I wrote a rap about Charles II of England to the beat of Mike Jones' song, "Back Then." A great supplement for AP European History or Western Civilization classes! At some point, I'll be posting a lecture on the Restoration to go with this.
Charles II of England was restored to the throne after the death of Oliver Cromwell and the failure of the Protectorate. Charles had spent several years in exile on the European continent before the English invited him back to rule as king. Although Charles was known as the "Merry Monarch" for being more easygoing than his father, he had some conflicts with Parliament over the issues of religious toleration, the lack of funds available to support his extravagant lifestyle, and whether his openly Catholic brother would be allowed to succeed him on the throne.

Charles II actually seems like a real class act. Not only because he was actually the only Stuart to have a brain I think it's pretty cool that he didn't divorce his wife even though she couldn't give him a son. I mean yeah he had a ton of mistresses but honestly if I hated every monarch that took mistresses I would basically hate all of them. The important thing is that it would have been better for him to remarry but it would've pratically ruined his wife's reputation and he stuck by her.

Could you please make a last-minute lecture video on the Stuart dynasty or the English Civil War for the AP Euro exam tomorrow? Thank you so much, your videos have helped me so much!

This is great! Before I listened to this I was having trouble understanding this part of my book, and the song helped me make the chronological connection between the English monarchs of that time. Thanks!!

THAT'S AWESOME! I made this rap for fun and am glad to hear it is helping someone. The English Civil War and the Stuarts are on my list for future video treatments.

Can someone kindly explain what he says in the hook? I've been trying for like a year but I just can't get a handle on it. I'm hearing "back then Brits didn't want me, now I'm high Prince all on me". Tom, help me out!

He is saying "back then brits didn't want me, now I'm hot brits all want me". This is because during the English civil war the English beheaded the King and Charles the 2nd was exiled to the Netherlands. When Oliver Cromwell died people had had enough of his puritanism and wanted the monarchy back, therefore Charles was "hot" again. Hope this helps.

you lost a bet, right? LSD slipped into your tea? Bathsalts? ....I know, you read the entire "Teachings of Don Juan" series by Carlos Castanada and spent the last month down south- experiencing shit and following crows, right? No, seriously. That was good shit. I'd like a lead... in case I ever want to relive some of my youth. I did some stuff man, I mean pretty weird and whacky, but you got me beat here.

Damn! I'm impressed. If you ever feel the need to do one of these on the French revolutionary government, I can recommend a suitable song - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s4l7bmTJ7j8.html
