I've just ordered a Peugeot e-2008 through work and awaiting install date from Pod Point- good to hear your good experience with them. The car arrives in May, I'll be sure to use your Octopus referral if it is still valid then :)

I'm collecting my first EV (Audi E-tron) this week and it comes with free PodPoint charger. It's a shame they don't allow to schedule charging. Sound like an easy thing to implement. I guess will have to schedule in the car settings.

I had my pod point installed today- the engineer said there’s an update coming imminently for scheduled charging, although check if you can do this on the Audi app as I know you can with Peugeot’s one

Good video, very informative. I would like to see more of the electrical installation. Was the charger wired directly into your existing consumer unit or was it wired through an additional supply point in the external wall meter cupboard. Thanks. Jason
@elwell4939

Thanks for feedback, I definitely could have included that. It was all wired into the external electrical cupboard which is actually just out of camera view to the left of where they installed the Pod-Point unit. Hope this helps!

I went with the EO Smart Charger, cause I think the PodPoint looks like a spare wheel stuck on the wall. Similar price with the OLEV Grant, installed by McNally. App gives me charging history so I can track KwH used and figure out Miles per KwH independently.

I've just ordered a Model 3 - an easy choice. Selecting a suitable charger is much more difficult! Does the Tesla allow you to set both the start and end charge times - or do you set only the start time and a charge percentage that you want to achieve before it automatically stops charging?
@elwell4939
@elwell4939 3 года назад
It’s the latter. It works really well though. It will charge up to the set charge percentage and will stop on its own! Otherwise Pod-Point have now released an update to support scheduled charging in their app which lets you set a start and and end time instead of using the in-car settings as another option.

I think you dodged a bullet with rolec😁 I hear you don't need an earth spike now for podpoint units, did they install one on your installation? Can't see one from this video, also did they install an additional matt:e unit by the fuse board? Thanks 👍
@elwell4939
@elwell4939 3 года назад
Lucky me! No, it’s was super straightforward. They did install an additional unit in the external fuse box (just out of view to the left of the Pod-Point unit!)

@@elwell4939 Glad you had a good experience. I narrowed Pod-Point down to 1 of 3. I was hoping for Pod-Point to come through as my company is also considering them but as they are the only ones where their appointed installer hasn’t bothered to contact me after over a week to sort out a non standard install quote I’ve moved on without them.
@mickbitchum4664
@mickbitchum4664 3 года назад
Rolec are the Nokia of EV chargers, every one had one once but they've been left behind as they are awkward to fit for installers, with no PEN fault protection so earth rods are required 95% of the time. I would go with the Sync EV over the EO mini (they look the same)as it has PEN fault protection so no earth rods or extra equipment is needed. It also has load management to prevent overload of the main fuse. It's a little bit more expensive but is far superior. In regards to installing consumer units in meter boxes, this is not allowed by the local DNO. They could ask for the equipment to be removed as the meter box belongs to them for there equipment....many installers seem to ignore this though so it's always a risk.

Annoyingly I’ve never been able to get ‘Scheduled Charging’ to work on my 71 M3LR. Well, there’s not the option to set a ‘stop at’ time which means that the car continues to draw charge until it hits whatever the charge limit is set at. This is fine when you are over half a charge as you can set the charge limit to only add 120miles (4 hours at 5p/kWh) but when the battery is very low, the car has to charge up to 50% as the slider on screen/in app doesn’t allow you to go below 50% meaning additional hours (more than 4hrs) before it hits this limit. Does anyone know how to set a ‘start change’ AND ‘end charge’ time please?

Hi - I have just taken delivery of a Tesla M3 and I already had a Pod Point charger from my previous car a Golf GTE. When I unlocked the GTE the charger plug would unlock as well but on the Tesla I have to use the unlock button in the Tesla App to get the charger plug to release. Is this your experience as well? Cheers

@elwell4939 3 года назад
Hey Brian! Congrats on the Model 3 purchase. You’re in for a treat! Unfortunately that is my experience too. It would be great if there was a toggle such as ‘Unlock charge port when Bluetooth key is within range’ or similar as I also find this a little annoying! Worth noting that this can be done on the screen inside also.
@brianeighteen8814
@brianeighteen8814 3 года назад
@@elwell4939 Thanks for the reply - annoying as you say but a great car. The only other point I have is my M3 does not charge to the rated 360 WLTP range - its consistently 325 under test. I tried quite a few electric cars before purchase and they all charged to the advertised range. I have an LG battery 75KWH which will never charge to 360 miles and reading the reviews it would seem that a 79KWH battery was used originally and helped the increase in range from the 2020 model. Do you know what is installed in your car? Looking at the WLTP certification site an 82KWH battery would seem be implied from the results.

I'm trying to understand the routing of the cable from the house consumer unit to the podpoint before ordering. Ours is in the middle of the house under the stairs will this mean an ugly cable routing through the house? Or are they commonly routed within walls?

This is probably a pointless question but...With the recent weather we've had how has the wall mount and charge port held up, is it secure when it's in the wall? Just thinking kids knocking it or wind blowing it out of the holder
@elwell4939
@elwell4939 2 года назад
It’s actually a good question to be honest, I would probably be wondering about how the build quality holds up too. I’ve been very impressed with the unit. It’s very sturdy and feels solid when you click the charger back into the wall after charging the car. The cable wraps around the unit nice and tight also so there’s nothing blowing around. Zero issues during the bad weather we’ve had or since I got it. Hope this this helps!

Just for future reference, these aren't chargers. The charger is built into the car. This is EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment).. They don't do much more than supply power to the vehicle for it to then charge (convert from AC to DC etc).
