Isn't that the TRUTH? ;^> I watch videos like this all the time, and my brain actually starts to _absorb_ the various drives, and I recall them almost like my own memory. I experience the Google street-view shots and 3D cityscaping much the same way: even if I travel the actual paths myself, I recall the "virtual" travels with equal accuracy. SOOOO cool!!!
I think the complaints are he really didn't show Charleston. He showed the white picturesque part. I can trace my slave descendants back to johns island. I was born and raised in Charleston. This is not a true reflection of the city at all. He only showed what tourist want to see. I'd change the title to a tourist view or Charleston.
Everything about Charleston has gone down hill in the last 7-8 years . Quality of life, traffic, housing cost, cost of food, flooding, losing its charm due to the amount of people moving here combined the rate they’re showing up. Drinking water quality is very very poor. Harbor water quality is getting worse due to Constant sewage spill from an overwhelmed system. Enormous loss of trees and green space just to make room for over priced apartments and hotels. The list goes on and on.
That area has had alot of history between the american revolutionary war time when the British occupied Charleston to the civil war. Seems like a great city to tour.
You know, people have a right to live where they want. I live in Charleston half the year for work, and I believe I add to the community rather than take from it. I volunteer, I take an interest in local issues, I don't hurt anyone and I spend my money locally. Being from Seattle, I totally understand why you don't want Charleston to grow too big too fast, but not every outsider is a bad person, and not every native Charlestonian is virtuous. I'm saying this with love, but get over yourselves.
My brother left Australia after being scouted by UT for their golf program over 20 yrs ago...then he headed over to Carson-Newman ...then ended up as head coach at Charleston Southern...he met his wife and married and i have 2 beautiful southern belles as nieces.. Ive never had a chance to visit him and his heart will always belong in Perth but.what a beautiful place he now calls home 🐨🐨 great video 😊
I spent most of my life in the Charleston suburbs. Summerville, and North Charleston to be exact. I was born in N. Charleston my parents are from Ohio. My dad joined the Navy, and his first assignment was here. We moved every couple of years, but always found ourselves back in Charleston. I love it here, but with decades of uncontrolled growth it is a nightmare to get anywhere around here. I wish people will stop moving here we are full, and that is no joke.
I lived in charleston for 21 years, and still have family there. It’s a beautiful historic place! But to be fair, IT DOES HAVE GHETTOS ALSO, JUST LIKE MANY OTHER CITIES. North Charleston, Johns island, WEST ASHLEY , WHERE I LIVED , ALL HAVE GHETTOS. Downtown Charleston has slowly been gentrified, just like many other places in this country. And just like anywhere it has good and bad. Still a beautiful city though!!! Excellent video!!!
Ponderosa 2016 My family and I have lived in Charleston all our lives and still here. When you want to mention ghetto areas, Johns Island is not one of them, it’s a country area but not ghetto. There’s a difference
Wait, what about the peninsula itself? Ghettos? If you think that what is in Charleston, even the roughest parts of the tri county area aren’t THAT bad. Ghetto? Where are you from when you say something like that? Arizona? West Ashley? Ghetto? Good god man. The very worst parts of West Ashley are not like instant danger, as the real ghettos are in major cities. Get a grip. Your comment reeks of superficial observation. Sorry. Seriously. I apologize for the abrasive nature of my comment, but that pales in how offensive yours was. Bubble much?
@@samanthalinen4058 @Ponderosa2016 Samantha, I totally agree. I live on Johns (near Angel Oak) and it's a less commercialized James Island, and an upgrade from West Trashly- I saw that jokingly because Ashley is not as bad as it used to be. That Poderosa2016 person sounds like some Mt. Pleasant / Isle of Palms elitist.
I moved here a few years ago and yes there are the good and the bad parts of Charleston but overall I love it. I work downtown at Virginia’s on King and Kings Street is full of southern charm. I enjoy working there. Just visited parts of Summerville and it has built up a lot as well. Overall, it’s a beautiful place to visit and certain to settle down into but it’s up to you. I love it here!! Lots more to do. Thank you for this video
Nick Johnson I moved from California to north Carolina for work it’s not too far to move it was nice if you ignore all the bigots with confederate flag junk
andydguitar what the hell does any political leaning have to do with this horrifically uninformed video? For your information, and in spite of its history, Charleston is the most liberal city in South Carolina, and while that’s not saying much, it’s better than nothing. I mean, I guess I could live where you do now. Oh, the horror.
Andrew Higdon dude calm down most black people don’t like seeing that crap is all I’m saying and sadly I saw it a lot some people are just stuck in their own ignorance
Our daughter is studying there for a year, so we were lucky to have been able to spend both Thanksgiving and Christmas there. While it was very lovely being there at that time of year, It felt a little strange sitting outside having croissants and coffee at the end of December!
I moved to Cane Bay recently and Summerville from Massachusetts. I have to say I am in love with this place. Perfect school system And great neighborhoods. So much more affordable than Massachusetts
Nick Johnson jeez Nick, how do you define charming? I’m glad you are so perceptive, to see what is laid bare before you, as so many blind pointing out directions to other blind.
Thank you for a beautiful drive through one of my SC cities. Please visit Florence, Columbia, Aiken, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Greenville to name a few. South Carolina (SC) is a wonderful place to live and vacation. Thanks again.
@@NickJohnson If you are a history buff, you will enhance your visit by visiting our many historic sites. The battles of the Cowpens and Kings Mountain are located in the upstate. Just 20-30 miles apart. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cowpens en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kings_Mountain
Nice video Nick. This is probably my favorite (Drive) videos. I love history and this place definitely has it. I appreciate you narrating it a little more than others you did. Make sure you make it up to Chicago soon. Alot of history in there too with prohibition and depression era. Like the Biography Theater still stands almost perfectly persevered where one of my heros John Dillinger got gunned down by the FBI in July 22 1934.
What a great video! I havent been back in Charleston for years- if anything its more beautiful than i remember. Thank you Niick- the video and the music. Mr. Johnson- you sure have talent!
This is a trip....... I'm a dump truck driver in charleston and surrounding areas so it is fun to look on the internet and see and recognize areas I drive through all the time.
I love living here! I moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma and it's like living in a movie everyday, it's almost always beautiful and the people are usually very nice. A bit more expensive than we are used to but just as long you aren't living in Charleston proper you probably aren't going to pay any more than living most other cities.
LeoNation89, why wouldn't you want to move there? I'm close to getting out of California and Charleston is on my short list of places to move. And no, I will NOT be wanting where I move to become California. I'm leaving it to leave it, so don't worry folks.
Why would someone want to show the bad parts of Charleston? Every city has its desirable and less desirable areas. I live in Charleston and consider our city one of the most picturesque cities in the world.
@@cocotaveras8975 Cheaper than California but thats not saying much. Area floods from time to time. Has alot of snakes, cockroaches, etc. Parking costs and enforcement are ridiculous. But it sure has its beauty. Just make sure you get the best flood/hurricane insurance and you will be good. It does have some ghetto areas to the nw. Its a place to visit but not to live for most.
Andrew Higdon Usually the suburbs of big cities are nice and don’t have snakes or roaches. I grew up in the suburbs in the Northeast and never saw a snake and only saw roaches when I went into the actual city.
Thank's Nick! I remember shopping along the strip with so many stores & great food! I also remember (SOB) thats South of Broad :) ! Miss that place! I stoped looking in Florida, & focusing on South Carolina! Hope to be ready by 2024 if all goes well! 🙏🙏🙏
I have family in Charleston so it's nice to see this side even if my family and I never get to live here. I know my ancestors roamed these streets and played a huge part of its existence today. As in most nicer areas my family do not take time to frequent these area as they feel unwelcome but each time I visit, I make sure to roam the area where my ancestors were brought, sold and worked. Thank you for a closer glimpse.
Been in Charleston a number of times....trucker......once right after hurricane Hugo...snapped off those tall trees about half way up.....lost a lot of them then.....can sense the history of the place...
Beautiful-looking city, you picked a wonderful day for the drive too. It'd be great to see you do a Seattle driving tour (on a similarly nice day of course) if ever you go up there
This is the same tour that I was given when I got suckered into accepting a job here 14 years ago. Biggest mistake of my life. The "southern charm" here is just a face mask covering the ugliness of the people here. So much arrogance and entitlement. The infrastructure can't handle the growth. All those million dollar homes get flooded out regularly by king tides and storm surges. Tourism makes it unbearable for the locals. I could go on for days. Yes, it is extremely beautiful and full of history, but I wouldn't recommend living here.
Hot as Hades in the summer months with all the 90 degree water around it. Prefer the cooler temps way up north in Wilmington and Raleigh :). I visit Chucktown 1-2 times a year when I need some Lowcountry food and to trip over cobblestones.
I was planning to take a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, the Palmetto state is truly gorgeous in its own way, full of history and charm, the winters are comfortable a bit more then where I currently live which is Yorktown,Virginia, also I love all the Sabal palmettos, and your videos are amazing 😁🙏🏾
Charleston SC is very beautiful, but I hated it! There is absolutely no middle class in this town. You are either very well off, or very poor. Believe me if you are poor or black in Charleston SC, you know your place!! And they want it way below everyone else!!!!!!!! The most openly prejudiced city I know!
I love Chucktown. I have family there and visit often. Gets really hot in summer and downtown has a constant smell of urine. I highly recommend a visit to one of the local plantations and also make sure you go see Angel Oak. A tree that will blow your mind.
Yes it is a small town, South Carolina have no big cities, not even close, just a few big towns. But, you can't tell some people from Charleston that they live in a small town. The tourist parts are nice.
@@danielobrien1 I don't think that way because I have lived around the world, and in many big cities, so I know what a big city feels like. Washing is a big city, especially by SC standards, and many big cities in Europe don't have skyscrapers. Charleston is growing, it's now the largest city by population in the state.
@@willrobinson4976 yeah i agree I was talking about people in america equate big cities that way. But it is a city nonetheless population wise. I'm from South Carolina and we specialize in small towns. Charleston isn't a small town. Small towns are literally no stoplight and 3 streets and where the local preacher holds more political power than the mayor, that is if it has a mayor 😂. As far as europes cities and the layout goes that's why people say charleston and savannah are America's most European cities.
I've lived in Los Angeles and their actual cities population would be similar if they didn't count every county in SoCal. Lol like quite literally the greater Los Angeles area is made up of 30 counties included in their metropolitan statistical area. The largest being San bernadino
My family goes to Charleston every 2 years. The horse drawn tours are kinda expensive but worth it in my opinion if you ever visit. You can learn alot about the history.
