A treasury agent on the trail of counterfeit money confides to fellow ocean liner passenger Charlie Chan that there have been two attempts on his life.
I watched Charlie Chan when I was a young child. Fell in love with the movies when I saw them in the store I started buying them. Had them for a long time until a family member stole things from me. Glad to see them again. 😄😄
Haven't watched contemporary movies or TV shows for years! Love Charlie Chan and other classic movies and TV series that I grew up watching. I have RU-vid premium with no ads (well worth the price) so I hardly ever watch anything else.
Love Charlie Chan movies, I have watched them over and over again. Sidney Toler is my favorite, but Warmer Oland does a great job also. Charlie is so cool, ya gotta love him.....
Tolerance, patience, wisdom. Much to be learned from watching Charlie Chan movies. And that number one son never could get one over on his father. Great stories. Thank you for showing them.
That isn't number one son that is number two son Jimmy who in a much later filmed in this one is basically getting drafted and going into the military it was the time of the second World War.
That's awesome... wish we could go back sometimes ? Seems like my little ones missed out on so much goodness and with all the BAD that's out there today we can use as much goodness and we can find ... thanks for sharing
Greetings from a fellow sexagenarian. On weekends, I got to stay up late with my dad and watch war movies. All of my favorite movies are still in black and white.
Not one time watching these films ( I'm 65) did I ever feel racism or derogatory thoughts about anyone! Wasn't raised that way either. I wish we all would have learned to be better than we were in the past. Every ethnic group contributed to our history and we should be richer for it. Never destroy these old films. We always learn something from them.
Ethnicity is the new "PC" word for race. Blacks and whites are of different races, whereas Slavs and Spaniards are of different ethnicities, but of the broad European stock. Japanese and Chinese are of different ethnicities, as they belong to the same East Asian stock.
And let’s not forget the awesome wardrobes! Beautiful gowns that gave us an imagination grace and natural beauty and Tux and suits very becoming to the MALES especially the Fedora hats! When people were civilized for the better! I can remember those days and they weren’t so bad!
Three Classic African Americans Who Should Not Be Forgotten For Their Hollywood Careers----- Willie Best, Dudley Dickerson, Mantan Morelan-- R.I.P. Brothers !
It snowing outside. We have about 6 inches so far with some sleet. Can't go anywhere. Roads are too bad. So, I'm kicked back and binge watching Charlie Chan movies. After these I'll probably binge watch Sherlock Holmes the rest of the day.
They taught a generation that people drop dead immediately when shot or knifed and no need to get a doctor. These detective movies were so dark, half of it would make a better radio show than a movie. The Nero Wolfe Mystery tv series was much better than this, with Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin, and a group of actors who played different parts in each episode as they would in the theater, very smartly written, captured the era very well. It's too good. Keeps me awake. :)
My sister , and I ,back in the late 40’s early 50’s watching these old ,Charlie Chan ,movies with Sydney Toler, & his number 1 son. Enjoyed them ....then , enjoy them now., in my 80’s, my sister is dead., but I still remember, having good memories ,of her and I ,setting by that small tv...watching these mysteries.....
a great group of comedians who deserve your heartfelt praise, Tyrone, and from me, too. i absolutely love Mantan and his partner- they were freaking hilarious. but i think you should have included Lincoln Perry. i don’t think he deserves his bad rep at all. he was the first - he paved the way for others. and he made a fortune. glad to see he was speaking normally in this movie - and he got the last shot!!! 🎬🎰🎼🌹🌱 n.b. i’ve don’t think i’ve ever seen Charlie Chan shoot a gun at someone before.
ANOTHER, great Charlie Chan movie!!! One I have never seen/heard, before now👍!!! Alot of good, side characters here, like Willy Best. The preverbal comic, icon, that's in many films, back then. Richard Elliot also, who's in numerous films and TV shows. He's the man sitting on the porch, iterating "Youth is wasted, on the wrong people", to Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, in"It's A Wonderful Life". Plus, he was Mayberry's, first mayor. I guess I'm slipping, I didn't spot the guy, dressed like a woman🙄, nor did I figure out, the killer(s).
Wikipedia: By the end of 1946, age and illness were affecting Toler. Diagnosed with cancer, the 72-year-old Toler was so ill during the filming of Dangerous Money (1946) and Shadows over Chinatown (1946) that he could hardly walk.
A grest Charlie Chan movie. Unfortunately, Sidney Toler was very ill, fighting Cancer in 1946. However he still managed to act in several movies in 46 -- among them, this one and Shadows over China Town. After passing away in 1947, Charlie Chan's role was assumed by Roland Winters.
@Gary Carpenter people always say he's a "stereotype" I don't know what's wrong with being intelligent, refined, and wise. Hell yoda must be a stereotype by that logic
@@garycarpenter2980 You are totally right. Max Baer Jr happened to be a good actor, his career becoming marked for that role. Even Connery became marked by his 007 role -- although he managed to relaunch, to overcome that burden.
I loved watching these movies with my dad in the 60s. I think I just gave away my age. I bought 2 sets of the films - one for myself and one to gift to a local nursing home. Warner Oland was a super Charlie Chan and it is to bad he passed away after making only the first six movies. Sidney Toler was also very good and helped memorialize the character. My least favorite to play Charlie Chan was J. Carrol Naish from the tv series was ok but not nearly as good as the other two.
After Toler came Roland Winters ("The Golden Eye")....he was a bit stale, bland, no defining characteristic. He pales in comparison to Oland & Toler. Check out aforementioned film. AVAILABLE now on RU-vid.
Hi Karen, That's when I was watching these great movie too. Do you happen to know what Warner Oland died of, or died from? I always thought he did a great believable job of being Charlie Chan. I also liked Sidney Toler too. I think they both did a very fine job of playing the part of Charlie Chan!
@@chirelle.alanalooney8609 Warner Oland died of Pneumonia in August 1938, which was probably worsened by his Smoking and Alcoholism. He didn't want to be on the set in January 1938, he walked out, so the movie they were working on turned into "Mr. Moto's Gamble," and so the movie has Keye Luke as Lee Chan, Charlie's "#1 son," in it. "Mr. Moto's Gamble" was released *before* Oland died, though.
Love these! Bowery Boys too. These classics survive without car crashes, skimpy clothes on wanna be s , oh and the show you are cool saying the m-fword or f word with a shaved head and limited intelligence. If they remade these all that would be put in. Glad we can see these intact.
@@garycarpenter2980 I enjoy these movies a lot but they pale compared to the 5 original CC novels written by Earl Derl Biggers. It's hardly likely that they could ever recapture the atmosphere of these original movies, bur look at the "life" of Sherlock Holmes who is 40-50 years older than CC and has been successfully "re-invented" several times since the 40s Rathbone-Bruce series. Who would you get to play Charlie?
Wouldn't it be nice if you could just sit back in your easy chair and enjoy this movie? You can't, of course, as you have to get up every 2-6 minutes to click on "Skip Ads." Can you imagine if network TV shows had this many commercial breaks?? No one would watch.
Plus, unlike standard commercials, the ads pop up randomly in the middle of the dialogue just as I'm getting into the show, and the volume practically wakes the whole neighborhood. I wish i could just fall asleep to these shows without youtube needing me to actively tend to it so much 😅
People need to grow thicker skins yes they might find some of this stuff offensive but they need to grow thicker skins. You just couldn't make these movies nowadays without offending somebody.
@@williamwoody7607 I prefer nationalities to play themselves in movies, but until recently that was not allowed. I just think he was less insulting. I know it is best to boycott those movies,, but I don't. The best I can do is not watch the Kung Fu TV series out of respect for Bruce Lee.
Use to watch the Charlie Chan series and these Charlie Chan movies all the time as a child and thought they were strange because every Asian kid in my neighborhood and their parents spoke better English than me and my parents. I could not figure out why Charlie talked so strangely (Never said I was a bright kid).
That's impossible. You're asking a defiled, despoiled 'hollycrap' to actually go back in time. They cannot, any more than you or I could. We can only enjoy what RU-vid gives us until the "cancel-culture" takes it all down. Best get ready for the Rapture!
"Hasty man can also drink Tea with Fork." I was working with a Belt Sander, and this quote came to mind - I was taking forever to sand the thickness of a thin piece of plastic down, I thought of the quote, then I went and got a piece of wood from the other side of the room. My thumbs weren't getting too hot after that.
I used to love Saturday afternoons Charlie Chen Tarzan with Wiseman Johnny quest on Saturday mornings there's a lot of fun growing up I'm proud to say I'm glad to Charlie Chan is now on RU-vid to be able to watch and every one of his movies I thank you so much God bless stay safe from the coronavirus amen
Roland Winters, the third CC, was 'all right', but not thrilling. Warner Oland, the first CC, was very good in what he did. *But Sidney Toler, the second CC, was THE definitive Charlie Chan. Fidelity to duty, loving care for his children, sharp Confucian logic, he did it all. I could well imagine him as a neighbor.
@@garycarpenter2980 RW portrayed a rather bland, a bit stale version of CC. Had no real defining characteristic. Check out "The Golden Eye" for yourself. AVAILABLE now via RU-vid. It's FREE!
@@franklanders7224 Mid '80s Sunday noon Mystery Theater featuring CC, Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes, Bulldog Drummond... then the horror show of Cub's baseball.
I enjoyed the movie, not the ads. I see many comments about far too many ads. True. It kept me from focusing on the movie, since I had to be prepared to quickly hit the Mute button, then "skip" the commercials as soon as I could. One way to avoid this would be to download the vid , then watch it. If that is possible.
@@jharris0341 Thank you for that suggestion. Just yesterday, I had to get Windows Updates, and they gave me the new Edge browser, replacing the old version that came with this.
That's an awesome post ! Reminds us of a much better and simpler time ... my wife says I'm an old soul, maybe born in the wrong decade? Oh well ... what can you do
charlie chan every day and charlie chan to go to sleep by every night charlie chan and sherlock holmes basil rathbone is the only sherlock holmes for me
Lee Larson. There are a lot more commercials in this one, but you can watch without commercials if you roll the entire film to the end & then push the replay sign. This works about 99% of the time. You have to push the timing all the way through to the finish, then push the rewind signal. It's easy & free.
I must say how great would it be if PBS would show movie's like the one l just watch. For! Their are many people that still remember Mr. Charlie Chan moive's. This also would be great for the younger generation to get a look at what we saw back in the day thank you so very much. Hope to see more if l'm able to find them. Remember to wear you masks and stay safe.
I do not expect PBS to show any of this type of movie, PBS is too "politically correct", so we will have to look for them here. But masks? No thanks. That is a huge psyop. No one needed to wear masks this whole year. They did more harm than good.
@@amandawilcox9638 Who is the "she" you refer to? The commenter? I believe that is a male, but regardless, she did not give a "blessing", she reminded people to "stay safe". I don't need a reminder for that. The mask tyranny must end.
There are no big stars in this low budget film. But enough solid, recognizable character actors. Many, early in their career. EX: The murdered Govt. Agent was in a lot of 50's TV westerns. And John Harmon who plays Eddie the hotel clerk on The Rifleman. And a bum on Star Trek episode "City on the Edge of Forever". (Who disintegrates himself with Dr McCoy's phaser.) If this was a Columbo episode, we would already know, in the first 5 minutes, who the killer is. Then, according to Fran Drescher (episode of The Nanny), we spend the rest of the hour trying to figure out which of Falk's eyes is the real vs. glass one.
