Just my two cents: Although Hamelin did not win the grand prize, the fact that many people in the world argued that he should have won, is actually no small feat. On a personal note, Cho deserved the grand prize (considering the whole competition), but Hamelin's performance of this concerto was the best I've heard aside from Zimerman (my gold standard of all Chopin interpreters). His take was a little fast than usual, but for the better effect. Also, pulling it off with a Yamaha, and making it sound way richer than with a Steinway, is actually amazing. I will always be a fan of Cho and Hamelin. 😊

I like this pianist. He seems to me an old sage soul. Such a nice quality in a young man. Very convincing grasp of this most poetic of piano concertos. Though the introduction was kind of slow for my taste I intuitively felt this musician had a unique concept and was not disappointed but began to get that “body aura”. I smiled as he smiled at the close of the first movement when the audience offered a quite notable punctuation. I never tire of this concerto for an eighteen year old soul who ventured into a realm of sonic adventure to produce one of the most famous utterances put to musical score. That Yamaha compares expressly to the traditional Steinway. I love its tone and how this gifted pianist evidently knew what best suited him. Brava! PWG

I wonder why no one ever chooses this concerto. In my opinion, it's way better than the E minor concerto.
@danielchoi4490
@danielchoi4490 7 лет назад
The E minor one is more refined and more difficult. Just because of its difficulty one would have a better chance at winning with the E minor. The only problem with it is that because Chopin wrote it after the F minor one (the numbers are swapped because of publication), he wanted something more refined, which he got at the cost of his more youthful expressions, so the E minor takes less interpretation than the F minor does. Also, the orchestra for the F minor absolutely sucks. I played it a couple times and I can't tell you how annoying it is especially in the second movement. It's just a tremelo for like 5 whole minutes. The melodies may be great but the harmonic balance is just bad and the execution was just bad as well. Chopin did way better at his orchestration in the E minor, despite it sounding very dry compared to the F minor. It was purposefully made simple to fit with the sound of the piano. Also, in the opinions of many professional pianists, the E minor is also much more virtuosic without sounding so. That's actually one of the big reasons why no one plays it except in the Chopin Competition. It sounds easy while being super hard so it's not worth the effort if the audience can't be wowed.
@Someonece
@Someonece 7 лет назад
Interesting. I've been listening to both for about a year, and place the piano score for the F minor up there with my top Chopin works to be honest. But about the orchestration... you are completely right. After listening to a lot of great Concertos such as Tchaikovsky's piano and violin, and Rachmaninoff, the orchestra in this Concerto barely does anything. But since it is Chopin, I am completely fine with it, and accept that he wrote the orchestra as more of an accompaniment, rather than making it one half of a whole. The piano score in the first movement is just so captivating (12:08 being one of my favorite parts). Not to mention how indescribably beautiful the Larghetto is. If you haven't already, Krystian Zimerman's recordings of both Concertos are two of my favorite music recordings of all time; he put so much love into them and drew out their full potential. No one has to compare these two concertos with Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Rachmaninoff. I see it as more of him being himself. Since he didn't care for orchestrating, and was obsessed with the piano. They also make me think of his letters and how he describes his love for Poland and the countryside, as well as just his youthfulness. While Tchaikovsky 1, and Rach 2 may be large scale quality concertos with very good orchestration and good piano scores, Chopin stands apart from them. The F minor will forever remain one of the deepest concertos I know.
@sabinhong0307

apparently, no-one's ever one with the F min and it has become something of a superstition among participants that in order to win you need to play the E min
@haelscheirs_haven
@haelscheirs_haven 4 года назад
@@sabinhong0307 If you look at the results/turnout of the 1st Chopin Piano Competition _on Period Instruments_ , you will find that _almost all of the finalists_ performed the F minor concerto, _and_ the top three (I believe there was a tie for the 2nd prize) performed this concerto. There's a chance that this performance by Charles Richard-Hamelin is what brought this concerto back to the competition stage. Ah, and I watched and heard him play in Toronto in 2019 from the third row of the Koerner Hall orchestra level near the middle (quite something to be a mere 10 or so meters from the person who taught you to love the B Minor Sonata), and as far as I can remember, his fourth ballade was _fantastic_ .

I mean this as a complete *compliment* to Mr Richard-Hamelin - his smiling demeanor reminds me of the depictions I've seen of JN Hummel at the piano, which seems nicely apt for this period and in consideration of Hummel's direct influence on Chopin...and it's also a nice contrast to the uber-serious mini-me Liszts, Paganinis and Berliozes running around the concert scene these days. (not taking away from anyone's artistry in my observation, btw; they're all 'poets', after all, so their personal self-expression is their thing - it's just a pleasure to see a contrasting emotional bearing in this music)

what a beautiful sound, amazing technique with nice approach to Chopin's Music! He is the Best of International Chopin Piano Competition 2015, absolutely!!!

My second perusal of this swift interpretation. I smiled as much as when first hearing it. While listening I thought how Chopin’s orchestration has been criticized. Well, judging from the greater to the lesser(not to mention the magnitude of this composer’s genius) it strikes me as a little trifling. I am certainly no musicologist but I can’t imagine what Chopin wrote being improved upon. In that beauty is it’s own excuse for being; Chopin’s concept, execution, and development of his themes and melodies; also this concerto remaining at the pinnacle of the repertory relegates all criticism to improper participle. I fell in love with this concerto when first hearing it 47 years ago and that love has abounded many times over the passing decades. “Music expresses wordless odyssey’s.” PWG

+Julia Chadrysiak The winners announced are Cho in first place, Hamelin in second, Liu in third, Lu in fourth, Yang in fifth(and he would be higher if he didn't screw up his last movement in the Concerto). I am sad that Nehring did not win the Concerto prize...I thought he was near perfect in every way.
