Here's an interesting piece of trivia... The Duke of Cumberland behaved with such savage brutality in the days following Culloden that he earned the nickname 'Butcher'. The day after the battle he supervised, personally, the killing of wounded Highlanders lying on the field. At one point his group came upon a wounded Scottish officer, a man of 'quality' and Cumberland ordered a young British officer to kill him. The British officer replied - to a general and a prince - that he "was an officer, not an executioner" and refused the order absolutely. That officer was James Wolfe, who became General Wolfe and who defeated the French outside of Québec in the Conquest, and died at the moment of victory.
Little known fact, in 1745/46 the hessians (hessen-cassel) sent 6000 soldiers to aid the british forces in suppressing the jacobite rebellion. The then heir to the Landgraf, Frederick ll (often confused with KING Frederick ll of Prussia) violently refused Cumberlands orders of carrying out "scorched earths" politics (he was safe from princely wrath, being his cousin, unlike Cumberlands officers) and gained the respect of highlanders (jacobites and loyalists), this being very much to his catholic creed and being amongst the "age of enlightenment" figureheads in europe at that time, later he was scathed for renting out his soldiers to fight the american tax-evaders and slave owners Whashington, Jefferson and Franklin, whilst only allying with Britain against France and Austria in a treaty of protestant powers (remember, he hself was a catholic!) against a catholic power block (catholic France and Spain allied with the protestant colonies!) But then, history is written by the victors... 😅
I think it's a fascinating "what if" of history if Bonnie Prince Charlie won the Jacobite Uprising. There are so many variables: without the Hanoverians in charge maybe Parliament would have been forced to accept concessions under a new Stuart monarchy, or Charles proves so inept that the UK goes to Republican rule having run out of Protestant royal houses. Endless possibilities abound! Thanks for drawing attention to this fascinating time in history.
The Jacobites may as well be called the Jesuits as they continue to pursue the reversal of the Protestant Reformation and a return to the Absolute Authority of the Pope and the Divine Rights of Kings. The Republican CHURCH became the synagogue of Satan -- Revelation 3: 9. Epochal Eclipse April 8th 2024. Matthew 16: 4 Jonah 3: 4-5, 8 Jonah 4: 11
The House of Stuart is very interesting. From being a Scottish noble family to becoming rulers of Scotland, England and Ireland and eventually becoming pretenders to the British throne. Thank you so much for making this video.
Here's an interesting piece of alcohol trivia... The "Rusty Nail," a drink popularized in the 1960s by the "Rat Pack" (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr.), is a mix of Scotch whiskey and Drambuie (typically 2:1). According to legend: "The story of Drambuie began in 1745 when it arrived on British shores under the guardianship of its original custodian, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (known as Bonnie Prince Charlie). It was the Prince’s personal draft, and he drank a few drops each day for strength and vitality. *** Pursued by the King’s men [following Culloden] he fled to The Isle of Skye. After a period of exile on the island his pursuers caught up with him and his fate lay with the Clan MacKinnon who bravely helped the Prince escape the British Isles for good. In thanks for his unwavering loyalty the Prince gave John MacKinnon, the clan leader, the secret recipe to his personal liqueur, a gift that the Clan were to treasure down the generations." Slàinte, mes amis.
I loved Charlie's story. When I lived in Scotland, I visited Falkland Palace which was the Stewarts Home. Always thought his story was interesting. Thank you.
Fun fact: Charlotte of the Palitinate had a better claim to the English throne after the Acts of Settlement, but she had converted to Catholicism making her aunt, Sophia of Hanover the next in line
Thank you Nieke, for the insight of bonnie Prince Charlie's life flora Mcdonald certainly saved his life and helped him to eventually return to France.
@@TheKingsofFrance morning Nieke, always a plesure to view and comment on your superb chanel, lovely to see you on Jon's chanel as I know you were tired.
And ... he was right and rightful. I was and I am always keen on this line of the family. Actually, I am for them! It’s SO sad that the Jacobites lost(. Thank you very much for this informative and interesting presentation!
I wonder why he didn’t start with the conquest of Ireland first. That would be a good Catholic base between France and England. Then try to turn the Scottish and the Welsh against England and have a two front invasion.
Some of my ancestors were jacobites. One of them served James II/VII at the Battle of the Boyne and followed him into exile where he died in poverty many years later.
It was actually Sweet William (William Augustus Duke of Cumberland)'s birthday one day before the battle of Culloden. Charlie hoped that the British soldiers would be drunk, but William Augustus, promised his soldiers he would celebrate after the battle. So during the battle the Royalist soldiers were sober. Charlie wanted to initiate a night attack before the battle but the soldiers practically got lost. When they finaly began the battle, Charlie's soldiers were tired and deprived of sleep and the royalist soldiers were fresh and battle ready.
And after having a few Rusty Nails, you can sing along to one of the many fine Jacobite songs available on RU-vid, such as Welcome Royal Charlie. Just be sure to have tissue on hand.
@@TheKingsofFrance My favorite Jacobite songs are on the Ex Cathedra channel (Welcome Royal Charlie; The Wee German Lairdie; Wha'll be King but Cherlie?) There are also a number of songs celebrating the French monarchy. Vive Henri IV is fun, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be De notre jeune Roi in honor of Louis XVII. To me it is the more poignant because of the tragic circumstances of the young king's life and because Louis XVII was the subject of your first video. Musically, the melody or tune is the same one used in other anthems such as God Save the Queen (United Kingdom), My Country, 'Tis of Thee (United States), and Grand Dieu Sauve le Roi (France). The melody has been ascribed to Lully, but this not seem at all certain to me.
Hi Anton, thank you for watching and commenting. I haven't done anything on Hugo Capet yet, but eventually I will be getting to him as I'm slowly working my way back when it comes to the French kings.
Clan McDonald's motto was "By sea or by land"Clan Douglas (the clan of Archibald Douglas Earl of Angus)'s motto was "Tender and True" Clan Wallace (William Wallace's family) motto was "For Liberty "
Just wanted to say I love your videos, how they are made and I appreciate the effort put into them. You also have a lovely speaking voice! Keep at it !
his exact name is Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Severino Maria Steward his brother`s full name is Henry Benedict Thomas Edward Maria Clement Francis Xavier
Oh, the Stuarts. Not a fan because of the happenings between Maria Stuart and Elizabeth I. I remember a song about Bonnie Prince Charlie taken by rowboat to Skye. I thought he was a child then. And I thought he was going to Sky=Heaven. In Finland we say "taivas", meaning both sky and heaven.
The Jacobites are so well known and beloved in the English-speaking world that I sometimes get a little salty on behalf of other armed reactionary movements, like the Vendeens and the Spanish Carlists.
