Watch Charlie O'Neal, stained glass artist, describe and demonstrate the copper foil method of making stained glass lamps, using Odyssey molds from Louis Comfort Tiffany designs. A quick How to make stained glass lamps introduction.
I’m so glad I found this! Most of the videos I’ve found don’t seem to do it for me. I like how mellow this guy is and he takes his time explaining things slowly easy for a beginner like myself to understand without having to slow the video down or skipping back over and over trying to catch up on what I missed. Not so rushed, laid back, perfect for me. First time hearing about this tacky wax covering the base you stick ur pieces on, I like that. Good info here, very satisfying hobby my house would be filled with these beauties too. Great job, keep ‘em coming and thanks for making this video I enjoyed it!
Сними лапшу с ушей. Стекло и основа лампы не могут стоить дороже, чем готовая лампа. Конечно купят, ты цены на них видел? Ему просто жалко их продавать.
Very inspiring video, I wish you could make a series of videos showing the process step by step , things like how you made a single pattern and then multipled it to cover the mold, how do you put that sticky wax, what is it made of, how do you apply it on, all of these are what someone like me needs to actually get going , right now it's all a big puzzle to me but I will find out ,there's no going back ,you have inspired me and thank you for it.
Charlie, I would love to see a video showing how to solder on the ring and the rim. Also how to apply copper plating solution and patina. Beautiful work. Nice video.
I started stain glass about 5 years ago as a hobby totally get what you are saying with not selling . People just don't get the time it take you .we can't compete with Walmart or machine made . Love your work I haven't tried lamps but want to .
Thank you for sharing this with all of us! Mr. O’Neal creates beautiful work. He’s right about the option to buy his work versus a lamp at Walmart. I’d prefer his lamp because it’s real glass, not plastic. But, I would think that people would just get what is cheaper. Where is Mr. O’Neal located? Atlanta? Baton Rouge? Mobile? Thanks, again! God Bless!!!
Its a shame, I see a lot of these lamps in antique shops and some are under $100! To think of all the timed and patience it took to make these lamps they should be worth a fortune! Great work indeed!
Charlie's work is beautiful. He made a custom design that is hanging in the window above my front door. Really gorgeous piece, when we moved out of the house I wanted to take it with me, but decided against it because the piece just added so much to the room. If you ever want to have a custom stained glass piece made for your home, this is the guy to do it!
Charlie O'Neal, what a great video, so impressed, your wok is impeccable, the only question i have, is were are you finding all the bases to complete all the lamps you make and still managing true authenticity to a tiffany style finished product?
Beautiful work. My husband and I are just getting back in to stained glass. I really want to do a lamp and I agree with you on the cost. $150 for the form and pattern. Yikes! A question for you, you may not know the answer. We have a bunch of old lead. Do you think it’s usable or should we just get fresh?
Thank you so much for this video.. what is the mold made out of and also is it easy to remove the finalized soldered glass from the mold? Or how does that work.. thanks!
I have tried to make a lamp shade and have finished one. It looks nothing as elaborate as yours. If you ever want to get rid of one I’m your person. I love them and appreciate the beautiful work you do
Just beautiful where do you get the molds and the stand I need the mold for the dragonfly as mine broke and I would to make it I am a stain glass maker haven’t done anything in over 20 yrs as I make jewelry
I would also like to see a video of how you add the hardware such as ring and rim. I am at that point and have been researching and it seems I have to torch the ring to add make the brass hot enough to receive the solder. Is this how you do it? Also do you add the ring while it is on the mold or after you have removed it from the mold?
I do Odyssey lamps. I have noticed that the mylar patterns and the mold patterns can be very different. Most of the time I just have to add one piece at a time to the mold and solder.
You should do one with koi fish (golden-orange) against a blue background and with green under water plants, as it were. I've seen one and it is magnificent!
I bet your Waterlily turned out beautiful! I have seen the dozens of lampshades Charlie has made, soooo inspiring!!! And he taught me more in 6 days then I have self taught myself in 20years!!!
I am almost certain that most American's would never compare something from Walmart with handmade artwork like your stuff. Hand made always goes for a much higher premium in cities with a higher education level as they tend have more money. Which allows them the resources to learn about and appreciate the arts. I would try to get them into Austin, TX, NYC, Boston, SF, or other influential cities. I live in Boston, but certainly couldn't afford to buy most hand made items. However, from experience I know people here would gladly drop a few thousand dollars for a hand made pieces. Which yours are more than worth that.
Folks like me would be interested in purchasing works of art from you. Walmart has nothing that come close to what you produce. There is no comparison, period.
Beautiful work, I did stained glass for about 10 yrs , long time ago ( 20 YRS OR SO ) I KEPT ALL MY TOOLS , after watching you work I'm thinking of taking it up again , great past time , have a huge roll of 60/40 , would it still be good ?
Charley, where can I find the bases for the lamps , and the molds for the shades?? I would appreciate it if you could relay that info, cause I’ve looked and can’t find! Thank you in advance!
Where xan the moulds be found? I have a 80lb floor lamp that is dragonfly design & it needs a shade and cap. ( I enjoy being creative) I will need to try a roughly 25".
This vid was posted so long ago so not sure if Ill get a reply. Does anyone know where Charlie got those lamp molds? I’ve seen elsewhere someone trying to make them but he never disclosed what material was used and their shape didnt come out perfect. Hence the shape of the lamps were off. Thanks in advance!
Do you do repairs? I had just purchased a Tiffany style lamp at an estate sale and I had the lamp shade sitting on the seat and my 10 year old son accident put his hand through the lamp shade and took out a couple of the panes. My lamp shade is square and not circular.
Beautiful, you are so calming. I have made the dragonfly lampshade you show, it turned out that the wings stuck out too much and it turned out awful. Any suggestions
Oh please! If he didn't want to sell, he could just say so. And yes, the shade and base DO cost more than what you can buy at Walmart, as he said in this video. Once you buy the base, glass, solder foil, spider, patina, wax and countless hours upon hours it takes to make one of these, it will cost substantially more than most are willing to pay. They'd rather ask for this lamp and want to pay Temu prices. You get what you pay for. Go ahead and buy one and see for yourself.
