May 3, 1992 - In the dramatic conclusion of a knock-down, drag-out passing of the torch, New York Knicks forwards Xavier McDaniel and Charles Oakley teamed up to out-Dennis Rodman Dennis Rodman. McDaniel kicked things off with a nudge and some jawing. Oakley cleared the table with a solid early 90's playoff foul.
The 1991-92 season was the second year of the NBA's re-emphasis of the flagrant foul rule. Whereas the flagrant foul did technically exist prior to the 1990-91 season, it was a rarely utilized and lacked clarity. Following the Pistons' second championship, the league instituted a two-shots-and-possession consequence for potentially hazardous fouls.
In a win-or-go-home situation, the Knicks emerged 94-87 victors, eliminating the Detroit Pistons and moving on to face the Chicago Bulls.

The NBA on NBC was always great! Bulls, Knicks, Pistons, Suns, Magic and Pacers and all the rivalries amongst them made for some intense basketball. They played like every game mattered and in many cases it did. This in my opinion was the golden age of professional basketball.

Rodman was as tough as they came. Took a hit from oak, didn’t phase him, instead he acts like he cares about helping Oakley to his feet after he just tried hit him because he knows the refs are watching. What all of you, kinda missed, is rodman takes the hit and still had the strength to give him the extra should shrug after the initial hit to put oakley on his butt...while simultaneously lending a helping hand with the same shoulder that rodman used to bump him to the ground. That's world class athleticism, smarts, reactions time, strength, all wrapped into one motion that rodman possessed and oakley doesn't have...what I'm saying is, Oakley Not fighting back had nothing to do with him having something " to gain"....Oakley didn't fight back because he felt Rodman's stupid athleticism/strength/body control that put him on his butt and he knew he'd get his butt whooped. Rodman got the better of both X-Man and Oakley. Oakley went up to flatten Rodman in retaliation for what he did to X-man but ended up on his behind. Rodman had a wirey strength that frustrated the bullies of his time. It caused Daily to laugh his head off…lol Daily was like: ‘That’s why you guys will never be the Pistons..you guys don’t understand…we weren’t just thugs…You guys are a weak imitation of the Bad Boys…’

Like the Pistons Isaiah Thomas stated, lots of people see Rodman as a tough guy but he never threw a punch in his career.
@FuShengAlex
@FuShengAlex 3 года назад
Exactly. He was more about baiting people into losing their cool and getting people frustrated and thrown off of their games or getting themselves tossed for swinging at him. But he was a tough player to rebound like he did at his size.

In Oaks book he talks about why the league is so soft now. He basically says it's because the amount of money NBA players are making now. Back then you could decapitate someone and there's was a good chance you would even remain in the game and later get a $500 fine, and that was fair because most players didn't make much. If players did the same now they would get suspended and fined heavily.

Rodman had the smarts and reflexes to grab the net on the way down. Gave him leverage to help balance himself and redirect some of Oakley's energy back at him. Then still quick enough to offer his hand as to help him up. Very intelligent.

Rodman bullying the bullies - getting in their heads. Oakley went up to smash Rodman, but Rodman put him on his ass and got the call. Dailey on the sidelines, laughing his head off, while Riley was looking like a stressed version of Gordon Geko..😂

That's not a flagrant... Oak got ball. I think the refs made that call based on the temperature of the moment. As for X-mans foul, seems like The Worm sold that a bit to make sure he got it. What a beautiful match up. I'm gonna look for the full game now.

As I look at the Knicks back in the 90s, I've come to realize they didn't deserve a ring.. They were wannabe Pistons, copycats but they couldn't play like the Pistons... Jordan had finally got over the hump that was the Pistons so he and the Bulls had their numbers.. Mason and Oakley sucked as ball players...
