A corollary to charging etiquette: As stated in the video, don't use a "higher-power than your vehicle can make use of" stall if a "lower-power, but still more than your vehicle can make use of" stall is available. If a charging station has two 150kW stalls and two 350kW stalls, and your vehicle tops out at 75kW, please use a 150kW stall, saving the higher-power stall for a driver of a vehicle that can make full use of the higher power. The corollary: If you come upon a charging station, and see a lower-power vehicle using a higher-power stall, don't get mad at them. You don't know the situation when _they_ arrived. For all you know, when they arrived, all the lower-power stalls were in use, and that higher-power stall is all that was open. As someone whose first EV was a "lower power" (50kW max) EV, I had this happen to me a few times. A 350kW was all that was available, so that's where I plugged in. Now owning a >200kW-capable vehicle, I try not to get annoyed when only a 150kW (or even a

This video made me think of the journey we made since we got our first EV in July of 2021 which involved a lot of research and trial and error. We started with a 110 trickle charger that came with our 2014 BMW i3, to sharing the dryer plug (NEMA 14-30) using a Split Volt splitter and Split Volt EVSE to charge our 2018 BMW i3 that did not come with an EVSE, to having a NEMA 14-50 plug installed via a Qmerit recommended installer when we bought our 2022 Chevy Bolt (GM covered $1000 of the cost which left us with about $900), to my son charging our old 2014 BMW i3 with an EVSE with a NEMA 10-30 plug. We've DC fast charged using Electrify America, EV Connect, and ChargePoint and destination charged using ChargePoint a couple of times. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Tesla V3 Superchargers which are supposed to open up to GM vehicles at the end of this month. (which is next week BTW) I'm not holding my breath on it happening this month, but fingers crossed it won't be long. There are still some stretches around where we live that are difficult for my Chevy Bolt because of gaps in the non-Tesla public EV charging infrastructure.

(Bolt) This helps me go beyond the boundaries I've put up for myself as I learn about charging, charging stations, as I'm becoming more familiar with owning an EV. Love it and ready to ditch my gas car as soon as my Aptera reservation is ready! Go electric! 🎉

Love this much needed starter video. It's the kind of video I can share with my family if they're thinking of going electric. Btw, I don't know if US is different to UK but as far as I know, you have to press the button on the Supercharger plug to open your Tesla's charge flap and it opens less than a second later. People just get used to pressing the button as they remove the plug from the holster so it feels/looks like your charge flap opens magically as you approach it.

I believe NACS is being regular used at 750 KW. Thought not at any public chargers yet. The NACS chargers installed at Pepsi for Tesla Semis operate at 750 KW. Basically Tesla installed eight 375 KW cabinets powering 4 NACS cables, for an average of 750 KW. They might output at higher levels like 1000 KW.

A couple of corrections. In Europe and Australia, a 230/240V 10A EVSE is actually classified as level 1, not level 2. And we still call them granny chargers. Also you can't always just "plug your car in". There are plenty of gotchas with Level 2 EVSE's. Eg with lots of EVs if you plug into a Tesla wall connector it won't work depending on the generation of the charger, whether it's been firmware updated and whether your EV is compatible. Remember in Europe and Australia modern Teslas come with the same plug as every other current EV - type 2. Or you might have scheduled charging on.

Something I recently discovered with my PHEV is that the manufacturer of the GFCI outlet or circuit breaker matters. Some of them appear to have inadequate EMI/RFI filtering and therefore tend to trip immediately upon the start of charging (ahem…eaton…). Replacing the GFCI device with one known to have greater EMI/RFI immunity resolves the problem.

Just a correction on the etiquette segment. Some ID.4's like mine can charge up to 180+ kW so using a 150 kW charger is not the right charger to use. In fact, the EA 150 kW chargers only produce 150 kW for 800V architecture cars. For 400 V architecture cars like the ID.4, you can only get about 110 kW max on them. For my Bolt, I try to use the 62.5 kW ChargePoint chargers instead of EA, especially since EA raised their prices so much.

Educational and entertaining, thank you. The system is a mess, but unless the unlikely occurs i don't see the US system matching with the European. While it would be more work for your team it might be best to split the information into two or more separate programs. US and most of the rest. I'm a UK Chademo user at the moment so I'm going to be an outlier anyway.

With the move to NACS, and different NACS adapters for AC and DC, that isn't true. I have a "TeslaTap" adapter now that lets me plug my Ford Mach-E into a Tesla "Destination Charger". It works great for that. But it doesn't work at all if I plug it into a Supercharger. I'll need the upcoming separate "NACS to CCS adapter" for that to work, and _that_ adapter won't work with Destination Chargers!

Thank you. As an EE I was expecting the distinction between AC charging and DC fast-charging to be fully explained. After listening to the full video, I agree it was not necessary for the majority of your viewers. Knowing this could be useful if the onboard charger failed and the user notices that they cannot charge from an AC source (Level 1 or 2 destination chargers) but can charge just fine from a DC fast charger. I was hoping you would have a lot more to say about the handshaking process between the vehicle and the charger, but I guess that is more complex than you believed to be worthwhile. You didn’t mention that there may be fees for overstaying the necessary time for your requested charging. I also think you should have mentioned the differences between 400V & 800 V architectures for some vehicles as this can also impact charging speeds at DC fast chargers.

The different connectors between NA and Europe have nothing to do with 120V vs 240V, NA has 240V L1-L2 in regular homes which is used for HVAC, electric clothes dryers, water heaters, stoves and other major loads like EV charging. It has to do with much of Europe having 3ph power more readily available everywhere so it needs an extra pin for L3. As for plugging into "car-appropriate" chargers, that whole concept needs to go away by using chargers with banks of DC-DC converters that can be allocated anywhich way between connected vehicles. Plug in wherever and your car automatically gets whatever the site's HVDC bus can spare, which is what Tesla is doing with v4.
@mark_5588
@mark_5588 4 месяца назад
The multiple power levels will not go away for a very long time. Lower power units cost a lot less to purchase, install, and to operate. Those lower power units let more cords get installed for less money, which is always a priority for both companies and for governments.
@teardowndan5364
@teardowndan5364 4 месяца назад
@@mark_5588 The expensive parts are all of the rugged AC-side input filtering, power factor correction and aggregation of alternate power sources. Once you are on the common HVDC bus, all you need between the common bus and each of the 20+ cables is a relatively simple, inexpensive and efficient DC-DC converter. Does Tesla make multiple charging speed variants of its v4 chargers? No, every v4 cable goes up to 350kW depending on vehicle capabilities and available site power. Having a 350kW DC-DC converter for each output is likely cheaper and more reliable than splitting the converter into eight bricks and then having switchgear route power from those bricks to each attached cable as needed. That also eliminates the scenario where someone with a 350+kW-capable vehicle gets 100+kW stolen from them when someone uses the other cable. I know I'd be pissed if I made a charging stop expecting to reach my charging target in 20 minutes, only to find out I'm half-way there because someone robbed half of my charging speed.

We also need to start telling people that NADA is not a friend to the EV industry. They make ooodles of $ on ICE parts and service.
