’s a conversation partner for long solo journeys so it seemed like a good pick for an actual play. Interesting that you happened on this little channel if you’ve never watched a solo play through before considering how many bigger ones are out there. Glad you’ve found your way here and happy to hear you’re enjoying the videos!

I'm about to start a game with the Spiritbound asset which I've never used, so I'm excited to see how that works out for Kynan!

Honestly, so far I'd say "extremely underused as an asset" (I don't think I've relied on it once) but as a roleplaying aid and character element, Siorra is absolutely invaluable!

I appreciate you taking the time to comment even if it was a long time ago. I had to step away from RU-vid for a bit and got a little frustrated by that, so I wasn't answering comments like I should have. Apologies for that! The intro was a little experiment before the very first play video I did and I've always meant to insert more "visual aids" into my episodes. The problem really is that you're either relegated to stock footage (which is limited), commissioned works (which I have done, but sparsely since it's quite expensive) or AI art, which is just plain old theft and I'm not going to be using. But yeah... the idea keeps coming back to me and I keep meaning to try out new approaches. Miniatures might be cool but I suck at painting them!

Respect. I too have been watching MMD! Even after watching that show I am learning from this one. I have one session of Ironsworn under my belt, but your Campaign videos and this first session makes me want to start fresh. I find myself listening and creating the world based on implied facts from the narrative. Wool clothes mean sheep and weaving. Iron implements means smithing. Is there only the "magic" iron? Or is there copper/tin...bronze for everyday implements (red smithing)? Bone? Bone needles etc. Homespun? What does this say about Kynan? Is his go to...to murder people upon first meeting them? What are the taboos about murder (and theft)? What is the punishment? Slavery? Maiming? Dane geld? I know a bunch of rabbit holes :P
@killtenratsrpg
@killtenratsrpg 2 года назад
Yeah that's a challenge, the aspect of world-building by implied existence of things can drag you into a pretty heavy level of detail and the outcome is usually pretty fun to think about, but the trade-off is that it can seriously slow the game down. I have to keep myself from going overboard because I wouldn't make any progress for entire episodes at a time otherwise!

Firstly I have to say, this is an amazing video. Much kudos on the production efforts, I can only guess on how much time it took and so I thank you. Secondly, oh for gorrams sake... just say *it*: "tomb raiding" there it's done, look now that didn't hurt. Thirdly, no wait... just ignore points one and two, this is a great video. Thankyou, it's both helpful and appreciated. *clicks the subscribe button*

Thanks! Funny, I did think about the whole „not knowing what to call Kynan‘s old job“ a few days ago. I think I mainly struggled with it back then because I didn’t want to restrict what it was he and his band did by choosing too specific a term, so I tried to keep it vague and prevent a potential future need to retcon it. But yeah… I probably should’ve just called them Delvers because, y‘know… Ironsworn and all.

Hey KTR! Looks great! My friend and I had a question about your setup. I noticed you have several cameras filming you, but wondered how you got your moving camera to do such a smooth, seemless pan from one side to another. Great stuff! Hope to see more.
@killtenratsrpg
@killtenratsrpg 3 года назад
Hey hey! Thanks a lot! That moving camera is on a Neewer Motorized Camera Slider mounted on some light stands. It's automated and can be calibrated with an app so it knows between which start and end points to travel. The battery charge lasts for quite some time. I usually record 1 1/2 hour chunks of raw footage to edit and it's never gotten close to running out. Neat gadget!

I know a couple years later but i pucture a bromze age northern europe with these mystical lands where the firstborn have discovered iron mettallurgy, whoch is rare to bronze age Ironlanders. So "like magic" compared to brlnze age weapons.

I’ll be interested in seeing how you deal with a miss with a match. You gave +1 supply on a good match so are you more harsh when the opposite happens?
@killtenratsrpg
@killtenratsrpg 2 года назад
Sometimes too harsh, I feel. It's a fairly common player "error" in Ironsworn to go overboard in interpreting the "make it hurt" part of negative matches. And if you're watching this further you'll see just how frequently they happen. So it's definitely a bit of a tightrope act getting it exactly right. I'd advise to not be too self punishing. As long as it pushes the narrative it's good enough without near-killing the PC, usually! Sorry bout the horribly late response, really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. A new puppy hit the house and wrecked my schedule. All good now!

I have watched a few different solo RPG actual play videos now and i notice everyone does this multiple camera angle with cuts between style. I am curious why that is popular? You aren't walking anywhere so there is no movement to follow or that one angle doesn't get. I find it rather distracting and imagine it is a lot of extra work with editing.
@killtenratsrpg
@killtenratsrpg 2 года назад
Hard to answer for me to be honest. I like this type of heavily edited content. "There is no movement to follow" isn't really the only viable reason for editing though. It may be to you but that's just a really arbitrary way of imposing rules. In the end, it's a visual format. It clearly appeals to more people than just me, judging by the size of the audience. I personally have a hard time staying focused if the screen is a shared VTT with a stamp sized webcam in the corner because for the majority of the time nothing relevant happens visually. It might as well be a podcast. Editing and multi-cam setups are a way to make use of the visual format. It's not for everyone and that's pretty much working as intended with these things. I get why it's not to your taste, it might be too hectic or seem pointless and you're not alone in that assessment either. It is what is is!
@sousalarson6858
@sousalarson6858 2 года назад
@@killtenratsrpg I appreciate the response. I really was just curious didn't mean any shade by it. I am someone who far prefers podcast so perhaps that's why it is less to my taste. Unfortunately, there aren't very many solo RPGs in podcast form out there which is why I have been watching them as videos. And just happened to notice this trend.

@@sousalarson6858 On one of his livestream, Trevor Devall of Me, Myself and Die explained that he like to use the multiple camera to emphasize conversation. Instead of saying "he said, she said" he can just turn into a camera for a character, and turn to other camera for the other character, creating an illusion of 2 people talking to each other, which works so well for making the conversation seems "alive". Also overhead camera and some cameras around the table for the miniature he used.
