Havn't watched this type of video about Volleyball before, I'm here for the Haikyuu reactions :D But I really enjoyed this, the clips were great and your commentary added nicely to it :)
Great video! I am a Brazilian fan that came for haikyuu, I never even played voleyball, but I took your characteristics of a good setter in a life advice kind of a way and found it inspiring.
excited for a great video as always, sarah! im very passionate about volleyball and have been for a while, but there are no clubs or teams near me that cater to my age or ability, so i've kinda been perpetually in the beginner stage, but your videos on volleyball theory and solo drills have really helped me get to grips with the sport!!
I came to your channel for the Haikyuu reactions, but I've continued enjoying your other content. Though volleyball is not my sport (Muay Thai), I really like several of your training videos (static and dynamic hip/glute exercises) and use them in my own routine. I appreciate these sorts of breakdown videos as well, because I've found myself enjoying watching volleyball more. I just wanted to thank you for all the work you put into your videos.
I love this list, but I couldn't help but be distracted when Sekita appeared in the background video! He’s definitely my favorite setter. Looking at him on the court, it’s like he’s a human living in a world of giants, but once the match starts you realize he’s on the court for a reason. Being the setter for a team as technical as the Japan men’s team can’t be easy, but he does his job really well and makes his hitters shine (although I think he could use his middle a little more efficiently). He definitely has his flaws and his height makes him an easy target for hitters to hit over, but I believe he’s still one of the best male setters in the world right now.
Lovely video! Will you do these "needed mentality" videos for other positions in indoor volleyball as well? Or perhaps on the mindset needed for beach players?
I've never played volleyball, and was never particularly interested in it until I watched Haikyuu. I did use to photograph sports for my yearbook, local paper, and school website back in high school, and I think I shot one volleyball game for my college paper at one point, but I had no idea really what to look for, and most of the sports I shot in high school were your usual (American) football, basketball, track & field, and a teensy bit of soccer and baseball. Watching Haikyuu, especially some of the episodes and moments that you have yet to see, really made me wish I'd gotten to shoot more volleyball, too. I'm definitely at least a little interested in picking up some volleyball casually once literally everyone I know stops catching COVID, but honestly I'm really much more interested in trying to photograph some volleyball in the future. I'm also scared of coming off as a weirdo / creep though if I just go somewhere people are playing and start taking photos though 😰
Sarah, do you have any tips on building consistency for a setter in a more beginner-intermediate team where the passes are usually not amazing? I struggle a bit with putting out consistent sets, and having to run around and chase the ball doesn't help either.
I think doing any type of target setting is useful. You could tape a target to the wall or you can use a basketball hoop or an actual setting hoop. Working on hitting the target from a stationary position and then doing it after moving is great training
@@SarahPavanVolleyball Thanks Sarah! I can set decently enough if I'm given a perfect pass, but I do need to work on setting from a different position. I will definitely add setting at a target to my practice routine!
@@juicytin14 try to -get quick right under the ball -turn before setting, so that you are facing to where you wanna set, shoulders perpendicular -practice, practice, practice
This was a well structured video about the qualities of setters, the only thing I don't necessarily agree with is them "definitely being Gryffindors", because that just covers the confident leaders part. If we're going by general characteristics hitters are the most Gryffindor to me personally, because of their flashiness and popularity. Setters would be the intellectual & adaptable Ravenclaws, who can also be creative oddballs. Liberos and DS would be the reliable Hufflepuffs, & blockers would be the intimidating and occasionally cunning Slytherins. Despite JK Rowling continuing to publicly be a transphobe and spread hateful opinions, the idea of people in the Harry Potter universe playing volleyball is quite intriguing. Volleyball combined with magic would be so amazing.
I like this assessment and I definitely over-committed to one characteristic. I agree that setters are better characterized as Ravenclaws. I would probably switch liberos and middle blockers though. Middles give me more of a Hufflepuff vibe tbh… thoughts?
@@SarahPavanVolleyball I guess that it'd come down to each individual, but it's true that Hufflepuffs being protective and loyal can be applied to middles, too. Both liberos and middles play defense a lot, but the only reason I'd go for Slytherin with middles is the fact that they also play offense and their playstyle can be way more aggressive overall.
Thanks for the informative video! Are there any specific physical traits that are advantageous for setters? For example, height - while there are obvious advantages to being tall in any position in volleyball, are there competitive benefits to be able to have a higher starting set height? Or maybe hand size? ❤
I have played with tall setters, short setters, skinny setters, not skinny setters, super athletes, and unassuming ones. Sure- being tall helps as far as putting up a big block, being an attacking threat, etc. but some of the best setters in the world have "non-traditional volleyball bodies" and the most important things, in my opinion, are the things listed in the video.
Hi Sarah, great video..You have such a lucid way of explaining these things! I have a question though- In your career, have you ever come across a setter that you found to be really intimidating and very difficult to read? I know there are a lot of good players out there, but surely someone must have stood out ? 🙂
The best female setter I ever played with was Fofão. I wouldn't call her intimidating, but all of her sets looked the same until the ball was released from her hands. She was phenomenal.
I think this is avery good video, thank for explaining about the position, I am a newbie to the sport so I am still deciding on which position I would like to play, but for my height I am a little bit limited. Thank you so much, by the way do you have any recommendations for new players?
I have a Beginner Volleyball playlist that goes through a lot of the skills and basics, but my biggest piece of advice would just be to touch the ball as much as you can, and take advantage of every opportunity you have to play. It will help you improve so much!
My dream was to become a setter but I'm the exact opposite of each of these characteristics! So I guess I'll stick to watching haikyuu and real matches in silence from now on 👉👈
Well Hinata is short and became an amazing hitter anyway, he even learned a lot of things that looked like the opposite of his personality at the start of the show.
I really wanted to be a middle blocker too. Because I like blocking aces and see their disappointed faces , and then I'll smirk on my way down to the floor. But damn it! I'm 170cm!!
You could have been an excellent setter if the coaches would have put you there...cause of your height, body frame... amazing blocker to the opposite hitters ...oh well
@@asianmtl there may be some footage floating around somewhere. I played against Egonu in the 2017-2018 Italian Serie A season when she played for Novara and I was playing for Casalmaggiore.
Dude, don’t bug her for reactions. She knows we like them. The only thing comments like this will do is make her not want to watch because people were rude
She's already said before that the Thursday uploads will be a mix of Haikyuu and volleyball videos... At the end of the day this is a volleyball channel, not just a Haikyuu or reaction channel.
Before she reacts to Haikyuu, she is a volleyball channel. I mean I learned a lot of things about Beach Volleyball because of this channel. Please go bug somewhere else, you have been doing this schtick for so long.
