Mayer (1799-1862) --- received his early musical education from his mother, followed by extended studies with John Field (1782-1837), with whom he continued to study after the family returned to Saint Petersburg after the Moscow fire of 1812. His first successful tour as a concert pianist in 1814 led him to Poland, Germany, Holland, and France, before he settled in Saint Petersburg in 1819. During another celebrated concert tour of 1845 he travelled through Scandinavia (where he became an honorary member of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm), Germany (Hamburg, Leipzig) and Austria (Vienna). Following the rise of Adolf von Henselt in Saint Petersburg, Mayer withdrew to Dresden in 1846, and died there.
Mayer was a busy and successful teacher who is supposed to have taught some 800 pupils in Saint Petersburg. He was reputed to have taken over the calm and musical (rather than virtuoso) technique established by Field. His most prominent pupils included the Russian pianist and composer Mikhail Glinka and Polish composer Filipina Brzezinska-Szymanowska. Mayer wrote almost exclusively for the piano, producing more than 350 works for the instrument.

I love being introduced to an obscurity with a great number of compositions. It's like being lead into a treasure trove.

This is rather atypical vs what I've listened from Mayer, so far. More subtle nuances, lesser open song, more introverted mood, very sophisticated harmonic turns, played on several tonalities of shadows and mists, while light occasionally shows up, rather shy, to not disturb the peaceful and quiet wave of the lake where I like to pose the perfect location where I'd listen again to this masterwork

i agree with these observations .. no virtuosic devices and a subtle overall feel

You are excellent. Your piano tone is outstanding. What brand/model of piano did you record in this song?

Somehow this reminds me of Austrian aristocratic era castle and the piano in the salon …. Almost like Luchino Visconti like Sweet but with a bit of shade looking into a misty future xoxoxo

Hey Gamma1734, I’m looking to start my own channel of my own music and was wondering what program you use to show the scrolling score. Any direction or insight in this matter would be highly appreciated.

It seems that Liszt’s Transcendental Etude no. 3 was inspired by this piece. XD

A sort of indifferent piece. Can’t help but think it lacks something, perhaps it needs moving along at a quicker pace.
@PianoScoreVids
@PianoScoreVids 3 года назад
maybe, but it's written as "lento" which is really pretty slow, he didn't write andante which they normally write for nocturnes
@holmespianotuning
@holmespianotuning 3 года назад
@@PianoScoreVids a pity because a slightly faster tempo might bring to life, then again it’s really just a parlour piece. Without wishing to be too critical.
@PianoScoreVids
@PianoScoreVids 3 года назад
right tempo choice is always a very difficult thing. since there are no crazy virtuosic passages here this piece is indeed amenable to higher tempo choices , but I think it also works in the tempo presented here.
@holmespianotuning
@holmespianotuning 3 года назад
@@PianoScoreVids at least it’s approachable and was presumably quite commercial? I wouldn’t mind printing it off and having a play through.

Totally disagree. The piece is totally meant to be slow and articulate. I just hate interpreters who speed up the melody part or the easiest portion where staying compsed gives all its beauty to the piece. Please just stay at playing Banjo.
