We'll be sharing a story from Shelby County History that best exemplifies a given character trait (i.e. honesty, kindness, loyalty, determination, ingenuity, etc.) and highlighting an artifact in our collection that ties in with that story.
This week, we spent a lot of time thinking about perseverance: Judge William Peaslee is the reason Shelbyville is known as the first community west of the Allegheny Mountains with a train, but his goal of getting a train line through Shelbyville beginning with the building of a demo in 1833 (and launching in 1834) saw investor's interest die only a few weeks after the construction of his train.
Opportunity doesn't always happen when and how we plan; in the 1850s, partially because of the work already done by Judge Peaslee (Peasley), Shelbyville finally had a train line pass through it.
