Met Charlie when he was working for Anson packaging, a gentle giant and a gentleman, his stories were absolute enthralling, I remember him giving me a photograph of Denis Law and him shaking hands before an FA cup tie, he knew I was a big united fan, an absolute pleasure to meet and get to know him
Charlie would have made a superb centre-forward. In fact Len Shackleton wrote that Hurley was "The biggest waste of Centre-Forward potential he had ever seen". The great pity is that there is hardly any footage of Hurley playing. I did hear that a TV company wiped all the football tapes of the Sunderland matches to use them for something else. That now looks like pouring extraordinary football history down the drain. Thanks for the memories Charlie! The greatest player I have ever seen. Charismatic and larger than life!
I recall when as a young lad growing up in Dublin in the late 50s early 60s I used to always go to Rep Of Ireland internationals ay Dalymount Park and Charlie was my hero then. Most of our players then were from around the Dublin area with the odd Corkman thrown in. At one game I attended Charlie came to the touchline to collect a ball for a throw in saying to the ball boy "Gis it 'ere" , well I was cetainly confused as I had read he was a Corkman and never heard a Corkman with an accent like that!. It was years later I discovered he was born in Cork but grew up in London's East End .......A Cockney Corkonion !
@@samrichardson9487 I suppose I would describe him as an old fashioned centre half, dominating and controlling the the defence winning a lot in the air. The closest player I can think of in modern times would be Adams when he played for Arsenal.
Aye Charlie the loves grown and grown ,I can't see any other player make a mark like you did ,not just me as youngster but as an oap now ! They/we still sing your name yet 🤗you made a million sunland fans so proud they called you king Charlie ! Nowts changed niva will either the connection was set in concrete just like the defending of our goal ! It's fantastic just 2 see you and hear your craic and god bless king Charlie Hurley the mountain of a man who enhanced the rocker roar that made lads like me and older feel like we were indestructible as a football team 💪✊️✌️thanx a million .
I was at the match at Roker Park against Swansea, when John Charles came back from Italy. Everyone wanted to see him, if my memory serves me correctly, we put two men on him throughout the match Hurley & McNab. The only problem was no one picked up Ivor Allchurch who went on to score a hat trick.
There's only one king charles! Roy keanes Sunderland vs mick mcarthys wolves, i met a Sunderland fan who mentioned this man as greatest! Born in cork and needs to be acknowledge!
