"The Trap" (also known as "Charlie Chan In the Trap), is a 1946 crime film directed by Howard Bretherton. The main premise is two members of a show troupe are murdered, and Charlie Chan is called in to solve the case.
This was Sidney Toler's final film and his final one as the detective Charlie Chan, his 17th of the series. Stricken with cancer during his last few films, Toler was so physically weak during filming that he could hardly walk or say his lines coherently.
---
Directed by Howard Bretherton, produced by Herman Schlom, written by Earl Derr Biggers, starring Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan, Victor Sen Yung as Jimmy Chan (as Sen Yung), Mantan Moreland as Birmingham Brown, Tanis Chandler as Adelaide Brandt, Larry J. Blake as Rick Daniels (as Larry Blake), Kirk Alyn as Sgt. Reynolds, Rita Quigley as Clementine, Anne Nagel as Marcia, Helen Gerald as Ruby, Howard Negley as Cole King (Impresario), Lois Austin as Mrs. Thorn, Barbara Jean Wong as San Toy, Minerva Urecal as Miss Weebles (the Housekeeper), Margaret Brayton as Madge Mudge, Bettie Best as Winifred, Jan Bryant as Lois and Walden Boyle as Doc Brandt.

It was Warner Oland that was deathly sick with Cancer, he played Charlie Chan first, and then died. Sidney Toler took over to play Charlie Chan, after Warner Oland passed away from Cancer.

@@chirelle.alanalooney8609 This film was released on November 30, 1946. That means it was probably filmed during the early summer of 1946. Sidney Toler was already sick with cancer. By November he was bedridden and he died in February, 1947. This was his last film. Warner Oland died in 1938, of bronchial pneumonia.

It's a pleasure to see Malibu so underdeveloped. I miss the beaches of the sixties where mother nature ruled, and man made buildings were scarce. I also want to commend "Birmingham" for his ability to use facial expressions to convey, fear, surprise, and intrigue. He is hardly mentioned in the comments, yet here he had more screen time than number 2 son!

I have to respectfully disagree. I'd put this Chan film on the bottom rung tier of Toler's Charlie Chan films. Sidney Toler has ALWAYS bn my FAV Chan actor but have grown to appreciate & really like Warner Oland's depiction as well. Nonetheless, this particular Chan film can't hold a candle to ANY of the Chan films produced by FOX, for example. And, it pales in comparison to others produced by Monogram. Long live Charlie Chan!

I lived in Malibu next to Liberace in Big Rock. He died that February. He looked fine & always polite with his many dogs. Speaking of dogs that's where Malibu is now. Went to the dogs. I lived in the 80's on private beach a few years then up too Malibu Bay Club which really is in Oxnard. What a bunch of creeps in that complex. I'm very kind but they think they run your life & everyone else's. Hated me because I had a beautiful condo. How stupid. Oh well. In a high rise in Long Beach & love it. It's the old LA. I moved to in1982. Respectfully Francis. Just be nice to everyone. LA was beautiful with 18 million nice folks. Rent was normal & now it 45 million & do not walk in street they'll run you over & keep going. Greedy, selfish wanna beds & they're nothing. I'm a designer & did many star homes by word of mouth. $100,000.000.00 was David Foster,'s & the nicest wife Lynda Thompson Jenner Foster. Bruce or Caitlins ex . I waited on Bruce & her at Rex's Fishmarket in 80's. Bruce was handsome & normal. Who knows but the nicest people they all were. I never hung around. I’ve read many of the comments in it and it did seem that Sydney Tolar was ill as I watch his performance. I love all the Charlie Chan movies that I’ve seen so far but this is the weakest one, Charlie Chan was always polite and gracious and he was quite abrupt in this movie. It was the script and how it was written but Charlie Chan‘s personality was changed in this movie. And I kind of got lost with the plot and really what happened. It is a weak movie but for Charlie Chan fans, it’s still enjoyable enough to see Sidney Toler.

A fine non-"woke" film which has not been banned by the woke terrorists who see everything in their shallow world view. I have purchased a different set of Chan videos because of the woke meatheads who want to change the American scene into a place which will bore normal people to death. Mantan Moreland was so clever in analyzing what the biggest audience would accept in a Black comedy actor's role and brought his version of Black comedy to the screen in an invisible way. His depiction is just right for the time.

I'm a big Charlie Chan fan and own every film available (other than the 4 lost Oland movies and the silents). I enjoy Toler's early Fox films a lot and even some of the later Monogram ones. This one is really hard to watch. He's very sick and very frail. But even if he wasn't this is a BAD movie. Just awful from start to finish. The humor which has been done over and over falls flat. For Toler's determination to finish the film when he could barely walk and speak most people graciously overrate this with 2 - 2 1/2 stars but it's a 1 and a sad thudding end to Toler's legacy. From the terrible script to the sets to the overacting by much of the cast this one should be skipped. The plots and scripts would get no better in future films but all of them are still better than this one even with the worst Chan (of movies -- no one beats J. Carrol in that dubious honor) ever I could sit through all of them and find so much more to like. I know I'll offend some/most. I have great respect fo the character and for Sidney Toler's career. Maybe he needed the money. Even in 1946 medical care for terminal illnesses could be devastatingly expensive. It would have been better for this one to be tabled and for Mr. Toler to be home with friends and family than to go out this way. Deep down you know I'm right.

The Press agent exhibits one of the most often cited reasons for crime. Money. Haven't we all heard it said if you want to find the real culprit "follow the money"? Long before this was another oft quoted saying "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil". Unfortunately. this movie continues Hollywood's long standing tradition in casting black characters negatively, and all for laughs.

I loved Hattie McDaniels comeback to those who criticized her playing a maid in GWTW. She said she would rather earn $700 a week playing a maid than $7 being one. The truth is folks there were black maids and elevator operators and doormen just as there were white ones but no one mentions those. Oh should I have said doorpersons? Just another way of showing how evil the killer is in the story... Much like in the Betty Boop "Baby Be Good" episode where the naughty kid _bullies a puppy_ in the imagined sequence, before making more chaos and getting chased by a lion.

As much as I like Charlie Chan movies this one is the worst written and acting I have ever seen.

Maybe you haven't seen "The Chinese Ring," then. This one's still more enjoyable to me than "The Chinese Ring," which 1: is a remake of a Mr. Wong movie, 2: is a late Monogram company movie, 3: Monogram was a cheap company, 4: "The Chinese Ring" is the first one that Roland Winters starred in, 5: Winters didn't really come across as an old and seasoned detective to me in it. To be fair, though, "The Chinese Ring" is still higher budget and easier to watch than the Mr. Wong original, and it's mostly better than the original, IMHO. Also, Winters seemed OK in "The Golden Eye." I still have to see the other 4 Charlie Chan movies he was in, though. And I know that another one of those is also a remake of a Mr. Wong movie, but the others shouldn't be.

What commercials? Am located in the USA....Mississippi. NONE on my end. NEVER had any on RU-vid.

The commercials are put in by RU-vid, not the video uploader. The only way to get rid of them is to pay for RU-vid premium.

Sgt Reynolds is played by Kirk Alyn who was the original "Superman" in the 1948 movie serial.
