Wonderful quality for this silent film and I so enjoy these as we can see real living of this time; Chaplin was a comedic icon and cannot believe he did all his stunts without injury.

The brilliance of silent films, and why Chaplin was a global superstar, was that physical comedy (as well as drama, pathos, terror, horror, mystery, etc) and focusing on facial expressions and on body language, is that actors can be understood regardless of the country; there is no language barrier, no need for translated subtitles, and therefore accessible to people world-wide.

Charlie Chaplin was a screen idol like no other before or since. He directed, wrote acted and in, some cases, composed the music of his films, a genuine "auteur" as it is called in the industry (or in other words, he was the creative genius behind his works). As an example of how seminal Chaplin's films are to the craft of motion pictures his "Little Tramp" figure is as familiar an icon of cinema as Mickey Mouse.

my 3 favorite silent comedians were Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton. They were all masters at their craft. I would also include Laurel and Hardy, but most of their surviving work is from the early days of "talkies"

Chaplain, Keaton and Lloyd were the kings of stunts back in the silent days. If they could see it they could do it. The modern stunt people can't even touch those masters.
@sandybruce9092
@sandybruce9092 3 месяца назад
Harold Lloyd did so many stunts by himself that would be considered crazy even for a stunt man today! I’m still amazed today!
@jennifergarrett6809

@@sandybruce9092 all 3 of these men were OG stuntmen. Keaton in The General sitting on the cowcatcher of the train. Chaplain hopping onto moving trolleys like he's stepping into a house. Lloyd setting up cars to drive in circles while he hops out and back in like it's sitting still. These men created the basis for what our modern performers do today.

I kid you not, I had to watch this video 3 times, as I kept watching the Chaplin movie and completely missing every word you said. 🤣 However once I was able to focus on your narrative, I learned so much! Chaplin earned his status as an icon and I look forward to more videos from you focusing on the work of this great man. I mean how cool is that? One of the greats (Rick Nineg) highlighting another one of the greats (Chaplin). Mind blown! 🤯

I would contend that while Chaplin was first with the mirror bit, Max Linder's mirror sequence in "Seven Years Bad Luck" is the best.

The full "mirror " gag was first done by the French comic Max Linder - it was imitated, almost move for move, by the Marx Brothers years later. Chaplin never did a full mirror gag, though he did do a gag about being confused by mirrors.

At 3:24 you see something we don't do anymore. There are a series of wires strung across the second floor. Department stores used to have baskets and when a sale was made, it'd go up to a higher floor and someone might make change sending it back down to the floor. I'm not sure if they wrote the receipt or not.

Actually, not that bad at all. They use title cards as subtitles, which I did remove for this video. It’s actually very enjoyable.
@stuartm6069
@stuartm6069 3 месяца назад
actually silent films aren't bad at all. The actors would convey a lot of emotion through their acting and facial expressions. Chaplin was a master at it. Scenes from City Lights where the Tramp is helping a blind flower girl don't need dialogue to understand what is happening.
@MsPhotoclick

That's where the acting comes in. To express ideas non verbally.
