What a privilege to be looking over the shoulder of a great portrait artist while he works. Thank you Kara for making this available. Charcoal is an intimidating medium for me, but this gives me a little more confidence. I'm also confident Monsieur Vuillard would be pleased with this wonderful portrait.

I love that you show your reference as you work. I love that you don't have distracting background music! I, too, like to rub charcoal on sandpaper both to sharpen the vine charcoal and just to create a small amount of dust that I dip my blending stump into to draw with and to add dark shapes with. "I'm trying to stay truer to the ways these guys worked...", you say. Who are the 'guys' you are referring to? I have found that when I demonstrate, it's sometimes difficult to explain what I do in a way that others can understand. It helps if they have had some practical experience working with the medium. I used to look at the practice of drawing as painting's poor cousin. I drew roughly just to be able to proceed with the application of my oils. It was only a means to an end. But I have come to appreciate and value drawing for its own sake. It is an elegant art that can bear profound results ! The work I've done with graphite and charcoal during these past months of 'sheltering in place' have yielded pieces that stand up more than favorably to my oil paintings.

Hi , you ever thought your using too much colour to paint with ? Ive admitted to myself , after 30 years !, that my colour work is sooooo much weaker than my charcoal and tonal painting is. " Tone does ALL the work while colour gets all the praise". So true. So true. Wish I'd been told this in school !!!!!?????? As I was very , naturally talented. Accepted into a Foundation course a year earlier due to my ability. But ! What a waste of time it was for both party's. If I'd had RU-vid 33 years ago ? Well who knows. Love this guy.

@@daikayll1897 Highly saturated color has its place. Look at the Fauves: Matisse, Derain,Dufy, Miro,VlaminThe Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists, Degas,Gauguin, van Gogh, Cézanne, Lautrec etc. But,of course you're quite right. For most painters, value and a modest application of color is enough to create contrast .Look at Rembrandt or Wyeth. Convert their paintings to gray scale and they work just fine. I've been working with pastels during this past year .And,like oil paint, their range and depth of color is seductive. But I have adopted your idea and pulled back in my use of highly saturated pigment

Who is guy in the picture? I feel like I recognise him for some reason and it’s really bugging me. Maybe being stupid but I’ve tried searching google and I keep coming up blank 🤦🏻‍♂️
