We made our way up to Brewster, NY to give the newly retrofitted Tesla supercharger a try. The included "magic dock" allows for non-tesla EV's to charge at superchargers. It was an interesting and exciting experience! Please also check out the fantastic video done by Consumer Reports linked below!

Me2, it is almost like legacy automakers are trying to destroy EV adoption by implementing half-baked beta charging protocols, turning most non-Tesla EVs local area grocery getters. Another huge letdown by some is the location of the charge port behind the front wheel well, making dangerously long cables a necessity, so Taycan, F150 owners will not be able to charge here.

VW ID.4 Pro S AWD. I charged at that charger twice on Sunday. Worked great both times. Second time I was at a lower SOC and the temperature was warmer so I saw charging speeds of around 105kw. I was pretty happy with that. Hope we start to see more magic docks soon.

We have a 2021 VW ID4 RWD Pro S and absolutely love it. That being said, you're right; EA sucks. We also have a 2022 Tesla Model 3 and aren't thrilled about Tesla opening up SuperChargers to non-Tesla vehicles but it's really a necessity to accelerate the adoption of EVs. We charge at home 99% of the time and will continue to use EA with our ID4 because it's free for 3 years of unlimited charging but the Tesla charging experience is way, way better. Great video.

Thanks for pointing out that when the adapter unlocks, you push the plug in before you pull it out. So many guys doing this just yank and yank on the plug to take it out, and then say, that was hard. No, you're not paying attention. I'm afraid some people might start damaging the adapter/plug yanking on it like that.

Yeah I agree. There needs to be some sort of signage or something to make it more obvious. Really people just need to pay attention bc the app does tell you to push in, then pull.

V4 with longer cables and 800V architecture, which current Teslas cannot take full advantage of, will solve that. They just opened the first location with them in Denmark. For the time being, on V3 and V2, a simple cable extension will do.

Well you have your wishes granted Sir. I personally think the best format is similar to gas stations - as in - drive through. With a little more space in each bay, then the inevitable towed all electric caravan or trailer can also be a breeze. Think of a Lightship with depleted battery. Drive up and both caravan and car charge up simultaneously by inductive (Wireless) means. That, I think is the probable future of EV charging.

They are only doing 3500 not all the network will be open. Contrary to youtube the super chargers are not everywhere. Lots of towns don’t have them. And they are not always working.
@OlsonFamilyElectricAdventures
Valid points. The rollout of Magic Docks will be slow, and you are correct that only a fraction of total superchargers will be retrofitted, but it’s an exciting start. Also true that Superchargers aren’t “everywhere”, but it sure feels like it. There are over ten x the number of superchargers compared to EA, and they are being built out at a torrid pace. Also, they are wayyyyy more reliable than EA. Occasionally one or two out of twelve superchargers at a station will be down, whereas about a third or half of all EA chargers seem to be down at any given time.

I always hear that many - if not most - Tesla owners in the US bought it because of the Supercharger network. Here in North-Western Europe, the availability of chargers is almost never an issue: There is a huge amount of good non-Tesla supercharging networks, often closer to highways than Tesla chargers. Therefore I think/hope it's just a matter of time before also in the US, people don't have to select a car based on the charging network! By the way, that Tesla Superchargers are now opening up is nice (here in the Netherlands already hundreds of Tesla Superchargers are open for other cars), but it is also a profit-driven decision: they simply want to get a piece of the pie that competing charging networks would otherwise get. A happy Skoda Enyaq iV80 owner (the sister car of your WV ID.4, not available in the US)
@MH-wm6df

Yes, part of purchasing a Tesla is also because of the great supercharging at work however, with 350 miles of range, and a daily commute of 40 miles, that was no reason to purchase the car. I purchased the Tesla because it is better in every single way.

Yeah the supercharger network is a huge advantage here in the US. It’s the number one reason by far that I recommend Tesla. It’s makes traveling so much less stressful.

As a Tesla owner, I think this is great. But you CCS drivers be aware that the parking space you use to charge maybe the space a Tesla might use to use another supercharger because your charging port is in a different location than a Tesla. (Volvos and Polestars especially welcome because their charging ports are in the same as the Tesla charging port.) In other words, you're using/blocking 2 superchargers. Be creative in the way you park for using a supercharger if you're not a Volvo/Polestar. .... And you parked in a great place to solve this problem.

For me, the price premium of an EV is the primary reason I wouldn’t buy one. I live in a house, so charging wouldn’t be an issue. However, an ID.4 is almost $10k more than an similarly equipped Tiguan… which also has a nicer interior. Once that price gap is eliminated, I’m all for buying an EV. Unfortunately, I’m worried that gap will be eliminated by the ICE vehicles becoming more expensive.
@OlsonFamilyElectricAdventures
Sticker price is only one part of the equation. Remember you also won’t be paying for gas, and maintenance is almost non existent. For example the total cost of ownership of a model 3 is almost identical to a Toyota Carolla. If you charge at home, you are filling up for pennies.
@ScubaSteveCanada
@ScubaSteveCanada Год назад
Tesla will do the old "bait n switch." Once you're hooked on using their stations, they will raise the prices on the non-Teslas charging at them. Then you'll think twice about using them.
@OlsonFamilyElectricAdventures
No I won’t, I’ll happily pay up for the convenience, speed, and reliability. Also, I probably will have traded in the ID.4 for a Model Y by then. I also honesty doubt they will raise prices. They have the massive scale to undercut everyone else (assuming there ever is competition in the charging space) to retain business and still make a killing.

As a fellow ID.4 owner in an aera with extremely limited non-Tesla public charging, how do we know when we can use a local Tesla Super Charger? The fastest adoption rate to me would be to just open all Tesla Super Chargers and let each owner bring his own Tesla to J1772 Adapter and to have the connected charger activated at the time of charging. Seems simple enough, although I know that it's not a perfect solution and some will try using the wrong adapters. It's just tough to keep waiting with seemly no way of knowing what will happen when 😞 Thanks for the review and God bless,
@OlsonFamilyElectricAdventures
It’s definitely frustrating. I think the rollout of retrofitted tesla superchargers will be pretty slow. They can be found on the tesla app as well as tesla.com/supercharger. A Tesla to ccs adapter would be amazing. Tesla to j1772 wouldn’t work because j1772 is designed for slower amps and wouldn’t be able to handle it, but I know what you mean.
