Thank you Jamie. It's all part of the process for me to learn the history of jazz and the stories behind the greats. It's tragic that so many of them ended their lives prematurely. Great video.

Thank you mister Anderson! Happy New Year! Mister Parker was awesome master of improvisation. I really love Bird music. That music is magic, beauty and super difficult to learn!

Frankie 1 - here’s a fun Steve Marcus fact. If you listen to Half A Heart (written by Gary Burton) from his 1968 album Tomorrow Never Knows it’s almost certainly where the Baker Street riff was taken from. Without any credit!

Hi Jamie, really liking your channel, some excellent stuff. Like your approach and enthusiasm. Just one thing: Hope you have a picture of Tubby on your wall 😃. I am a beginner at 52 and love tbe british jazz of the 50's to 70's. Keep up the excellent videos.

Lol! I'm afraid I don't actually have a picture of Tubby! That's not to say how great he was though of course. He was one of the true greats. I've just gone with the people who have personally influenced me the most and I've only got so much wall anyway lol Glad you're enjoying the channel. Check out the other sax legends in the series too... (Got Sonny Rollins coming soon too) ru-vid.com/group/PLBRGEAheQrply395t4YiiCxWLeVSOf9NP

I would have really 'dug' seeing Bird play his 300 BPM version of "Koko" with Igor Stravinsky in the audience at Birdland ,, as quoted from the book "Jazz Modernism" by Alfred Appel Jr. "He interpolated the opening of Stravinsky`s "Firebird Suite" Into his second chorus as though it had it had always been there , a perfect fit , and then sailed on with the rest of the number. Stravinsky roared with delight pounding his glass on the table, the upward arc of the glass sending it`s liquor and ice cubes onto the people behind him, who threw up their hands or ducked. The hilarity of the audience didn`t distract Parker, who, playing with his eyes wide open and fixed on the middle distance never once looked at Stravinsky. The loud applause at the end of "Koko" stopped in mid clap, so to speak, as Parker again without a word segued into his gentle version of "All The Things You Are". Stravinsky was visibly moved."

I had no idea there was a movie by Clint Eastwood. I hope it’s on Netflix as this story sounds fascinating. Why yard bird I wonder? Was it a prison thing from getting in trouble ?
@GetYourSaxTogether
@GetYourSaxTogether 4 года назад
from wiki? "There are many conflicting stories as to how he got the name. One story is that he would listen to bands from the yard outside a club. Another is that he loved eating chicken, which was also called yardbird" Who knows! J:-)
@YannsKitchenUK
@YannsKitchenUK 4 года назад
Get Your Sax Together kind of ironic he would have to listen outside cos they wouldn’t let him in a club named after him. Really can’t wait to see the film but Netflix don’t seem to have it on yet. May just have to grab it on DVD.

@@YannsKitchenUK The version I know is that he was in the back of the car when someone accidentally ran over and killed a chicken, whereupon he said they should pick up "that yardbird" so they could cook and eat the evidence.

The film...OMG...it's a fascinating but so-frustrating mess. Besides being out of chronological order, it's full of curious factual errors and even more full of confusing composite characters. And at times it seems to over-estimate his level of celebrity. (E.g: you'd think they'd know he only ever made news headlines by dying in The Baroness's apartment!) But even if he doesn't look or talk like Bird, Forest Whittaker gives an heroic performance throughout - and there is some exceptional scriptwriting (e.g: that very quotable scene between Bird and a mentor figure whom he allegedly caught up with in Paris, or the beach scene where Dizzy reprimands him in his own peculiar way for being unprofessional/disorderly, or for that matter those scenes where he and Chan are arguing about his addictions and his infidelities, but only talking in metaphors/projections). AND...musically the film has some then-novel Parker remixes - dropping his solos into newly recorded music by Monty Alexander & Co. (Not many "obvious" solos, either: the Eastwood/Niehaus team were rather over-fond of the Rockland Palace session and the Tristano tapes).

Unfortunately, some of the info is wrong. The coroner stated Parker's liver looked like the one of an alcoholic in his 50s-60s, but he wasn't estimated to be that old. Also, he grew up in Kasas City, Missouri, not in Kandas City, Kansas (that's only where he was born).

FWIW - we should clairfy that the November 45 epic date was Parker's first as leader, whereas his first proper features on disc were those Gillespie sides earlier that year.

I don't know why he picked that Tea For Two-tinged lick when there are other, more uniquely Parker-ish, ones he could have picked...in that same solo!
