This study by Alkan is often cited as the first piece of music based on a train journey, with the steam engine chugging along, happy passengers riding, and complete with train whistles and sirens. Pf: Mark Viner
He simply follows the pedal markings of the score: where there is no pedal mark, there is no pedal! This allows a greater level of clarity and articulation.
Me too! I got tickets last year for Schaghajegh Nosrati playing Alkan Concerto op. 39 at Carnegie Hall, but then the concert was cancelled. This year, she was back, this time playing Symphony op. 39, but the tickets sold out too quickly 😭
Stunning performance of a very difficult concert study. Wonderful production, (Hamburg Steinway?) What a gifted pianist Mark Viner is to make this hurtling, out of control train sound musical, I have nothing but admiration for him and can't wait to hear future releases especially OP76 and OP 63.
