I wrote a rap about Charles II of England to the beat of Mike Jones' song, "Back Then." A great supplement for AP European History or Western Civilization classes! At some point, I'll be posting a lecture on the Restoration to go with this.
Charles II of England was restored to the throne after the death of Oliver Cromwell and the failure of the Protectorate. Charles had spent several years in exile on the European continent before the English invited him back to rule as king. Although Charles was known as the "Merry Monarch" for being more easygoing than his father, he had some conflicts with Parliament over the issues of religious toleration, the lack of funds available to support his extravagant lifestyle, and whether his openly Catholic brother would be allowed to succeed him on the throne.
