He may have been a gangster, but since his departure there hasn't been a social housing building program to be seen! No one has a chance of buying a private house or living in a council house these days.

I'm laughing at how this might've gone down on 'The Simpsons.' After C.J. finishes his speech everyone collectively says "Awww.." Then, a lone voice from a far corner of the room shouts "Let's take him back!" Then everyone cheers loudly. Then Mayor Quimby gets a unanimous show of hands in favour of C.J.'s installation as President-For-Life..

Served him self and his cronies to the best of his abilities would be more accurate. My mother always told me never to speak ill of the dead, so im going to shut up now.

The outstanding Irish politician in the decades since Lemass. Praters go on about him being a thief. Nonsense. He was given money and took it...quite rightly and why not? He was a visionary and highly competent leader. if only he was around now.

Awful shame Charlie didn't take a long walk off a short pier while he was cleaning out the coffers of the state to buy himself islands and helicopters!

@capetown99 £3 million is nothing compared to the income attracted to ireland through his innovation and hard work. Let an irish patriot rest in peace. Even Mick Collins lined his own pockets.

These resignation speeches are all the same.. I'd like to thank so and so for the great job they have done I'd like to thank A ,B and C for being such good sports. I'd like to thank the opposition for doing such a good job. Finally I'd like to thank myself and my colleagues for doing such a brilliant job. If everybody were doing so good how come these politicians have to keep resigning. I often wonder is there a template for these speeches. Shatter shouted the same ould shite recently.

@ballickmoyler Your having a laugh!. The definition of a Patriot is someone who devotes all their energy to the betterment of their countrymen. Old Charlie boy stole 250,000 off one of his friends, Brian Lenihan, money that was meant to get him a liver transplant in the US.

I liked Charlie...I met him briefly at a reception in Dublin Castle many years ago..He didn't suffer fools lightly ( including meself)..A T.D. from his own party visited him in his office in Dail Eireann..at the end of the meeting he couldn't find the door.."Mr. Haughey where is the door"..Charlie looked at him and said.."Jump out the f*****g window"..Of course Garret Fitzgerald thought he was of "flawed pedigree"..what ever that means.

Here's a classic at 1:20 "I have always sought to act solely and exclusively in the best interests of the Irish people." Now that's surely a winner of the Beverage Through the Nose Award. He was a corrupt, cronyist, conniving conman who caused a generation of Irish people to leave through emigration. (I was one of them but I'm back now). He bred a culture of corruption that we are going to find very hard to get out of. Spit on his memory. And on anyone who tries to glorify it.

@@brianplummy Celebrate his legacy: the downgrading of Fianna Fail from an all-powerful one-party government political machine to one that now has to mind its manners in order to form coalitions with lesser entities. That's if it can form a government at all. And all because of splits he caused in his party with people who just couldn't stomach him any more. If he "did the state some service" it was that. And I don't care how many people "like" it; it's true.
