he is using a steel guitar and a metal slider, both used in (delta) blues and some folk /country songs :) search it up and you`ll find tons of artists

Look up recordings by Alan Lomax. He went around the US in the 30s-40s and then later in the 60s, recording folk and delta/country blues songs played by everyday people, some that would eventually become famous due to the recordings. This song definitely sounds like a lot of those recordings.
