Thanks for uploading - very interesting. Infuriating to a large degree to hear Haughey going on about "standards of propriety, especially for Ministers"..given what we know about him now. For the latter end of his political career he was literally being bankrolled week to week by rich businessmen and associates. What in a broader sense is more infuriating is that Haughey could have been our best ever leader, he had the inteligence, the vision, experience and the toughness. He chose at some point to go down the route of his lifestyle and corruption - while at the same time being a very effective politician. Gary Murphy's biography of him, while a tad soft given it was written with family approval, is a good read and makes one wonder what he could have done.

12:47 "we had a fairly biggish house" - even haughey had to smile at that one

This was during the period between his resignation and the McCracken tribunal when Haughey was fancied (and fancied himself) as an elder statesman, with his eye on the presidency.

I don’t think he wanted the presidency. The way he treated Patrick Hillary and Mary Robinson suggested he didn’t have very much respect for the office. In any case, he already had his own mansion and lots of land. Being President would probably have alerted the media even more to his way of living.

Its amazing how quickly political turmoil is forgotten but is dressed by media the time as the most extraordinary ever. Almost nobody remembers the crisis of 1994, described at the biggest in our lifetime by Pat Kenny

Michael O'Sullivan wouldn't be your typical Irish man. When Lemass became 'Prime Minister'. Taoiseach is the word you're looking for Michael.

Haughey is just wonderful here urbane and articulate...a side of him that was never stressed enough in all the postmortems...

When it comes to Haughey and money, one of the most spectacular episodes was actually yet to happen, even when this interview after retirement was aired. He went on to sell Abbeyville his home for 45 million Pounds. That must be about 100 million euro today. Today it lies idle having sold for 5 million some years ago.

A fascinating figure from nothing to a millionaire whatever way you look at it. Yes he was grotesquely crooked but how he navigated politically was amazing especially after the arms running. He deceived everyone, zero loyalty and calculated everything out. Then there was charm and intelligence to eventually him admitting everything he denied.

Sean Lemass was Ireland's greatest Taoiseach. Even though he was an elder statesman, he knew Ireland has to modernise. He gave us Ireland's first national television service. He abolished a lot of the stupid and outdated censorship of books and films. He tried to have a fair relationship with Northern Ireland. A truly great man. Shame his son in law didn't have the same principles.

The Irish looked at Haughey and simply saw themselves. He encouraged a forever war against 'Da Brits' which has failed them.
